The Durability of Polybutylene Succinate Monofilament for Fishing Net Twines by Outdoor Exposure Test (옥외 노출시험에 의한 PBS 단일섬유 망사의 내구성 변화)

  • Biodegradable polybutylene succinate(PBS) is a kind of environmentally friendly plastics for fisheries, because it can mitigate the ghost fishing problem caused by gill-net and trap fisheries. To evaluate durability of PBS monofilament, each of different diameter 3 types of monofilaments were spun and exposed to 56 month outdoor and then their gravity, modification of surface, breaking strength, and elongation were analysed. The gravity of PBS monofilament was estimated to be approximately 1.24 when spinning ratio from 4.8 to 6.1. PBS monofilaments did not show any crack after 56 month exposed to outdoor and load-elastic elongation curve was showed sigmoid type. Decreasing ratio of elongation was appeared in the thinnest monofilament 0.2mm diameter and breaking strength was in the thickest monofilament 0.4mm diameter. Breaking strength and elongation at break were decreased rapidly after 48 month exposed to outdoor. Breaking strength reduced linearly after 48 month exposure, while no such linear relationship was found in the case of elongation at break. In results, it was investigated that the durability of PBS monofilament nets for gillnet and trap were 24, 50 month when keep to land, respectively.

  • Generally, automobile cooling fan is used to lower the temperature of radiator. The cooling fans are manufactured by plastic injection molding process. The center of gravity of cooling fan is often deviated from the center due to the use of deteriorated materials. As the unbalanced of the cooing fan can generate noise, it is required to measure the degree of deviation of center of gravity in the cooling fan. In this work, automatic fan balancer which can effectively detect the magnitude and position of the unbalanced cooling fan is proposed and several experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

A Study on the Behavior of Spheroid Configuration Bobbin (회전타원체 보빈 형상의 거동에 관한 연구)

  • The initial trajectory of a spheroid configuration bobbin for precision guidance has been investigated by analyzing its aerodynamic load and six-degree-of-freedom motion. The effects of changes in the spheroidal head configuration, flow angle and lateral center-of-gravity offset are numerically studied using the commercial software "FLUENT". A wind tunnel test is also conducted to validate the numerical scheme and to examine effect of the Reynolds number on the flow around the bobbin. It is shown that the size of the separation bubble formed on the surface decreases significantly when the Reynolds number is varied between 110,000 and 140,000. At a zero flow angle, an oblate spheroidal head shows relatively moderate rotation while a prolate spheroidal head shows rapid rotation. The bobbin with a spherical head shape has little effect on the flow direction; however, the oblate bobbin is sensitive to the flow angle. The roll motion of the bobbin is greatly influenced by the lateral center-of-gravity offset and maximum dispersion is observed at half of the radius.

  • In recent years, medium- to large-scale transportation machinery and machine tool manufacturing process lines have shown a trend toward centralization, softening, lightening, and slimming to reduce costs and increase productivity. This has increased the demand for vertical articulated robots. When developing and introducing a heavy weight-handling robot that can be easily applied to existing production lines, it is expected to have a great effect in securing industrial competitiveness by solving industrial issues such as the decreased productivity and increased risk of accidents due to work involving heavy lifting. In this study, we design a 6-axis robot mechanism with a heavy load-handling capacity of 700kg or more for large-sized materials of various types supplied in small quantities.

  • The reinforced concrete flat plate system provides architectural flexibility, clear space, reduced building height, simple formwork, which consequently enhance constructibility. One of the serious problem in the flat plate system is brittle punching shear failure due to transfer of shear force and unbalanced moments in column-slab connection. Since the use of high strength concrete recently has become in practice for reinforced concrete structures, it is highly desired to establish the structural design method for flat plate construction using high strength concrete. In this paper, interior column-slab connection constructed with high strength concrete were tested under lateral and gravity loads to evaluate their strength and behavior. The test parameters were slab reinforcement ratio and the gravity load levels.

  • The use of light-gauge steel framing in low-rise commercial and industrial building construction has experienced a significant increase in recent years. In such construction, the wall framing is an assembly of cold-formed steel (CFS) studs held between top and bottom CFS tracks. Current construction methods utilize heavy hot-rolled steel sections, such as steel angles or hollow structural section tubes, to transfer the load from the end seats of the floor joist and/or from the load-bearing wall studs of the stories above to the supporting load-bearing wall below. The use of hot rolled steel elements results in significant increase in construction cost and time. Such heavy steel elements would be unnecessary if the concrete slab thickening on top of the CFS wall can be made to act compositely with the CFS track. Composite action can be achieved by attaching stand-off screws to the track and encapsulating the screw shank in the deck concrete. A series of experimental studies were performed on full-scale test specimens representing concrete/CFS flexural elements under gravity loads. The studies were designed to investigate the structural performance of concrete/CFS simple beams and concrete/CFS continuous headers. The results indicate that concrete/CFS composite flexural elements are feasible and their structural behavior can be modeled with reasonable accuracy.

