A developed code is applied to simulate relative motion of floating bodies in a side-by-side arrangement, including effects of a fender and a hawser. The developed code is based on the flux-difference splitting scheme for immiscible incompressible fluids and the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method. To validate the developed code for free surface flows around deforming boundaries, the water wave generation is simulated, which is caused by bed movement. The computed wave profile and time histories of wave elevation are compared with other experimental and computational results. The effects of a fender and a hawser are modeled by asymmetric force acting on the floating bodies according to a relative displacement with the bounds, in which the fender and the hawser exert no force on the bodies. It has been observed that the floating body can be accelerated by a gap flow due to a phase difference caused by the free surface. Grid independency is established for the computed time history of the body velocity, based on three different size grids.
One most feasible way to measure the concentration field in the micro-channel is using micro-LIF(Laser Induced Fluorescence) method. However, an accurate concentration field at a given cross plane in a micro-channel has not been successfully achieved so far due to various limitations in the light illumination and fluorescence signal detection. The present study demonstrates a novel method to provide an ultra thin laser sheet beam having five(5) microns thickness by use of a micro focus laser line generator. The laser sheet beam illuminates an exact plane of concentration measurement field to increase the signal to noise ratio and considerably reduce the depth uncertainty. Nile Blue A was used as fluorescent dye for the present LIF measurement. The enhancement of the fluorescent intensity signals was performed by a solvent mixture of water $(95\%)$ and ethanol (EtOH)/methanol (MeOH) $(5\%)$ mixture. To reduce the rms errors resulted from the CCD electronic noise and other sources, an expansion of grid size was attempted from $1\times1$ to 3(3 or 5(5 pixel data windows and the pertinent signal-to-noise level has been noticeably increased accordingly.
The most soil anchor works have been concerned with the uplift problem on embedded in non-reinforced soils under pullout test. Symmetrical anchor plates are a foundation system that can be resisting tensile load with the support of around soil in which symmetrical anchor plate is embedded. Engineers and authors proved that the uplift response can be improved by grouping the symmetrical anchor plates, increasing the unit weight, embedment ratio and the size of symmetrical anchor plates. Innovation of geosynthetics in the field of geotechnical engineering as reinforcement materials found to be possible solution in symmetrical anchor plate responses. Unfortunately the importance of reinforcement in submergence has received very little attention by researchers. In this paper, provision of tensile reinforcement under embedded conditions has been studied through uplift experiments on symmetrical anchor plates by few researchers. From the test results it has been showed that the provision of geogrid reinforcement system enhances the uplift response substantially under uplift test although other results are such as increase the ultimate uplift response of symmetrical anchor plate embedded using geosynthetic and Grid Fixed Reinforced (GFR) and symmetrical anchor plate improvement is very dependent on geosynthetic layer length and increases significantly until the amount of beyond that further increase in the layer length does not show a significant contribution in the anchor response.
The course stability performance for tankers is evaluated by computational fluid dynamics. In the present work, a Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code is applied to a maneuvering problem covering the pure drift and yaw motions. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the hydrodynamic force in the bare hull (AFRAMAX) in pure drift and yaw motion and to provide information about the trends in the forces and moments when the rudder angles are varied. The flow simulation is performed by FLUENT. The CFD code is examined to find the optimistic computational condition such as size of grid, turbulence model and initial condition. The hydrodynamic derivatives in drift and pure yaw motion are estimated by the numerical simulation, and then the stability levers are calculated. It is confirmed that the computations show the superiority and inferiority of course stability performance according to the hull forms. Finally, the CFD code is applied to the estimation of the rudder forces when the rudder angles are varied. The propeller effect expressed by the body force distribution is also included.
Shape recognition of solder ball bumps in a BGA (Ball Grid Array) is an important issue in flip chip bonding technology. In particular, the semiconductor industry has required faster and more accurate inspection of micron-size solder bumps in flip chip bonding as the density of balls has increased dramatically. The difficulty of this issue comes from specular reflection on the metal ball. Shape recognition of a metal ball is a very realproblem for computer vision systems. Specular reflection of the metal ball appears, disappears, or changes its image abruptly due to tiny movementson behalf of the viewer. This paper presents a practical shape recognition method for three dimensional (3-D) inspection of a BGA using a 5-step ring illumination device. When the ring light illuminates the balls, distinctive specularity images of the balls, which are referred to as "iso-slope contours" in this paper, are shown. By using a mathematical reflectance model, we can drive the 3-D shape information of the ball in aquantitative manner. The experimental results show the usefulness of the method for industrial application in terms of time and accuracy.
