Synthesis of a Cyclic Carhonate, 4-Ethyl-l,3-dioxolan-2-one (고리 카보네이트 화합물인 4-Ethyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one의 새로운 합성)

  • Butylene carbonate(4-ethyl-l,3-dioxolan-2-one), one of the cyclic carbonate was synthesized by the thermal degradation of poly(butylene carbonate). The poly(butylene carbonate) was made from 1,2-Epoxybutane and carbon dioxide which is one of the main green house gas. The prepared cyclic carbonate was identified by GC-Mass. This synthetic method is an alternative way to prepare cyclic carbonates.

  • Various efforts of reducing the green house gas in the whole industrial fields including railway industry have been implemented. Tilting train is the key example because it can run more faster on the existing rail than others due to its composite body. The system has an advantage of light weight but also a task to solve, recycling of composite material. To recycle the CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic), there are two typical methods; chemical and thermal method. In this study, more environmentally friendly recycling method was recommended through the environmental function through comparing both recycling methods.

  • 온실가스 저감에 필요한 기술에는 온실가스 배출량 관리를 비롯하여 배출권 할당, 인증, 거래, 분석, 계획 등의 기술들이 있다. 본 논문은 유통 물류 부문 기업 들이 배출하는 온실가스를 체계적으로 관리 하기 위해 필요한 온실가스 관리 시스템 구현에 관한 연구로서 온실가스 벤토리를 포함한 통합관리 시스템 구현에 대해 설명하고 있다. 구현된 온실가스 관리 시스템은 최신의 웹어플리케이션 개발 방법론에 따라 기능 및 서비스를 SaaS 방식으로 제공할 수 있도록 설계 되었다. 기능별로 서비스 관리와 사용자 관리 그리고 온실가스 인벤토리 기능으로 나누었으며 유통 물류 분야에 적합하도록 데이터 수집에 있어서 편리성을 제공하도록 설계하였다.

  • This paper presents an in-depth review for current status for demand-side management (DSM) investment of energy supplier and an useful prospect on the introduction of Energy Efficiency Resource Standards (EERS). According to the Article 9 of Rational Energy Utilization Act, Energy suppliers-Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) and Korea District Heat Corporation (KDHC) prescribed by Presidential Decree-must establish and implement annual demand-side management investment plan to improve energy efficiency in production, transformation, transportation, storage and usage of corresponding energy and to reduce demand and green house gas emissions. In this paper, we examine the DSM programs of energy suppliers and the results of DSM investment in 2009, then we propose a reasonable solution for the development of DSM investment. Furthermore, in order to compare our situation, the case studies were conducted on EERS issues in England, Italy, France and U.S, such as establishing the energy saving target, selecting the target energy supplier, and penalty and incentive mechanisms. Throughout the case studies, this paper suggests the directions to the DSM investment planning of energy suppliers and the major issues to prepare EERS in Korea.

Study of Hydrogen Combustion with n Gun-type Burner (건타입 버너의 수소 연소에 관한 연구)

  • A gun-type burne. fur a LPG(Liquified Petroleum Gas) boiler was utilized for hydrogen combustion. The study was performed to obtain fundamental data prior to the design of a very low NO$\_$x/, hydrogen-fueled burner. First, numerical simulations were performed to predict mixing characteristics between air and fuel flows, and temperature distributions, etc. Experimental study was then performed to find out flame lengths, temperature distributions, and NO$\_$x/ concentrations. The results showed that a gun-type burner for a LPG boiler can be successfully used for hydrogen combustion without any major retrofitting. The hydrogen flame was very stable and 75 ppm of NO$\_$x/ in average was observed for the conditions considered in this study. Hydrogen combustion could be therefore a solution to avoid the problem of green-house gas(CO$_2$) if hydrogen becomes cost-effective.

  • $CO_2$ is a well-known green house gas as well as the major source of global warming. Many researchers have studied to reduce $CO_2$ emission in combustion processes. Among the method for reducing $CO_2$ emission, oxygen-enriched combustion has been proposed. Because its adiabatic flame temperature is relatively too high, existing facilities must be changed or the flame temperature in the combustion zone should be reduced. The combustion characteristics, composition in the flame zone, temperature profile and emission gases were investigated experimentally for the various oxygen-enriched ratios(OER) by the addition of $CO_2$, under constant $O_2$ flow rate. Results showed that the reaction zone was quenched and broadened as the addition of $CO_2$ was increased. The emission of NOx in flue gas was decreased as decreasing temperature in reaction zone. It was also shown that the reaction was delayed by the cooling effect. As the addition of $CO_2$ was increased, the composition of CO in the flame zone was increased due to the increase of reaction rate by increasing mixing effect of oxidant/fuel at OER=0%, but the composition of CO was decreased by quenching effect at OER=50% and 100%.

  • This paper analyzes the economic and environmental impacts of domestic policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by focusing on carbon tax, domestic emissions trading and the mixture of these policies. By utilizing a dynamic CGE model, KORTEM, this study shows that the economic cost under carbon tax is projected to be higher than that under emission trading. It is because under carbon tax scheme each emitter in economy must meet its emission target regardless of the abatement cost. On the other hand, emission trading allows emitters to reduce the marginal cost of abatement through trading of emission permits. In designing policy portfolio to address the climate change problem in Korea, therefore, this paper proposes the introduction of domestic emission trading scheme as the main domestic policy Instrument.

  • Global warming has become one of the most important social responsibilities. After Kyoto protocol for greenhouse gas reduction by climatic change convention came into effect, developed countries are presenting various policies to reduce greenhouse gas that is produced in transport field. One of those policies is modal shift that change from road freight to sea, inland waterway and railway transportation that is eco-friendly. Because increase of road freight brings about road congestion and accident, logistics cost, air pollution and green house gases. Railways are superior to all other modes of transport in mass transportability, high speed, timeliness, safety and environmental-friendliness, but the railway industry has been pushed behind in competition. In developed country's government actively promoted relevant legislation, policies, and countermeasures known as modal shift policies to shift freight transport from road to large volume mode such as railway and ship. In this paper, we discuss the current situation in modal shift, compare it with cases in other countries EU and Japan, identify problems in Korea, and propose the following ways to enhance competitiveness of rail freight.

  • Currently, hydrogen has been produced by Steam Reforming or partial oxidation reforming processes mainly from oil, coal, and natural gas and results in the production of $CO_2$. However, these are influenced greatly on the green house effect of the earth. so it is important to find the new way to produce hydrogen utilizing water without producing any environmentally harmful by-products. In our research, we use microwave water plasma and photocatalyst to improve dissociation rate of water. At low pressure plasma, electron have high energy but density is low, so temperature of reactor is low. This may cause of recombination in the generated hydrogen and oxygen from splitting water. If it want to high dissociation rate of water, it is necessary to control of recombination of the hydrogen and oxygen using photocatalyst. We utilize the photocatalytic material($TiO_2$, ZnO) coated plasma reactor to use UV in the plasma. The quantity of hydrogen generated was measured by a Residual Gas Analyzer.
