Thermal Model of High-Speed Spindle Units

  • For the purpose to facilitate development of high-speed spindle units (SUs) running on rolling bearings, we have developed a beam element model, algorithms, and software for computer analysis of thermal characteristics of SUs. The thermal model incorporates a model of heat generation in rolling bearings, a model of heat transfer from bearings, and models for estimation of temperature and temperature deformations of SU elements. We have carried out experimental test and made quantitative evaluation of the effect of operation conditions on friction and thermal characteristics of the SUs of grinding and turning machines of typical structures. It is found out that the operation conditions make stronger effect on SU temperatures when rpm increases. A comparison between the results of analysis and experiment proves their good mutual correspondence and allows us to recommend application of the models and software developed for design and research of high-speed SUs running on rolling bearings.

  • Recently a high speed spindle system for machine tools has attracted considerable attention to reduce the machining time, to improve the machining accuracy, to perform the machining of light metals and hard materials and to unite the cutting and grinding processes. In this study, a high speed spindle system is developed by applying the oil-air lubrication method, angular contact ball bearings, injection nozzles with dual orifices and so on. And a lubrication experiment for evaluating the performance of the spindle system is carried out. Especially, in order to establish the lubrication conditions related to the development of a high speed spindle system, the effects of oil supply rate, rotational spindle speed and so on are studied and discussed on the bearing temperature rise, bearing temperature distribution and frictional torque. And the effect of spindle system structure on the bearing temperature distribution is investigated.

Influence of the material for preformed moulds on the polymerization temperature of resin materials for temporary FPDs

  • PURPOSE. Temperature increase of $5.5^{\circ}C$ can cause damage or necrosis of the pulp. Increasing temperature can be caused not only by mechanical factors, e.g. grinding, but also by exothermic polymerization reactions of resin materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate influences of the form material on the intrapulpal temperature during the polymerization of different self-curing resin materials for temporary restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 30 provisonal bridges were made of 5 resin materials: Prevision Temp (Pre), Protemp 4 (Pro), Luxatemp Star (Lux), Structure 3 (Str) and an experimental material (Exp). Moulds made of alginate (A) and of silicone (S) and vacuum formed moulds (V) were used to build 10 bridges each on a special experimental setup. The intrapulpal temperatures of three abutment teeth (a canine, a premolar, and a molar,) were measured during the polymerization every second under isothermal conditions. Comparisons of the maximum temperature ($T_{Max}$) and the time until the maximum temperature ($t_{TMax}$) were performed using ANOVA and Tukey Test. RESULTS. Using alginate as the mould material resulted in a cooling effect for every resin material. Using the vacuum formed mould, $T_{Max}$ increased significantly compared to alginate (P<.001) and silicone (P<.001). In groups Lux, Pro, and Pre, $t_{TMax}$ increased when the vacuum formed moulds were used. In groups Exp and Str, there was no influence of the mould material on $t_{TMax}$. CONCLUSION. All of the mould materials are suitable for clinical use if the intraoral application time does not exceed the manufacturer's instructions for the resin materials.

고온선박엔진용 MoSi$_2$금속간화합물의 경도와 방전가공특성 (Hardness and EDM Processing of MoSi$_2$Intermetallics for High Temperature Ship Engine)

  • This paper describes the machining characteristics of the MoSi$_2$--based composites through the process of electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes. In addition to hardness characteristics, microstructures of Nb/MoSi$_2$laminate composites were evaluated from the variation of fabricating conditions, such as preparation temperature, applied pressure, and pressure holding time. MoSi$_2$-based composites have been developed in new materials for jet engines of supersonic-speed airplanes and gas turbines for high-temperature generators. These high performance engines may require new hard materials with high strength and high temperature-resistance. Also, with the exception of grinding, traditional machining methods are not applicable to these new materials. Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a thermal process that utilizes a spark discharge to melt a conductive material. The tool electrode is almost -unloaded, because there is n direct contact between the tool electrode and the work piece. By combining a non-conducting ceramic with more conducting ceramic, it was possible to raise the electrical conductivity. From experimental results, it was found that the lamination from Nb sheet and MoSi$_2$ powder was an excellent strategy to improve hardness characteristics of monolithic MoSi$_2$. However, interfacial reaction products, like (Nb, Mo)SiO$_2$and Nb$_2$Si$_3$formed at the interface of Nb/MoSi$_2$, and increased with fabricating temperature. MoSi$_2$composites, with which a hole drilling was not possible through the conventional machining process, enhanced the capacity of ED-drilling by adding MbSi$_2$, relative to that of SiC or ZrO$_2$reinforcements.

