Among trip distribution models, The BPR type Gravity Model is the one which is the most widely used. The key issue associated with this model is a functional form of friction factor which should be calibrated in the process, and interpretation for socioeconomic factor known as K-factor(Kij) which is used to adjust the difference between observed zone-to-zone trips and the estimated trips. In this study, the BPR type Gravity Model has been fitted to 1990 O/D data for Seoul. Two type of function form for friction factor has been employed : one is a form of Generalized function and the orther is UTP function. With above two function, the parameters for travel distance(Skin-tree) are prepared. The relationship between socioeconomic factor and trips is identified by calculating and analyzing the characteristics of Kij. Consequently, both of the friction factor functions are statistically signified. However, it show an overestimation tendency when estimated with UTP function. It is found that the Generalized function is suitable for the city of Seoul, and also, in case there are a lot of trips correlatively, the socioeconomic factor is close to 1, on the other hand if it's small, it shows a bias which is dispersed around 1.
Bayesian inversion for gravity and resistivity data was performed to investigate the cavity structure appearing as a lava tunnel in Cheju Island, Korea. Dipole-dipole DC resistivity data were proposed for a prior information of gravity data and we applied the geostatistical techniques such as kriging and simulation algorithms to provide a prior model information and covariance matrix in data domain. The inverted resistivity section gave the indicator variogram modeling for each threshold and it provided spatial uncertainty to give a prior PDF by sequential indicator simulations. We also presented a more objective way to make data covariance matrix that reflects the state of the achieved field data by geostatistical technique, cross-validation. Then Gaussian approximation was adopted for the inference of characteristics of the marginal distributions of model parameters and Broyden update for simple calculation of sensitivity matrix and SVD was applied. Generally cavity investigation by geophysical exploration is difficult and success is hard to be achieved. However, this exotic multiple interpretations showed remarkable improvement and stability for interpretation when compared to data-fit alone results, and suggested the possibility of diverse application for Bayesian inversion in geophysical inverse problem.
The three-dimensional distribution of the fault was evaluated using gravity field interpretation such as curvature analysis and Euler deconvolution in the Seoul-Gyeonggi region where the Chugaryeong fault zone was developed. In addition, earthquakes that occurred after 2000 and the location of faults were compared. In Bouguer anomaly of Chugaryeong faults, the Pocheon Fault is an approximately 100 km fault that is extended from the northern part of Gyeonggi Province to the west coast through the central part of Seoul. Considering the frequency of epicenters is high, there is a possibility of an active fault. The Wangsukcheon Fault is divided into the northeast and southwest parts of Seoul, but it shows that the fault is connected underground in the bouguer anomaly. The magnitude 3.0 earthquake that occurred in Siheung city in 2010 occurred in an anticipated fault (aF) that developed in the north-south direction. In the western region of the Dongducheon Fault (≒5,500 m), the density boundary of the rock mass is deeper than that in the eastern region (≒4,000 m), suggesting that the tectonic movements of the western and eastern regions of the Dongducheon Fault is different. The maximum depth of the fracture zone developed in the Dongducheon Fault is about 6,500 m, and it is the deepest in the research area. It is estimated that the fracture zone extends to a depth of about 6,000 m for the Pocheon Fault, about 5,000 m for the Wangsukcheon Fault, and about 6,000 m for the Gyeonggang Fault.
A gravity survey was conducted in the western Marquette district, Michigan, to delineate the subsurface structure and the relationship of the Proterozoic Marquette Range Supergroup rocks (Precambrian X) and Archean basement (Precambrian W) where the Republic, Michigan River, and Marquette troughs join. In order to accomplish these purposes, three hundred and forty gravity stations were established in the area of $380km^2$. Positive anomalies are associated with the Precambria X, metasedimentary sequence which has a higer density with respect to the Precambrian W, basement rocks. The dominant positive gravity anomalies follow the axes of the three troughs which are filled with Precambrian X rocks. Subsurface structure was modelled by using the Talwani method. Gravity model studies indicate that the Marquette trough is asymetrically shaped and steeply dipping at the north edge except in the eastern part of the study area. The interpretive results obtained from two dimensional model studies suggest that the basement structure of the study area is relatively flat, and that the troughs were formed contemporaneously.
