  • Performing a series of in-situ thermal response tests, the effective thermal conductivity of six vertical closed-loop ground heat exchangers was experimentally evaluated and compared each other, which were constructed in a test bed in Wonju. To compare thermal efficiency of the ground heat exchangers in field, the six boreholes were constructed with different construction conditions: grouting materials (cement vs. bentonite), different additives (silica sand vs. graphite) and the shape of pipe-sections (general U-loop type vs. 3 pipe-type). From the test results, it can be concluded that cement grouting has a higher effective thermal conductivity than that of bentonite grouting, and the efficiency of graphite better performs over silica sand as a thermally-enhancing addictive. In addition, a new 3 pipe-type heat exchanger provides less thermal interference between the inlet and outlet pipe than the conventional U-loop type heat exchanger, which results in superior thermal performance.

  • The growth characteristics of bainite at early stage in the fast quenched spheroidal graphite cast irons containing 0.06%Mn and 0.45%Mn during austempering process, was investigated with optical and scanning electron microscope. The following results regarding the effects of Mn and isothermal heat treatment on the morphological variation of bainitic ferrite were obtained. The morphology of bainite varies from acicular below 350$^{\circ}C$ to feather shape above 350$^{\circ}C$. The period of isothermal treatment also affects the shape of bainite at the fixed temperature. At 350$^{\circ}C$, bainite is bamboo leaf-like up to 200 secs of isothermal holding time and with further increasing time up to 300 secs, changes to a mixed structure consisting of both feather and bamboo leaf and, finally becomes all feather shape at 900 secs. The morphology of bainitic ferrite formed at early stage of 300$^{\circ}C$ isothermal treatment is similar to that of bainitic ferrite formed at 250$^{\circ}C$ or 350$^{\circ}C$ with unbranched, linear ferrite. However, bainitic ferrite divides into branches with increasing isothermal treatment, which occurs more fast at 400$^{\circ}C$ than at 350$^{\circ}C$. The difference in adding amount of Mn influences the morphology of bainitic ferrite in upper bainite. The bainitic ferrite with 0.45%Mn is observed to be more stable than that with 0.06%Mn, remaining unbranched for a longer period at the same temperature.

  • The effect of nucleation free energy related to Si surface states on diamond film growth behavior has been studied. Ar first, the three kinds of diamond thin films (A, B, C) were deposited on various Si substrates (A-Si, B-Si, C-Si) whose surfaces were polished with 1 ${\mu}m$ diamond paste, 6 ${\mu}m$ Al_2O_3$ powder and 12 ${\mu}m$ Al_2O_3$ powder respectively. And then, relative nucleation free energy calculated is ${\Delta}G_{A-Si}<{\Delta}G_{B-Si}<{\Delta}G_{C-Si}$. Although there are some difference in grain size, shape and nucleated size, the thin films on A-Si and B-Si were diamond including a small amount of DLC which was confirmed by AES, SEM, XRD, and RHEED. Namely, the diamonds of films (B) were not nucleated in scratches but in dents and larger in grain size compare with the film (C) of which diamond sere nucleated not only scratches but also dents. And, the sphere diamond which is not general shape was grown on C-Si. After all, the sphere was turned out to be the diamond including much graphite as a result of the AES in situ depth profiling. Consequently, the diamond shape and quality grown on Si were Changed from the crystal which the (100) and (110) planes were predominent to the crystal in which (111) plane was predominent, and newt to sphere shape diamond including much graphite according as the nucleation free energy increases.

  • Characteristics of reduction properties and carbon deposition of $CuFe_2O_4$ and $Fe_3O_4$ were investigated by using TGA, XRD, SEM, TEM and gas analysis at $900^{\circ}C$. XRD analyses indicated that the reduced $Fe_3O_4$ was composed of Fe, graphite and $Fe_3C$ phases. In contrast, the reduced $CuFe_2O_4$ did not show the graphite or $Fe_3C$ phases. It was observed by SEM analysis that the surface of the $Fe_3O_4$ was completely covered with carbon, after methane partial oxidation. From gas analysis, $CuFe_2O_4$ showed much higher methane conversion and reduction kinetics as compared to the $Fe_3O_4$ under the same reaction conditions and the estimated carbon deposition amounts on the reduced $CuFe_2O_4$ was much lower than those on the reduced $Fe_3O_4$ during the syngas production process. It was found by TEM that carbon on the reduced $Fe_3O_4$ particles has a platelet shape.