A frictionless contact problem for two elastic layers supported by a Winkler foundation

  • The plane contact problem for two infinite elastic layers whose elastic constants and heights are different is considered. The layers lying on a Winkler foundation are acted upon by symmetrical distributed loads whose lengths are 2a applied to the upper layer and uniform vertical body forces due to the effect of gravity in the layers. It is assumed that the contact between two elastic layers is frictionless and that only compressive normal tractions can be transmitted through the interface. The contact along the interface will be continuous if the value of the load factor, ${\lambda}$, is less than a critical value. However, interface separation takes place if it exceeds this critical value. First, the problem of continuous contact is solved and the value of the critical load factor, ${\lambda}_{cr}$, is determined. Then, the discontinuous contact problem is formulated in terms of a singular integral equation. Numerical solutions for contact stress distribution, the size of the separation areas, critical load factor and separation distance, and vertical displacement in the separation zone are given for various dimensionless quantities and distributed loads.

Effect of Earthquake characteristics on seismic progressive collapse potential in steel moment resisting frame

  • According to the definition, progressive collapse could occur due to the initial partial failure of the structural members which by spreading to the adjacent members, could result in partial or overall collapse of the structure. Up to now, most researchers have investigated the progressive collapse due to explosion, fire or impact loads. But new research has shown that the seismic load could also be a factor for initiation of the progressive collapse. In this research, the progressive collapse capacity for the 5 and 15-story steel special moment resisting frames using push-down nonlinear static analysis, and nonlinear dynamic analysis under the gravity loads specified in the GSA Guidelines, were studied. After identifying the critical members, in order to investigate the seismic progressive collapse, the 5-story steel special moment resisting frame was analyzed by the nonlinear time history analysis under the effect of earthquakes with different characteristics. In order to account for the initial damage, one of the critical columns was weakened at the initiation of the earthquake or its Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA). The results of progressive collapse analyses showed that the potential of progressive collapse is considerably dependent upon location of the removed column and the number of stories, also the results of seismic progressive collapse showed that the dynamic response of column removal under the seismic load is completely dependent on earthquake characteristics like Arias intensity, PGA and earthquake frequency contents.

Analysis of the Static Characteristics of High-Rise Structures With Twisted Shape (비틀어진 형상(Twisted)을 가지는 고층 구조물의 역학적 특성 분석)

  • In this study, structural characteristics were analyzed by combining gravity load and lateral loads such as seismic loads through static analysis of example structures, and the static characteristics of the twisted structure according to the plane rotation angle were also analyzed. Example structures were selected as regular structure, and twisted structures; 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 degree angle of rotation per story, and static analysis was performed by the load combination case 1 and case 2. As a result the story drift ratio of the twisted-shaped structure also increased as the plane rotation angle per story increased. The eccentricity according to the load combination was the highest in the lower stories of all analysis models, and the eccentricity was found to be larger as the rotation angle decreased. The twisted-shaped structure was more responsible for the bending moment of the column than the regular structure, and the vertical member axial force of all analysis models was almost similar.

  • The present investigation deals with the production of the innovative lightweight fly ash angular aggregates (FAA) first time in India using local class 'F' fly ash, its characterization, and exploring the potential for its utilization as alternative coarse aggregates in structural concrete applications. Two types of aggregates are manufactured using two different kinds of binders. The manufacturing process involves mixing fly ash, binder, and water, followed by the briquetting process, sintering and crushing them into suitable size aggregates. Tests are conducted on fly ash angular aggregates to measure their physical properties such as crushing value, impact value, specific gravity, water absorption, bulk density, and percentage of voids. Study shows that the physical parameters are significantly enhanced as compared to commercially available fly ash pellets (FAP). The developed FAA are used in concrete vis-à-vis conventional granite aggregates and FAP to determine their compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths. Although being lightweight, the strength parameters for concrete containing FAA are well compared with conventional concrete. This might be due to the high pozzolanic reaction between fly ash angular aggregates and cement paste. Also, RCC beams are cast and the load-deflection behaviour and ultimate load carrying capacity signify that FAA can be suitably used for RCC construction. Hence, the utilization of fly ash as angular aggregates can reduce the dead load of the structure and at the same time serves as a solution for fly ash disposal and mineral depletion problem.