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of the post weld treatments on the fatigue life of T-type welded structure made by a SM50A steel material, generally used for excavators, because changes in the geometry, material and surface properties of welded regions affect the fatigue life of welded structures. T-type test specimens were prepared by the CO2 welding of rolled steel plates (SM50A steel) with a thickness of 10 mm at a welding speed of 30 cm/min and these Ttype welded specimens were further treated by UIT (Ultrasonic Impact Treatment) and/or toegrinding post welding treatment methods. In order to investigate improvements on the fatigue life of the samples. 3-point bending fatigue tests were conducted with a stress ratio of R=0.1 under a cyclic loading environment at a frequency of 5 Hz, via a hydraulic fatigue testing machine (${\pm}100\;kN$, MTS 809). The tests were performed at room temperature. The fatigue life of UIT specimens was approximately 25 times longer than that of as-welded specimens at a stress amplitude of 281 MPa, while toe-grinding specimens exhibited 4.15 times longer fatigue life. The current results could provide important guidelines to determine the proper post weld treatment methodologies of T-type welded parts for excavators with a satisfactory fatigue life although under severe operating conditions.

중석 광미를 사용한 시멘트 모르타르의 입도 및 수열합성온도별 물리적 특성 (Properties of Cement Mortar as Particle Size and Hydrothermal Synthesis Temperature Using Scheelite Tailing)

  • 본 연구에서는 국내에 적절한 환경처리 없이 방치되어 있는 중석광미를 활용하여, 중석 광미 입도별 시멘트 모르타르 제조 후 수열합성온도별 물리적 특성을 확인하였다. 시멘트 모르타르 혼합 시 물-시멘트비는 75 %로, 모래-시멘트비는 400 %로 고정하였으며, 광미는 모래(모래 중량 대비 0 ~ 50 % )를 치환하여 사용하였다. 저비소 및 고비소 광미의 입경은 9.3 ~ 53.0 ㎛로 제어하였고 수열합성온도는 승온 속도 2 ℃로 고정하여 60 ~ 180 ℃에서 6시간 동안 유지하였다. 수열합성 온도가 증가에 따라 압축강도는 상승하였으며, 60분 분쇄 저비소 및 고비소 광미를 30 % 혼합 시 압축강도는 각각 55.2 MPa 및 54.5 MPa로, 비교시편 보다 300 % 이상 향상되는 결과를 도출하였다.

반응 조건에 따른 규산마그네슘의 입도 변화 및 폴리올 정제 능력평가 (Change of Particle Size of Magnesium Silicate According to Reaction Conditions and Evaluation of Its Polyol Purification Ability)

  • 염기성 폴리올 및 식용유 정제에 사용하는 합성 규산마그네슘의 효율성은 정제능력과 여과속도를 통해 평가되며, 규산마그네슘의 입도 및 표면적에 따라 영향을 받는다. 본 연구에서는 합성변수인 반응온도, 주입속도, 주입순서(Si, Mg), Mg/Si의 반응몰비가 규산마그네슘의 입도에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 합성된 규산마그네슘은 합성공정, 분쇄공정, 정제공정으로 비교 분석되었다. 합성공정에서 반응 온도와 주입 속도는 규산마그네슘의 평균입도 변화에 영향을 주지않는 반면, Mg/Si의 반응몰비와 주입 순서는 평균입도 변화에 주된 요인으로 작용하였다. 합성 후 규산마그네슘의 평균입도는 반응몰비가 0.125에서 0.500로 증가할 때 Mg 주입 시 약 54.4 ㎛에서 63.1 ㎛로 약 8.7 ㎛ 증가하였고, Si 주입 시 47.3 ㎛에서 52.1 ㎛로 약 4.8 ㎛ 증가하였다. 주입 순서 별 평균입도를 비교해보면 Mg 주입 시 59.1 ㎛, Si 주입 시 48.4 ㎛로 약 10.7 ㎛의 평균입도 차이를 보였으며 Mg을 주입하는 조건에서 약 2배 빠른 수세여과속도가 관찰되었다. 즉, 입도가 증가함에 따라 여과 시간이 단축되고 수세여과속도 증가로 생산성 향상에 기여할 수 있었다. 여과 후 분리된 cake형태의 규산마그네슘은 건조과정을 통해 단단한 고형체가 되고 분쇄공정을 통해 분말형태의 흡착제로 사용된다. 건조된 규산마그네슘의 물리적 강도가 감소함에 따라 분말의 평균입도가 감소하고, 이 강도는 반응몰비에 영향을 받는 것을 확인하였다. Mg주입 시 Mg/Si의 반응몰비가 증가함에 따라 규산마그네슘의 물리적 강도가 감소하여 분쇄 후 평균입도가 합성 후 평균입도에 비해 약 40% 감소하는 것을 관찰하였다. 이러한 강도감소는 평균입도 감소와 분쇄 후 미분량의 증가로 정제능력의 향상을 가져왔지만 정제여과속도 감소를 가져왔다. Mg 주입 시 반응몰비가 0.125에서 0.5로 증가할 동안 정제능력은 약 1.3 배가 증가하였으나 정제여과속도는 약 1.5 배가 감소하였다. 따라서 규산마그네슘의 생산성 향상을 위해서는 Mg/Si의 반응몰비를 증가시켜야 하지만, 폴리올의 정제여과속도를 증가시키기 위해선 반응몰비를 감소시켜야 한다. 규산마그네슘의 합성변수 중 주입순서와 Mg/Si의 반응몰비는 합성 후 평균입도와 분쇄 후 평균입도 및 미분량 변화에 영향을 주는 주요인자로 생산성 및 정제능력을 결정짓는 중요한 합성변수이다.

