This study concerns the performance of condensation heat transfer in plain and grooved thermosyphons. Distilled water, methanol, ethanol have been used as the working fluids. In the present work, a copper tube of the length of 1200mm and 14.28mm of inside diameter is used as the container of the thermosyphon. Each of the evaporator and the condenser section has a length of 550mm, while the remaining part of the thermosyphon tube is adiabatic section. A study was carried out with the characteristics of heat transfer of the thermosyphon 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 helical grooves in which boiling and condensation occur. The liquid filling as the ratio of working fluid volume to total volume of thermosyphon, the kinds of working fluid, the inclination angle, grooves and operating temperature have been used as the experimental parameters. The experimental results show that the number of grooves, the amount of the working fluid, the kind of working fluid, angle of inclination angle are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphon. The maximum heat transfer was obtained when the liquid fill was about 20 to 25 % of the thermosyphon volume. The relatively high rates of heat transfer have been achieved in the thermosyphon with grooves. The helical grooved thermosyphon having 70 to 80 grooves in water, 60 to 70 grooves in methanol and 70 to 80 grooves in ethanol shows the best heat transfer coefficient in both condensation.

The evaluation of the elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{1C}$ was performed on the center of weld metal(CWM), the heat affected zone (HAZ) and the base metal (BM) of API 5LB steel pipes welded by the high frequency electric resistance welding. The $J_{1C}$ was evaluated by the JSME R-Curve and JSME SZW methods using the smooth and side-grooved specimens. The results are as follows; (1) The $J_{1C}$ values by the SZW method are overestimated as compared with those by the R-curve method, because the micro-crack is formed as SZW increase with the deformation at SZ after initiation of the ductile crack. (2) The everage of $J_{1C}$ values by the the R-curve and the SZW methods in side-grooved specimens tended to decrease in comparison with smooth specimens 9.42% at CWM, 4.2% at HAZ, 23.2% at BM, respectively. (3) The boundary of the fatigue pre-crack, stretched zone, and dimple regions appeared more clearly in side-grooved specimens, for the slight change of SZW in the direction of the plate thickness, as compared with smooth specimens.
This paper presents the fabrication method of a micro-riblet film (MRF) using MEMS technology and the experimental results of the drag reduction of an airfoil with MRFs. Riblets having grooved surface in the streamwise direction has been proven as an effective passive control technique of the drag reduction. A V-grooved pattern on (100) silicon wafer is etched with anisotropic bulk micromachining. The MRF is completed by replicating the V-grooved pattern with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Experiments were performed by measuring a velocity field behind the trailing edge of a NACA 0012 airfoil with and without MRFs in a closed-type subsonic wind tunnel using particle image velocimetry (PlV) technique. The MRF provides about 3.8 % drag reduction compared to the drag on a smooth airfoil when the freestream velocity of wind tunnel is 3.3 m/s.
The objective of this study is to develop a local failure criterion for a wall thinning defect of piping components. For this purpose, a series of tensile tests was performed using several types of simulated specimens with different stress states, including smooth round bar, notched round bar (five different notch radii), and grooved plate (three different groove radii). In addition, finite element (FE) simulations were performed on the simulated specimen tests and the results were compared with the test results. From the comparisons, the equivalent stress and strain corresponding to maximum load and final failure of notched specimens were proposed as failure criteria under tensile load. The criteria were verified by employing them to the estimation of failure of grooved plate specimens that simulate the wall thinning defect. It showed that the proposed criteria accurately estimate the maximum load and final failure of grooved plate specimen tests.
This study is aimed to analyze the effects of heat pipe shape on the heat transfer in solar collector with a axial grooved heat pipe. In the design of a heat pipe. two of the most important criteria to be met are the operating temperature range and the maximum heat transport capacity, When the operating temperature range is known and the working fluid has been selected, the maximum heat transport capacity depends strongly on capillary pressure and liquid flow. The heat transport capacity of the heat pipe will depend on the geometry of the heat pipe, the wick structure. the vapor channel shape. groove number. cooling temperature. condenser length and pipe diameter. So various shapes are used for mathematical models of two-phase flow in grooved heat pipe. From the results. the adequate groove shape and scale are presented by considering the heat transport and capillary limitation.
An experimental study on the condensation heat transfer coefficients of R-22, R-290 and R-600a inside horizontal tube was performed. Heat transfer measurements were performed for smooth tube with inside diameter of 10.07 mm and outside diameter of 12.07 mm and inner grooved tube having 75 fins whose height is 0.25 mm. This study was performed for condensation temperatures were from 308 K to 323 K, and mass velocity of $51 kg/m^2s - 250kg/m^2s$. The test results showed that the local condensation heat transfer coefficients increased as the mass flux increased, and also the effect of mass flow rate on heat transfer coefficients of R-290 was less than R-22. In addition, heat transfer coefficient of R-22 increased to a larger extent than R-290 and R-600a as the mass flow rate increased. Average condensation heat transfer coefficients of natural refrigerants were superior to that of R-22. The present results had a good agreement with Cavallini-Zecchin's correlation for smooth and inner grooved tubes.
In this study, a probabilistic framework of the damage assessment of pipelines subjected to extreme hazard scenario was developed to mitigate the risk and enhance design reliability. Nonlinear 3D finite element models of T-joint systems were developed based on experimental tests with respect to leakage detection of black iron piping systems, and a damage assessment analysis of the vulnerability of their components according to nominal pipe size, coupling type, and wall thickness under seismic wave propagations was performed. The analysis results showed the 2-inch schedule 40 threaded T-joint system to be more fragile than the others with respect to the nominal pipe sizes. As for the coupling types, the data indicated that the probability of failure of the threaded T-joint coupling was significantly higher than that of the grooved type. Finally, the seismic capacity of the schedule 40 wall thickness was weaker than that of schedule 10 in the 4-inch grooved coupling, due to the difference in the prohibition of energy dissipation. Therefore, this assessment can contribute to the damage detection and financial losses due to failure of the joint piping system in a liquid pipeline, prior to the decision-making.
In this paper, a theoretical analysis is carried out to study the effect of viscosity variation with pressure in multiply grooved moving hydraulic spool valves. Analytical expressions for pressure distribution in the clearance and leakage flowrate are obtained solving one-dimensional Reynolds. For constant viscosity, an analytical expression for lateral force is also presented. The results showed that variation of viscosity with pressure affect highly on pressure distribution, leakage flowrate and lateral forces in hydraulic spool valves. Therefore additional intensive studies, including numerical analysis for two-dimensional Reynolds, should be required to investigate detailed lubrication characteristics of spool valves for high pressure.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of micro holes, pattern structure and elastic modulus of pads on the polishing behavior such as the removal rate and WIWNU (within wafer non-uniformity) during CMP. The regular holes on the pad act as the superior abrasive particle's reservoir and regular distributor at the bulk pad, respectively. The superior CMP performance was observed at the laser processed bulk pad with holes. Also, th ε groove pattern shape was very important for the effective polishing. Wave grooved pad showed higher removal rates than K-grooved pad. The removal rate was linearly increased as the top pad's elastic modulus increased.
