한국영화에 표현된 회색의 기능과 의미 : 기억과 망각 (Function and Meaning of Color Gray in Korean Films : Memory and Oblivion)

  • The color gray in the cinema expresses the private or public memory and oblivion in the reminiscence scenes. The aesthetic function and meaning of gray that interacts with other elements in cinematic time and space are expanded in various ways. This study was analyzed the cases in which gray was used as the main visual style by limiting the scope to Korean films. Based on the traditional cultural symbolic meaning of gray, I analyzed how it was applied and transformed in films, and interpreted the cultural-social meaning by the interaction between gray and other elements. In film history starting from monochrome, gray has been used as a visual device suitable for realizing cinematic or imaginary reality. Gray is adopted when dreams or recollections are visualized as imaginary reality, and it is used when dreamy imaginations of daydreaming are demonstrated. Gray, which reproduces the dreamlike reality of imagination, is the concrete and realistic way of expression. First, in Korean films, gray is a flashback visual device that recalls the past, and is an intermediary visual form that materializes the imaginary. In films such as Ode to My Father (2014), DongJu (2015), A Resistance(2019) and The Battle : Roar to Victory (2019), the gray of the past is a visual device for cultural memory that builds the homogeneity and identity of the group. In the era of hyper-visibility, gray in black and white images is intended to be clearly remembered by unfamiliarity rather than blurry oblivion by familiarity. Second, in genre films with disaster materials such as Train To Busan (2016) and Ashfall (2019), the grays of rain, fog, clouds, shadows and smoke highlight other elements, and the gray color causes anxiety and fear. In war films such as TaeGukGi: Brotherhood Of War (2003) and The Front Line (2011), gray shows a more intense brutality than the primary color. In sports films such as 4th Place (2015), Take Off (2009) and Forever The Moment (2007), gray expresses uncertainty and immaturity. Third, gray visualizes the historical memory of A Petal (1996), the oblivion in Oh! My Gran (2020) and Poetry (2010), and the reality of daydreaming Gagman (1988) and Dream (1990). At the boundary between imagination and reality, gray is a visual form of dreams, memories and forgetfulness.

오배자에 의한 회색계열 염색에 관한 연구 (A Study on Using Gray Color Dyeing from Gallapple)

  • The study has objective in raising value of the gray color as a meaningful color suiting sentiments of modern people by expressing the gray color in various perspective utilizing natural dyes that is natural at the same time having aesthetic color tones. For example, the main ingredient used for coloring black and gray color is the pyrogallol tannin and the gray tone dye can be acquired by combining the tannin with iron. In order to find the suitable condition for processing tannin, UV-Vis part absorption spectrum of Gallapple pyrogallol tannin, dye ability based on temperature and time, reflection rate based on concentration, color changes based on acid treatment and alkali treatment, changes on surface based on concentration or metal mordant condition, and lightfastness were measured. Maximum absorption wavelength (${\lambda}_{max}$) of Gallapple tannin was at around 273 nm, while strong absorption was also observed at below 350 nm. Dye ability of Gallapple tannin is done more easily on silk rather than cellulose fibers such as cotton, while the optimum condition for dyeing was observed to be at $60^{\circ}C$, for 20 minutes. As a result of acid treatment, the color of dye material consist highly of gray tones and showed red tone after the alkali treatment. While it was observed that as dye concentration and metal mordant concentration increased the color changed at counter-clockwise direction on the Y-scale of Munsell's scale of colors. Lightfastness was more on a normal fading. I hope this study opens up possibilities towards presenting gray color expressed from tannin as color with diversity and aesthetic value. In future, comparative study between dye expressed from catechol tannin dye materials will be helpful.

학교 교실의 용도별 색채분포 및 색채계획에 관한 연구 (A Study on The Color Examination and Color Planning in the Different Type of Classroom)

  • The purpose of this study is examine the color planning in the different type of classroom to establish interior color planning. This study also uses environmental planning and practical use of basic data for color planning to future school facilities. The summary of this study is as followed. The primary school and middle school classrooms as well as the open space classrooms floor color recommended of brown and the primary school wall color is light yellow, middle school wall color is light yellow and brown. The high school classroom color is recommended brown and wall color to light yellow and green system. The recommended floor color of primary school which includes in computer room and language study room, library of the multi-purpose of media room recommended are gray, brown and pink. The recommended wall color in primary school is light gray. The middle school floor color propose gray and light brown and wall recommended color is light brown, gray, ivory with the high school the computer room, language study room and library. The floor color is recommended gray, green and the wall propose blue. Moreover, recognize that importance of color effectiveness in school interior facilities considering with Interior covering material in class room.

