  • An experiment was conducted to study incidences of heat loss in greenhouse in Gyeongnam province using thermal imaging camera in order to determine ways minimizing greenhouse heat loss. Measurements of this work showed that temperature differences between two experiment zones before and after installation of thermal curtains were about $2.0{\sim}3.0^{\circ}C$ and $1.0{\sim}2.0^{\circ}C$ respectively. There was a high correlation between the temperature data measured using a thermal imaging camera and a temperature sensor. There was no serious difference among areas, but between places on the first and second floor with thermal curtains for heat insulation, there was a relatively larger heat loss on the first floor than the second floor. Then in general the greenhouse types had no particular bearing on this matter, there was a relatively large heat loss in the parts of side wall window, the gaps and the parts folded of horizontal thermal curtains, the gutter parts, and the gaps of thermal curtain in the side wall window and facade back side for heat insulation, aren't completely sealed. It was found that there was a substantial heat loss due to infiltration through cracks on covering material, doors, ventilating openings, roof gables and floors, in particular.

  • This research performed to analyze surplus solar energy, which is generated from a greenhouse during daytime, and to make the basic materials for designing thermal energy storage system for surplus solar energy. For this goal, it analyzed the surplus solar energy coming from two types of greenhouse. The results of this research are as per the below: In the case of 1-2W-type greenhouse, this research gave the same temperature and ventilation condition regardless of regions, but it was judged that the quantity of surplus solar energy could be greatly changed, depending on the energy consumed for the photosynthesis and evapotranspiration of crops in the greenhouse, on the heating temperature during daytime and night, on the existence/non-existence of a curtain and its warming effect, and on the ventilation temperature suitable for the overcoming of high temperature troubles or for the optimum cultivation temperature. In the case of a single-span greenhouse, there was a big difference in energy incoming and outgoing by month, but throughout seasons, 85.0 % of the total energy put into the greenhouse was solar energy and the energy input by heating was just 15.0 % of the total. 26.4 % of the total energy input for the greenhouse was used for photosynthesis and evapotranspiration of crops, and 44.2 % of the remaining 73.6 % went out in the form of radiant heat through the surface of the greenhouse. That is, 25.2 % of the total energy loss was just the surplus solar energy. 67.6 % of the total heating energy was concentrically used for 3 months from December to February next year, but the surplus solar energy during the same period was just 19.4 % of the total annual quantity so it was found that the given condition was more restrictive in directly converting the surplus heat into greenhouse heating. Under the disadvantageous circumstance of 3 months from December to February next year, it was possible to supplement 28 % (December) $\sim$ 85 % (February) of heating energy with surplus solar energy.

  • In recent years, concerns have been growing globally regarding greenhouse gases. Open burning of biomass causes emission of a number of greenhouse and other gases and substances. This paper studied an analysis on the characteristics of four types of biomass using duel type cone calorimeter. Cone calorimeter is widely used for assessing combustibility of materials in Europe. As a result, we evaluated several characteristics of biomass, such as heat released rate, smoke production rate, CO, $CO_2$ production and mass loss rate, and so on. $CO_2$ is currently responsible for over $60\%$ of the enhanced greenhouse effect, and may be the most important contributor to future. $CO_2$ production for biomass in the range of $1.74\~1.99kg/kg$ is similar to previous research conducted by Bhattacharya et al. (2002a).

  • In this study, new development of natural ventilation window was accomplished to control environment of greenhouse with no use of farced ventilation during hot season. The ventilation effect of developed ventilation window was investigated in experimental greenhouse which was designed using side wall panel and folding type panel fur natural ventilation. Folding panel type ventilation window was designed to open upper part of the side wall and top of the roof using two hinges which are located bottom of the side wall and the roof panel to grab one side of each panels and guide the other side along with the guidance rail. Developed ventilation window has top ventilation part with maximum moving distance X=ι (1-cos$\theta$)=848.5 mm and side ventilation part with maximum moving distance Y=ι/2 $\times$sin$\theta$=1,184.4 mm at 45$^{\circ}$ of theoretical opening angle. It took 4.5 minutes to open roof vent fully and temperature at 1.2 and 0.8 m height decreased after 1 minute from starting opening and became equilibrium state maintaining 3-4$^{\circ}C$ difference after 2 minutes from complete opening. Air exchange rate was 15.2~39.3 h$^{-1}$ which was more than 10~15 h$^{-1}$ of continuous type and Venlo type greenhouse. The descent effect of temperature by ventilation windows was two times higher than Venlo type greenhouse.

