  • We studied the anchoring properties in photo-aligned periodic domains of liquid crystals (LCs) in an alternating homeotropic and hybrid geometry. In this geometry, the surface anchoring energy was determined in using the director-distorted length of the LC near domain boundary, calculated in a linear approximation of the director profile within the continuum theory. The measurements were made using the LC diffraction grating with the phase profile in the form of a trapezoid.

  • In this paper, a method based on the Genetic Algorithm(GA) for phase optimization is proposed. The programmable hybrid optical interconnection system implemented by the spatial light modula-tor is tested for a near-real-time optical processing. Designed diffractive grating has a 74.7[%] high diffraction efficiency and a $1.73 {\times}10^{-1}$ uniformity quantitatively. The dependence of characteris-tics on several parameters in the grating design are analyzed. Also, as a result of the geometrical transformation to obtain quantitative data for $3 {\times} 3$ spot beams, an objective optical experiment using CCD array detector produces the mean of beam intensity as a gray level of 202, the maximum value is 225, the minimum value is 186, and uniformity is quantitatively $1.93 {\times} 10^{-1}$, similar to the simulation result.

  • Influence of the grating half-period fluctuation on the normalized coupling coefficient has been studied by an effective index transfer matrix method in quarter wavelength shifted(QWS) DFB lasers. The laser facets are assumed to be perfectly antireflection coated, and the period fluctuation is modeled by two correlated Gaussian random variables. In the presence of the random fluctuation in the grating period, effective normalized coupling coefficient is reduced because the in-phase feedback strength Is weakened. We have shown that the normalized coupling coefficient determined from the side mode spacing is less than the effective coupling coefficient, and the normalized coupling coefficient determined from the mode spacing or spontaneous emission spectrum does not properly represent the feedback strength of the grating.

  • Low temperature plasma diagnosis is one of the big issues in laboratory scale or processing industry. One of the most powerful techniques of plasma diagnostics is the use of the scattering of electromagnetic radiation from the plasma. Electron temperature and density are important parameters for understanding the information of plasmas in the plasma processing industry. Laser scattering experiments on plasma can provide a substantial amount of information about plasma parameters such as the electron density ne, the electron temperature Te, and the neutral density nn and temperature Tn. Thomson scattering spectroscopy is used several method, in accordance with detector type. Commonly, Thomson scattering is used several notch filter to separate expanded wavelength. Since using a spectrometer with surface relief grating or notch filter, the system of the measurement will be complicated and bigger. In this study, using VPHG (Volume Phase Holographic Grating) in order to install the simple and cheap system. VPHG has the advantage of the system installation, because it can be Transmission Type. The diffraction efficiency and dispersion angle of VPHG is higher than the surface relief grating relatively. For a wavelength and bandwidth selection, Using a slit or mask to select a rejection wavelength instead of notch filter.

  • Fiber Bragg grating which has a blazed ang1e to the plane of incident wave generates a side-mode as well as main-mode. The side-mode has an identical characteristics with a long period grating that couples with a cladding mode, so rejects the special wavelength. We experimented on the side-mode characteristics with two fibers which Ge doped depressed index fiber and very high photosensitive H$_2$ loaded step index fiber according to the tilted angle. Also, using a phase mask equipped with rotation plate which has 0.02$^{\circ}$ resolution, we can control the bandwidth and the peak value of a total loss spectrum by aligned tilted grating in a fiber and using this, tried to compose the ASE band rejection filter of the Erbium doped fiber amplifier.

  • Lasers for optical broadband communication systems should have excellent frequency selectivity and modal stability. DFB lasers have low lasing frequency shift during high speed current modulation. In this paper, we have developed a simulation software and analysed beam profiles of a lasing mode in longitudinal direction of an 1.55um DFB laser with two mirrors and without anti-reflection coatings, that have both an index- and gain-gratings. As the phases of the index and gain gratings on the mirror faces are varied, the beam profiles |R(z)| and |S(z)| of the lasing mode with the emitted power ratio Pl/pr are analysed and examined. In order to reduce the threshold current of a lasing mode and enhance the frequency stability, κL should be greater than 8, regardless of the grating phases on the mirror faces.

  • A microstrip polarized 8${\times}$2 linear phased array antenna with four 4-bit phase shifters is designed at 10 GHz. The 180$^{\circ}$and 90$^{\circ}$ sections of the phase shifter are of the switched line type, and the rests are of the loaded line type. A 2${\times}$2 sequential sub-array is adopted for a broad axial ratio bandwidth. The construction of the array antenna is of the tile type placing the phase shifters on the same layer containing the feed network. The element spacing is chosen to be 0.45λ$\sub$0/ to exclude the grating lobe. Measurement results show a gain 9.69 dB at broadside and 8.3 dB at the beam-tilt angle of 16$^{\circ}$ by imposing a progressive phase of 90$^{\circ}$.