와이어 컷 방전가공 시 프레스금형 수명 향상에 대한 고찰 (A Study for the Improvement of the Life Cycle of Press Die using Wire Cut Discharge Machining)

  • 프레스금형 제작 시 사용목적에 맞는 적합한 소재선택과 빠른 가공방법에 대한 연구는 금형제작시간을 줄이고 금형원가를 절감하는데 절대적으로 필요한 연구분야이다. 특히 장수명 프레스금형을 개발하기 위해선 열에 대한 고찰이 반드시 이루어져야 한다. 일반적으로 프레스금형의 주요부품 소재로는 Cr, W계 저합금 공구강, 고탄소 고크롬강, 고속도강 등 냉간 금형용 합금공구강이 많이 쓰이고 있다. 프레스금형부품을 가공하는 데는 주로 공작기계와 와이어 컷 방전가공을 사용하고 있다. 가공공정에 따라 금형부품의 가공시간 및 수명이 많은 차이가 난다. 밀링가공과 연삭가공으로 제작된 부품의 경우 제작시간과 비용은 많이 드는데 비해 금형의 수명이 길고 밀링가공과 와이어 컷 방전가공을 사용하면 제작시간과 비용은 절감되는 반면 금형수명은 줄어드는 현상이 나타난다. 따라서 본 연구에선 가공시간과 비용이 절감되는 가공방법으로 열처리를 사용하여 금형의 사용수명을 향상시키는 방법에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 밀링가공-연삭가공, 밀링가공-와이어 컷 방전가공, 밀링가공-와이어 컷-고온템퍼링, 3가지 가공방법으로 시편을 제작하여 가공표면과 중심부를 SEM, EDS분석 및 표면조도분석으로 문제점을 고찰하였고 밀링가공-와이어 컷 방전가공-고온템퍼링의 가공방법으로 밀링가공-연삭가공과 동일한 금형의 수명을 만드는 방법을 도출하였다.

Effects of The Torrefaction Process on The Fuel Characteristics Larix kaempferi C

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the fuel characteristics of thermally treated wood chips of the Larix kaempferi C. As torrefaction temperature was increased ($200^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$), the carbon content, calorific value, and mass loss of torrefied wood chips increased significantly. The torrefied wood chips were shown to have hydrophobic properties even when only treated by mild torrefaction. The energy required to grind torrefied wood chips was reduced by the torrefaction process. Different sizes of wood chips were used in this study; however, this produced almost no difference in the fuel characteristics of processed Larix kaempferi C, except in the distribution of ground wood particles. Similar results were observed when the wood chips were torrefied for different lengths of time (15 min to 60 min) at a constant temperature. Torrefaction was shown to have positive effects on the fuel characteristics of Larix kaempferi C, including improved energy density, storage, and grindability.

공작기계용 고속주축계의 공기냉각특성에 관한 연구 (Air Cooling Characteristics of a High Speed Spindle System for Machine Tools)

In this study, a high speed spindle system is developed by applying the oil-air lubrication method, angular contact ball bearings, injection nozzles with dual orifices, cooling jacket and so on. And an air cooling experiment for evaluating the performance of the spindle system is carried out. Especially, in ofder to establish the air cooling conditions related to the development of a high speed spindle system, the effects of cooling air pressure, oil supply rate, air supply rate and rotational spindle speed are studied and discussed on the bearing temperature rise and frictional torque. Also the effects of cooling air pressure, rotational spindle speed and spindle system structure is investigated on the bearing temperature distribution. The experiment on the test model reveals the usefulness of the air cooling method.