웨이블릿 패킷 변환을 이용한 흑백 영상의 칼라화 알고리즘 (Colorization Algorithm Using Wavelet Packet Transform)

  • 색 정보를 흑백 영상에 숨기고 이를 다시 찾아서 흑백 영상을 칼라 영상으로 복원하는 칼라화 알고리즘이 최근 연구되고 있다. 이러한 방법에서는 색 정보를 숨기고 복원할 때 원본 영상의 정보 손실을 최소화하는 것이 중요하다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 흑백 영상에 색 정보를 숨기고 이를 다시 복원할 때, 원본 영상의 정보 손실을 최소화하기 위해 웨이블릿 패킷 변환을 이용한 칼라화 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 그리고 복원된 칼라 영상의 열화된 채도를 보상하기 위한 채도 향상 알고리즘도 함께 제안하였다. 제안한 칼라화 방법은 칼라 영상을 흑백 영상으로 변환하는 과정(color-to-gray)과 변환된 흑백 영상에서 칼라 성분을 추출하여 복원하는 과정(gray-to-color)으로 구성된다. Color-to-gray 과정에서는 입력 RGB 영상을 YCbCr 영상으로 변환한 뒤, Y 영상에 웨이블릿 패킷 변환을 수행하여 각 sub-band의 정보량을 조사한다. 그리고 원본 영상의 정보량이 가장 적은 두 개의 sub-band에 색 정보를 삽입하여, 색 정보 복원 시에 원본 영상의 정보 손실을 최소화 한다. Gray-to-color 과정에서는 프린팅 및 스캐닝에 의해 발생하는 색 채도의 열화를 보상하기 위해 프린터와 스캐너의 특성곡선을 획득하고, 이를 이용하여 변화된 화소값을 보상해줌으로써 복원된 칼라 영상의 색 채도를 향상시킨다. 또한 복원된 영상의 CbCr 범위를 확장하여 열화된 색 채도를 향상시킨다. 실험을 통해 제안된 칼라화 방법은 경계영역의 선명도 및 색 채도를 향상시킴을 확인하였다.

인간심리를 이용한 감성 모델과 영상검색에의 적용 (Emotional Model via Human Psychological Test and Its Application to Image Retrieval)

  • A new emotion-based image retrieval method is proposed in this paper. The research was motivated by Soen's evaluation of human emotion on color patterns. Thirteen pairs of adjective words expressing emotion pairs such as like-dislike, beautiful-ugly, natural-unnatural, dynamic-static, warm-cold, gay-sober, cheerful-dismal, unstablestable, light-dark, strong-weak, gaudy-plain, hard-soft, heavy-light are modeled by 19-dimensional color array and $4{\times}3$ gray matrix in off-line. Once the query is presented in text format, emotion model-based query formulation produces the associated color array and gray matrix. Then, images related to the query are retrieved from the database based on the multiplication of color array and gray matrix, each of which is extracted from query and database image. Experiments over 450 images showed an average retrieval rate of 0.61 for the use of color array alone and an average retrieval rate of 0.47 for the use of gray matrix alone.

신경망을 이용한 칼라 입력장치의 칼라 보정 (Color correction of tile color input device using the Neural Network)

  • 칼라 입출력 장비의 가격이 점차로 저렴해짐에 따라 영상으로부터 물체의 형상뿐만아니라 칼라까지도 인식하여 보다 정밀한 정보를 이용하고자하는 요구가 증대되고 있다. 이를 위해서는 칼라 입출력 시스템의 정확한 칼라 표현 및 재현을 위해 칼라 보정에 관한 연구가 선행되어져야한다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 칼라 입출력장비 중 칼라 스캐너의 칼라 보정에 관하여 연구하였다. 칼라 스캐너의 특성은 gray-balancing과 칼라 변환의 두과정을 나뉜다. 칼라 변환으로부터 gray-balancing을 분리함으로써 칼라 변환을 위해 유도되어진 변환 행렬은 모든 형태의 스캐너에 적용될 수 있어 스캐너 특성의 portability를 가능하게 한다. 또한, gray-balance된 RGB값을 얻기위한 선의 적합을 위해 최소자승법을 이용하였고, 칼라 변환을 위해 gray-balance된 RGB로부터 CIE-XYZ로 비선형적 좌표 변환 문제를 저장공간이 많이 필요하지 않고, 빠른 변환결과를 제공할 수 있는 장점이 있는 신경망 기법을 이용하여 해결 하였다. 삼차원 3자극치 공간에서 신경망 출력은 원하는 출력의 근사치를 제공하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 제안된 칼라 보정 방법은 모듈별로 분해되었기 때문에 스캐너 특성의 portability를 가능하게 하여 모든 형태의 스캐너 보정에 이용될 수 있으리라 기대된다.