  • In this paper, I introduce a novel design method of a high performance nanophotonic beam deflector providing broadband operation, large active tunability, and signal efficiency, simultaneously. By combining thermo-optically tunable vanadium dioxide nano-ridges and a metallic mirror, reconfigurable local optical phase of reflected diffraction beams can be engineered in a desired manner over broad bandwidth. The active metagrating deflectors are systematically designed for tunable deflection of reflection beams according to the thermal phase-change of vanadium dioxide nano-ridges. Moreover, by multiplexing the phase-change supercells, a robust design of actively tunable beam splitter is also verified numerically. It is expected that the proposed intuitive and simple design method would contribute to development of next-generation optical interconnects and spatial light modulators with high performances. The author also envisions that this study would be fruitful for modern holographic displays and three-dimensional depth sensing technologies.

  • In long-period fiber grating (LPFG) to be made up optical fiber sensors, resonance coupling occurs between the forward-propagating core mode and cladding modes at the wavelength that satisfy the Phase matching condition. The resonance wavelength and the coupling strength depends strongly on the external environment like temperature, strain, and ambient index. These characteristics can be utilized for various applications as optical fiber sensors. fabrication of optical fiber gratings is typically based on the photosensitivity effect, i.e. the permanent change of the refractive index upon irradiation of the UV beam, and therefore, fabrication of the optical fiber with high phososensitivity is an important part of the research on optical fiber gratings. In this work, we measured the effort of to-doping of boron on the index difference between the core and cladding of the optical fiber and the sensitivity of the LPFC to the temperature and bending changes. We observed that the index difference between the core and the cladding decreased by $(1.69{\times}10^{-4}/SCCM)$ and the temperature sensitivity of the resonance wavelength shirt decreased by $(0.01145nm/^{\circ}C/SCCM)$. The dependence or the bending-induced changes or the transmission characteristics of LPFG on the tore-cladding index difference was investigated experimentally. The measurement results indicate that the bending sensitivity increases as the index difference decreases.

  • The light and energy-efficiency of classical liquid crystal displays is notoriously poor due to the use of absorption-based linear polarisers and colour filters. For instance, the light efficiency of PVAL polarisers is typically between 40 and 45 % and the colour filters have a typical efficiency below 35 % which results in a total light and energy-efficiency of the display below 10 %. In the past, a variety of polarizers were developed with an enhanced efficiency in generating linearly polarized light. Typically, these polarizers are based on the polarisationselective reflection, scattering or refraction of light i.e. one polarisation direction of light is directly transmitted to the LCD/viewer and the other polarization direction of light is depolarised and recycled which results in a typical efficiency for generating linearly polarized light of 70-85 %. Also, special colour filters have been proposed based on chiral-nematic reactive mesogens which increase the efficiency of generating colour. Despite the enormous progress in this field, a need persists for improved methods for generating polarized light and colour based on low cost optical components with a high efficiency. Here, the use of holographic phase gratings is reported for the generation of polarized light and colour. The phase grating are recorded in a photopolymer which is coated onto a backor frontlight for LCDs. Typically the recording is performed in the transmisson mode or in the waveguiding mode and slanted phase gratings are generated with their refractive index modulation at an angle between 20o and 45o with the normal of the substrate. It is shown that phase gratings with a high refractive index modulation and a high efficiency can be generated by a proper selection of the photopolymer and illumination conditions. These phase gratings coupleout linearly polarized light with a high contrast (> 100) and the light is directed directly to the LCD/viewer without the need for redirection foils. Dependent on the type of phase grating, the different colours are coupled-out at a slightly different angle which potentially increases the efficiency of classical colour filters. Moreover, the phase gratings are completely transparent in direct view which opens the possibility to use them in frontlights for LCDs. Holographic polarization gratings posses a periodic pattern in the polarization state of light (and not in the intensity of light). A periodic pattern in the polarization direction of linearly polarized light is obtained upon interference of two circularly polarized laser beams. In the second part of the lecture, it is shown that these periodic polarization patterns can be recorded in a linear photo-polymerizable polymer (LPP) and that such an alignment layer induces a period rotation in the director of (reactive and non-reactive) liquid crystals. By a proper design, optical components can be produced with only first order diffraction and with a very high efficiency (>0.98). It is shown that these diffraction gratings are potentially useful in projection displays with a high brightness and energy efficiency