  • In this study, the performance characteristics of the K-based sorbents (KEP-CO2P2, KEPCO RI, Korea) has been studied in relation with the heat exchanger structure and shape in a mixing zone of the carbonator in the bench-scale dry $CO_2$ capture process. Two types of heat exchangers (different structure and shape) were used in the carbonator as CASE 1 and CASE 2, in which the experiment has been continuously performed under the same operating conditions. During the continuous operation, working temperature of carbonator was 75 to $80^{\circ}C$, that of regenerator was 190 to $200^{\circ}C$, and $CO_2$ inlet concentration of the feed gas was 12 to 14 vol%. Especially, to compare the dynamic sorption capacity of sorbents, the differential pressure of the mixing zone in the carbonator was maintained around 400 to 500 mm $H_2O$. Also, solid samples from the carbonator and the regenerator were collected and weight variation of those samples was evaluated by TGA. The $CO_2$ removal efficiency and the dynamic sorption capacity were 64.3% and 2.40 wt%, respectively for CASE 1 while they were 81.0% and 4.66 wt%, respectively for CASE 2. Also, the dynamic sorption capacity of the sorbent in CASE 1 and CASE 2 was 2.51 wt% and 4.89 wt%, respectively, based on the weight loss of the TGA measurement results. Therefore, It was concluded that there could be a difference in the performance characteristics of the same sorbents according to the structure and type of heat exchanger inserted in the carbonator under the same operating conditions.

  • In this report, we set up a simple device which enabled us to obtain data useful to estimate the relative capacity of thermal energy retention of greenhouse built with various plastic coverings. A box($20cm{\times}20cm{\times}30cm$) framed with flexiglass at the edges and covered with thin plastic films was made, in which were placed a thermostat-controlled nichrom wire heater and a thermal probe made of thermister to monitor temperature changes. A wheaston-bridge type transducer and a chart recorder were used to record the changes of temperature inside the box The data obtained by using the device showed that the relative rate of heat toss through plastic films with identical thickness decreased in the order of PE film>EVA film>PVC film and that IR additives such as fine silica gel improved the insulating power of plastic films. This observations are in well accord with general information, demostrating the feasibility of the device in usefulness for the purpose of screening of various commercial plastic coverings.

  • This study examined the overall feasibility of low carbon green village formed in rural area. The check method is analyzing its environmental and economic feasibility and energy self-reliance. The biomass of the villages was set as 28 ton/day of livestock feces and 2 ton/day of cut fruit tree branches which make up the total of 30 ton/day. The facility consisted of a bio gasfication facility using wet (livestock feces) biomass and combined heat power generator, composting facility and wood boiler using dry (cut fruit tree branches) biomass. When operating the system, 540,540 kWh/yr of electricity and 1,762 Gcal/yr of heat energy was produced. The region's electricity energy and heat energy self-reliance rate will be 100%. The economic feasibility was found as a loss of 140 million won where the facility installation cost is 5.04 billion won, operation cost is 485.09 million won and profit is 337.12 million won. There will be a loss of about 2.2 billion won in 15 years but in the environmental analysis, it was found that crude replacement effect is about 178 million won, greenhouse gas reduction effect is about 92 million won making up the total environmental benefit of 270 million won. This means, there will be a yearly profit of about 130 million won. In terms of its environmental and economic feasibility and energy self-reliance, this project seemed to be a feasible project in overall even if it manages to get help from the government or local government.