Coded Single Input Channel for Color Pattern Recognition in Joint Transform Correlator

  • Recently, we reported a single input channel joint transform correlator for the color pattern recognition which decomposes the input color image into three R, G, and B gray components and adds those components into a single gray image in the input plane. This technique has the merit of a single input channel instead of three input channels. However, we found this technique has some problems with discrimination impossibility in the case of a simple primary color pattern which results in the same gray level through the addition process. Thus, we propose a modified coding technique which selectively recombines the decomposed three R, G, and B gray components instead of the simple adding process. Simulated results show that the modified coding technique can accurately discriminate a variety of kinds of color images.

  • Tone reproduction characteristics of color and gray have a great influence on the picture quality in visual display. In this study, we optimized tone reproduction characteristics of color and gray of CRT monitor by setting brightness to the optimum level, in which offsets for RGB channels can be assumed to zero. The optimum brightness level could be found by measuring a few tones of neutral for the combination of 2 levels of brightness and 2 levels of contrast. As the result, the relationship between normalized DAC count and normalized luminance of primary color or gray has been simply presented by gamma and result in good phosphor constancy.

색상지수 기반의 식물분할을 위한 다층퍼셉트론 신경망 (A Multi-Layer Perceptron for Color Index based Vegetation Segmentation)

  • Vegetation segmentation in a field color image is a process of distinguishing vegetation objects of interests like crops and weeds from a background of soil and/or other residues. The performance of the process is crucial in automatic precision agriculture which includes weed control and crop status monitoring. To facilitate the segmentation, color indices have predominantly been used to transform the color image into its gray-scale image. A thresholding technique like the Otsu method is then applied to distinguish vegetation parts from the background. An obvious demerit of the thresholding based segmentation will be that classification of each pixel into vegetation or background is carried out solely by using the color feature of the pixel itself without taking into account color features of its neighboring pixels. This paper presents a new pixel-based segmentation method which employs a multi-layer perceptron neural network to classify the gray-scale image into vegetation and nonvegetation pixels. The input data of the neural network for each pixel are 2-dimensional gray-level values surrounding the pixel. To generate a gray-scale image from a raw RGB color image, a well-known color index called Excess Green minus Excess Red Index was used. Experimental results using 80 field images of 4 vegetation species demonstrate the superiority of the neural network to existing threshold-based segmentation methods in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and harmonic mean.

LCybCrg 색 공간에서 분류맵을 이용한 바랜 색 보정 (Faded Color Correction using Classification Map in LCybCrg Color Space)

  • 일반적으로 바랜 영상 보정 방법들은 색 바램의 현상은 광원의 효과로서, Gray World Assumption 또는 White Patch Retinex와 같은 광원 추정 알고리즘을 사용한다. 그러나 이러한 방법들은 염료의 특성, 온도, 습도, 광원 등에 따라 다르게 바래는 색에 대한 보정은 부정확함을 나타냈다. 본 논문에서는 LCybCrg 색 공간에서의 분류맵을 이용한 바랜 색 보정 방법을 제안한다. 먼저 입력의 색 바랜 영상은 LCybCrg의 보색 공간의 색도를 기반으로 하여 분류되었다. 그리고 RGB 색 공간에서 Gray World Assumption을 기반으로 하여 바랜 색도를 보정하였다. 또한 CybCrg 값으로부터 계산된 가중치는 각각의 영역에서 발생 할 수 있는 윤곽효과를 줄이기 위해 적용되었다. 그 결과 제안한 방법은 바랜 영상에 대해 이전 방법들 보다 더 나은 보정 성능을 보였다.
