In Korea, the production of reclaimed concrete materials has been increased due to the increase in the concrete structures taken down every year. The reclaimed concrete materials have been reused as road materials. However, the studies on their mechanical and environmental properties have been very limited. The recycled rate of the materials is currently low in Korea. This paper presents the investigation of mechanical and environmental properties of the reclaimed concrete materials, as well as the comparisons with those of gravel. For the evaluation of the mechanical and environmental characteristics, following tests were conducted on both reclamed materials and gravel; liquid limit, plasticity index, CBR, sand equivalent test, abrasion test, pH test, and column leaching test. The test results showed that the reclaimed concretes satisfy the requirements for use as roadbase, subbase, and subgrade materials, except base materials. The pH of reclaimed concrete materials was less than 11 and the leaching test results satisfied the regulatory requirement of Waste Management Act in Korea. Based on the investigations, it appears that the reclaimed concrete materials are environmentally safe and applicable for use as road materials.
Stone column is the method that replace soft ground such as weak clay and loose sand with gravel or crushed stone which has relatively high stiffness and low compressive. Stone column increases bearing capacity of the soft ground, reduces settlement, produces ground improvement effect by consolidation drain, and is effective to prevent soil liquefaction in sandy ground during an earthquake. Stone column has been used in many civil works, and has recorded quite a lot of construction achievement internationally, but there is no standardized settlement calculation method yet. Therefore, in this study, the applicability of the existing theoretical equations were evaluated through comparison and analysis to predict a reasonable settlement of the Stone column. Consequently, Hook's law formula was verified to be the most close to numerical analysis.

A series of resonant column test was performed to investigate the dynamic deformation characteristics of silty sand soils mixed with polypropylene fibrillated type fiber. Results show that optimum mixing ratios were $0.2\%$ for 19mm of cut fiber for shear modulus and $0.1\%$ for 60mm cut fiber fur damping ratio. As shear strain was increased, normalized values of shear modulus (G(Reinforced)/ G(Unreinforced)) of fiber reinforced soil were increased up to $10^{-3}\%\~10^{-1}\%$ ranges. However, normalized damping ratio (D(Reinforced/D(Unreinforced)) was diminished with an increase in strain beyond $10^{-3}\%\~10^{-1}\%$ for the damping capacity of soils mixed with fiber. Normalized shear modulus $(G/G_{max})$ obtained from the test was plotted in the chart suggested by Seed and Idriss. The shear modulus of silty sand was located between sand and gravel curves.
This research was conducted to determine the effect of interruption layer for capillary rise on the sand based growing media when growing Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) on soil reclamation and saline water irrigation. Growing media profile consists of three layers as top soil of 30 cm, 20 cm of the interruption layer for capillary rise and 10 cm of reclaimed paddy soil. Growing media profile was packed in 30 cm diameter column pots. The top soil was a mixture of sand dredged up from Lake Bhunam Tae Ahn, Korea and peat at the ratio of 95:5 by volume. Bottom part of column was covered with plastic net and the pots were soaked into 5 cm depth saline water reservoir with salinity $3-5\;dS\;m^{-1}$. Kentucky bluegrass was established by sod and irrigated using $2\;dS\;m^{-1}$ saline water ($5.7\;mm\;day^{-1}$) in 3 days interval. The results showed that the largest accumulation of salt in the spring with electrical conductivity in saturated extract (ECe) of $5.4\;dS\;m^{-1}$ and sodium absorption ratio (SAR) 34.0 in growing media without the interruption layer for capillary rise and ECe of $4.6\;dS\;m^{-1}$ and SAR 8.24 at growing media using gravel as the interruption layer for capillary rise material. The interruption layer for capillary rise of gravel and coarse sand reduced the accumulation of Na by 16% and 25%, ECe by 7% and 13% in the growing media. Visual quality of Kentucky bluegrass was higher in growing media with the interruption layer for capillary rise of gravel than no interruption layer by 8.3 compared to 7.9 in rates. The interruption layer for capillary rise of gravel and coarse sand enhanced the visual quality by 4.1 and 4.0%, root length by 50 and 38%, and root dry weight by 35 and 17% of Kentucky bluegrass, and reduced the accumulation of Na by 16% and 25%, ECe by 7% and 13% in the growing media.
Stone columns is the ground improvement method which composed of compacted gravel or crushed stone inserted into the soft ground consisting of loose sand and clay. There are many difficulties in quantitative analysis of soil-pile interaction because settlement behavior of stone columns is affected by various parameters. In this study, various parameters of behavior of end-bearing group piles are investigated by load tests. Finally, the improved characteristics of soft ground and the influence of design parameters are investigated in this study using PR (performance ratio) value. From the PR value calculation and test results, we know that settlement behavior of stone columns is affected by area replacement ratio of composite ground, diameter of column rather than embedment ratio and mat.
We studied the bottom morphology and sedimentary environments of the Masan Bay using high-resolution Chirp seismic profiles and sediments data. According to deep-drilled core samples (up to 20 m thick) penetrated into the weathered rock basement, the sediments consist largely of three sediment types: the lower sandy gravel facies (Unit I) of 1-4 m in thickness, the middle sandy mud and/or muddy sand facies(Unit II) of 1-2 m thick and the upper mudfacies (Unit III) of over 10 m in thickness. The sedimentary column above the acoustic basement can be divided into two major sequences by a relatively strong mid-reflector, which show the lower sedimentary sequenc e(T) with parallel to subparallel internal reflectors and the upper sedimentary sequence(H) with free acoustic patterns. Acoustic basement, the lower sedimentary sequence (T), and the upper sequence (H) are well correlated with poorly sorted massive sandy gravels (Unit I), the sand/mud-mixed sediment (Unit II), and the muddy facies(Unit III), respectively. The acoustic facies and sediment data suggest that the Masan bay is one of the most typical semi-enclosed coastal embayments developed during the Holocene sea-level changes. The area of the Masan Bay reduced from about $19\;km^2$ in 1964 to about $13\;km^2$ in 2005 by reclamation, and its bottom morphology changed as a result of dredging of about $2{\times}10^7\;m^3$.