The area where age dating of the seafloor and interpretation of geomagnetic basic structure are conducted is also important in the aspect of geophysics. Near the sea mount (water depth to the top is 3900m and 6500m to the bottom), there are Mesozoic magnetic lineations at the sea-side flank along the trench axis. A two dimensional model analysis of Talwani and Heirtzler(1964) and a three dimensional model analysis of Talwani are performed by using data obtained from the marine proton magnetometer. Distribution, direction of the lineation, amplitude and period of magnetic anomaly are correlated and analysed with speed of the plate movement and lineation of the sea mount. In the west and north-west Pacific there are lots of huge sea mounts retaining the history of oceanic crust. This indicates that geomagnetic basis subsided into the oceanic crust and has interest in the aspects of the isostasy theory of the gravity.
Recent earthquakes near nuclear power plants in Korea have triggered public concerns about possible seismicity of the Ulsan Fault Zone in the south-eastern part of the Korean peninsula. To reveal subsurface structures of this fault zone, we conducted high-resolution seismic refraction and reflection surveys, and closely spaced gravity measurements in the Dongchon River valley north of Ulsan, Korea. Here alluvium covers the north-south trending fault zone in a 1-km wide valley. Both source points and receivers were spaced at 5-m intervals for the 24-channel seismic refraction and reflection methods, along two profiles of 835 m and 415 m length. Gravity data were also measured along these profiles at 131 stations using a 10-m interval. Synergetic interpretation of seismic refraction, high-resolution seismic reflection, and gravity surveys across the valley indicates that the Ulsan Fault Zone was formed by apparent north-south strike-slip motions during the Cretaceous, and that some faults may have been reactivated by east-west compressional or transpressional stresses during the Tertiary or Quaternary.
Gravity field analysis and density modeling were performed to evaluate the internal state of the rock mass, which is the cause of cut slope collapse. The shape of the weathered zone and the depth of basement could be confirmed from the complete Bouguer anomaly and density model. The basement depth at the center of the cut slope calculated using the Euler deconvolution inverse method is 30 m, which is about 10 m deeper than the surrounding area. In addition, the depth of basement and the thickness of the weathered zone are similar to the boundary between low resistivity and high resistivity in dipole-dipole survey. From the study results, gravity field analysis and density modeling recognizes the internal state of the rock slope and can be used for slope safety analysis, and is particularly suitable as a method to determine the shape of weathered zones in interpreting the safety of cut slopes

We have studied the feasibility of geostatistics approach to enhancing analysis of sparsely obtained seismic data by combining with satellite gravity data. The shallow depth and numerous fishing nets in The Yellow Sea, west of Korea, makes it difficult to do seismic surveys in this area. Therefore, we have attempted to use geostatistics to integrate the seismic data along with gravity data. To evaluate the feasibility of this approach, we have extracted only a few seismic profile data from previous surveys in the Yellow Sea and performed integrated analysis combining with the results from gravity data under the assumption that seismic velocity and density have a high physical correlation. First, we analyzed the correlation between extracted seismic profiles and depths obtained from gravity inversion. Next, we transferred the gravity depth to travel time using non-linear indicator transform and analyze residual values by kriging with varying local means. Finally, the reconstructed time structure map was compared with the original seismic section given in the previous study. Our geostatistical approach demonstrates relatively satisfactory results and especially, in the boundary area where seismic lines are sparse, gives us more in-depth information than previously available.
Gravity anomalies observed in shipborne survey are usually distorted by bad weather conditions and unexpected vessel movement. These distorted data should be removed because they may mislead the data interpretation. However, it is not possible to perfectly remove all erroneous data. Cross-over point correction, which is generally used, only reduces the errors at cross-over points, and thus the data still contain error values. To resolve this drawback, Rauch-Tung-Striebel(RTS) filter was adopted to minimize all errors in the data and at cross-over points. After applying this method, the range of anomaly variation is reduced from 15 mGal to less than 2 mGal, and errors at the cross-over points are minimized from 4.21 mGal to 2.95 mGal. The results imply that RTS filter is very useful to reduce errors in the data and corss-over points.
In the present study a two-mode, separately concurring resonant cavity model is proposed for theoretical interpretation of the 3 minute umbral oscillation. The proposed model has been investigated by calculating the transmission coefficients of the waves propagating through the umbral photosphere (photospheric weak-field cavity) and chromosphere (chromospheric strong-field cavity) into the corona, for 3 different umbral model atmospheres by Staude (1982), Beebe et al. (1982) and Avrett (1981). In computing the transmission coefficients we made use of multi-layer approximation by representing the umbra] atmosphere by a number of separate layers with (1) temperature varying linearly with depth and (2) temperature constant within each layer. The medium is assumed to be compressible, non-viscous, perfectly conducting under gravity. The computed resonant periods, transmission spectra, phase spectra, and kinetic energy density of the waves associated with the oscillations are presented in comparison with the observations and their model dependent characteristics are discussed.