In some portions of nuclear piping systems, stratification phenomena may occur due to the density difference between hot and cold stream. When the temperature difference is large, the stratified flow under diverse operating conditions can produce high thermal stress, which leads to unanticipated piping integrity issues. The objectives of this research are to examine controvertible numerical factors such as model size, grid resolution, turbulent parameters, governing equation, inflow direction and pipe wall. Parametric three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics analyses were carried out to quantify effects of these parameters on the accuracy of temperature profiles in a typical nuclear piping with complex geometries. Then, as a key finding, it was recommended to use optimized mesh of real piping with the conjugated heat transfer condition for accurate thermal stratification analyses.

In this study, the impact of roof slope on the flow characteristics over low-sloped gable roofs was investigated using steady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations based on a k-ω SST turbulence model. A measurement database of the flow field over a scaled model of 15° was created using particle image velocimetry (PIV). Sensitivity analyses for the grid resolutions and turbulence models were performed. Among the three common Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) models, the k-ω SST model exhibited a better performance, followed by the RNG model and then the realizable k-ε model. Next, the flow properties over the differently sloped (0° to 25°) building models were determined. It was found that the effect of roof slope on the flow characteristics was identified by changing the position and size of the separation bubbles, 15° was found to be approximately the sensitive slope at which the distribution of the separation bubbles changed significantly. Additionally, it is suggested additional attention focused on the distributions of the negative pressure on the windward surfaces (especially 5° and 10° roofs) and the possible snow redistribution on the leeward surfaces.
Lagrangian particle dispersion model(LPDM) is an effective tool to calculate the dispersion from a point source since it dose not induce numerical diffusion errors in solving the pollutant dispersion equation. Fictitious particles are released to the atmosphere from the emission source and they are then transported by the mean velocity and diffused by the turbulent eddy motion in the LPDM. The concentration distribution from the dispersed particles in the calculation domain are finally estimated by applying a particle count method or a Gaussian kernel method. The two methods for calculating concentration profiles were compared each other and tested against the analytic solution and the tracer experiment to find the strength and weakness of each method and to choose computationally time saving method for the LPDM. The calculated concentrations from the particle count method was heavily dependent on the number of the particles released at the emission source. It requires lots fo particle emission to reach the converged concentration field. And resulting concentrations were also dependent on the size of numerical grid. The concentration field by the Gaussian kernel method, however, converged with a low particle emission rate at the source and was in good agreement with the analytic solution and the tracer experiment. The results showed that Gaussian kernel method was more effective method to calculate the concentrations in the LPDM.
This paper describes the design and development of a novel semiconductor-based solid-state switch for damped oscillating voltage test system. The proposed switch is configured as two identical series-connected switch stacks, each of which comprising 10 series-connected IGBT function units. Each unit consists of one IGBT, a gate driver, and an auxiliary voltage sharing circuit. A single switch stack can block 20 kV-rated high voltage, and two stacks in series are proven applicable to 30 kV-rated high voltage. The turn-on speed of the switch is approximately 250 ns. A flyback topology-based power supply system with a front-end power factor correction is built for the drive circuit by loosely inductively coupling each unit with a ferrite core to the primary side of a power generator to obtain the advantages of galvanic isolation and compact size. After the simulation, measurement, and estimation of the parasitic effect on the gate driver, a prototype is assembled and tested under different operating regimes. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the developed prototype.
This paper proposes an improved low frequency Selective Harmonic Mitigation-PWM (SHM-PWM) technique. The proposed method mitigates the low order harmonics of the output voltage up to the $50^{th}$ harmonic well and satisfies the grid codes EN 50160 and CIGRE-WG 36-05. Using a modified criterion for the switching angles, the range of the modulation index for non-linear SHM equations is improved, without increasing the switching frequency of the CHB converter. Due to the low switching frequency of the CHB converter, mitigating the harmonics of the converter up to the $50^{th}$ order and finding a wider modulation index range, the size and cost of the passive filters can be significantly reduced with the proposed technique. Therefore, the proposed technique is more efficient than the conventional SHM-PWM. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a 7-level Cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter is utilized for the study. Simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the above claims.