This research was conducted to determine the effect of capillary rise interruption layer on the sand based growing media when growing Kentucky bluegrass under soil reclamation and saline water irrigation. Rootzone profile consists of three layers as top soil of 30 cm, 20 cm of capillary interruption layer and 10 cm of reclaimed paddy soil. Rootzone profile was packed in column pots. The top soil was a mixture of sand dredged up from Lake Bhunam Tae Ahn, Korea and peat at the ratio of 95:5 by volume. Bottom part of column was covered with plastic net and the pots were soaked into 5 cm depth saline water reservoir with salinity $3-5dsm^{-1}$. Kentucky bluegrass was installed by sod and irrigated using $2dSm^{-1}$ saline water(5.7mm $day^{-1}$)in 3days interval. The results showed that the largest accumulation of salt in the spring with ECe of $5.4dSm^{-1}$ and SAR34.0 in rootzone with out capillary rise interruption layer and ECe of $4.6dSm^{-1}$ and SAR8.24 at rootzone using gravel as capillary rise interruption layer material. Kentucky bluegrass grown in growing media with gravel as capillary rise interruption layer resulted in the average visual quality rate of 8.1and clipping dry weight of $24.8gm^{-2}$, while Kentucky bluegrass grown in the growing media with out capillary rise interruption layer showed the visual quality rate of 7.9 and clipping dry weight of $34g.m^{-2}$. Capillary rise interruption layer of gravel and coarses and enhanced the visual quality by 4.1and 4.0%, root length by 50 and 38%, and root dryweight by 35and 17% of Kentucky bluegrass, and reduced the accumulation of Na by 16% and 25%, ECe by 7% and 13% in the rootzone.
A set of lab-scale polymer synthetic fiber packed column wetlands composing three columns (CW1, CW2 and CW3) with different hydraulic regimes, recirculation frequencies and pollutant loading rates, were operated in 2012. Synthetic fiber tested as an alternative wetland medium for soil mixture or gravel which has been widely used, has very high pore size and volume, so that clogging opportunity can be greatly avoided. The inflow to the wetland was artificial stormwater. All the wetlands achieved effective removal of TSS (94%~96%), TCOD (68%~73%), TN (35%~58%), TKN (62%~73%) and NH4-N (85%~ 99%). Particularly, it was observed that COD was released from the fiber during one distinct period in all wetlands. This was probably due to the degradation of polymer fiber, and the released organic matters were found to serve as carbon source for denitrification. In addition, with longer retention time and frequent recirculation, lower effluent concentration was observed. With higher pollutant loading rate, higher nitrification and denitrification rates were achieved. However, although organic matters were released from the fiber, the lack of carbon source was still the limiting factor for the system since the release persisted only for 40 days.
Vertical drain has usually been used to accelerate the consolidation of soft clay deposits with high moisture content. Busan thick clay deposits are subjected to artesian pressure from an aquifer in sand and gravel layers. However, effect of artesian pressure existing in drainage-installed soft ground on consolidation behaviors is not well known. This paper investigates the consolidation behavior of drainage-installed soft ground at the Nakdong river estuary with artesian pressure and without artesian pressure. A series of one-dimensional large size column test was carried out to find out the consolidation characteristics of clay. Test results indicated that total settlement of clay with artesian pressure was higher than that without artesian pressure because effective stress decreased due to upward flow. Dissipation rate of excess pore water pressure delayed and excess pore water pressure did not fully dissipate in clay layer with artesian pressure. Undrained shear strength of clay ground with artesian pressure was lower than that without artesian pressure.

This study introduces a reinforcement work case using Twin-Jet Method. The area is located behind the abutment of the bridges built on soft clay along the $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ Express Highway. Its foundation was constructed by installing EPS blocks on the original ground to reduce the embankment load under the highway. However, the ground deformation has continuously occurred due to the settlement of the foundation soft cohesive soils. The amounts of subsidences at the surface turned out to be 20~30.0mm, After the pavement patch work on April 23, 2009, a drastic subsidence occurred together with 10mm swell, For this reason, Twin-Jet grout column construction was applied by passing through the EPS banking blocks without closing traffic flows on the express highway. The outcomes of core sample tests after reinforcing the ground turned out to be TCR 92.5%, RQD 64.6% and unconfined compressive strength 2.3~8.6Mpa. The test results showed that the condition of the ground foundation had improved using Twin-Jet grouting in most layers of ground including the cobble and gravel layer.