  • This study examined the catalytic property of Ni-catalyst used in the gas purifying process to manufacture inert gases of N2 and Ar with high-purity over 9N for semiconductor industrial applications. Two types of Ni-catalysts with a cylindrical shape (C1) and churros shape structure (C2) were compared for the assessment. Optical microscopy and FESEM were used to analyze the shape and microstructure of the Ni-catalyst. EDS, XRD, and micro-Raman characterization were performed to examine the composition and properties. BET and Pulse Titration analyses were conducted to check the surface area and catalytic property of the Ni-catalyst. From the composition analysis results, C1 contained a relatively large amount of graphite as an impurity, and C2 contained higher Ni contents than C1. From specific surface area analysis, the specific surface area of C2 was approximately 1.69 times larger than that of C1. From catalytic property analysis, outstanding performance in O2 and CO impurity removal was observed at room temperature. Therefore, C2, having low-impurity and large specific surface area, is a suitable catalyst for the high-purity inert gas process in the semiconductor industry because of its outstanding performance in O2 and CO impurity removal at room temperature.

  • Polysilicon on insulator has been recrystallized by zone melting recrystallization method with graphite strip heaters. Experiments are performed with non-seed SOI structures. When the capping layer thickness of Si$\_$3/N$\_$4//SiO$\_$2/ is 2.0.mu.m, grain boundaries are about 120.mu.m spacing and protrusions reduced. After the seed SOI films are annealed at 1100.deg. C in NH$\_$3/ ambient for 3 hours, the recrystallized silicon surface has convex shape. After ZMR process, the tensile stress is 2.49*10$\^$9/dyn/cm$\^$2/ and 3.74*10$\^$9/dyn/cm$\^$2/ in the seed edge and seed center regions. The phenomenon of convex shape and tensile stress difference are completely eliminated by using the PSG/SiO$\_$2/ capping layer. The characterization of SOI films are showed that the SOI films are improved in wetting properties. N channel SOI MOSFET has been fabricated to investigate the electrical characteristics of the recrystallized SOI films. In the 0.7.mu.m thickness SOI MOSFET, kink effects due to the floating substrate occur and the electron mobility was calculated from the measured g$\_$m/ characteristics, which is about 589cm$\^$2//V.s. The recrystallized SOI films are shown to be a good single crystal silicon.

  • This paper was designed to fabricate the miniature spur gear with pitch circle of 1.8 by hot extrusion process of mechanically alloyed Zn-22wt%Al powder at various temperature. The mechanical alloying was preformed for ball milled times of 8h, 16h and 32h by the planetary ball milling. Mechanically alloyed powders were compacted cylindrical performs. Extrusions of the miniature spur gear using the alloyed powder were carried out at different extrusion temperatures. The extruded spur gear was sintered for 2h at $350^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. The friction between the die and the powdered billet and the internally different density due to complex product shape cause the internal crack. To overcome the mentioned problems, high dimensional accuracy at cross section of the spur gear and uniform Vickers hardness could be obtained by graphite lubricant and controlling holding time.

  • The warping of unsymmetric laminated composites is induced by residual curing stress at the room temperature. Classical lamination theory (C.L.T.) predicts the room temperature shapes of all unsymmetric laminates to be a saddle. Experimental observations, however, indicate some unsymmetric laminated composites have cylindrical room temperature shapes. This anomalous behavior is explained by the extention of C.L.T. which involves Von Karman's large deflection theory. It is shown that, depending on the thickness, width, length, curing temperature and room temperature of the laminate, critical boundaries of the shape change are determined. Theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results of Toray Graphite/Epoxy {O$_{n}$/90$_{n}$}$_{T}$./....

  • We have modeled the observed spectral energy distributions(SEDs) of young stellar objects (YSOs) in giant molecular clouds (GMCs). We propose the theoretical modles for the dust envelopes around YSOs. The YSOs in a GMC may share the same initial chemical composition. In this paper, we compare the model SEDs with the observations of the YSOs. Dust shells of the YSOs are composed of a mixture of astronomical silicate and graphite grains. We propose the models for the evolution of the GMCs comparing the shape of the SEDs on the IRAS 2-color diagram with the age.

  • This study is aimed to investigate the effects of the multi-phase(ferrite-bainite-martensite) on the strengthening and toughening in ductile cast iron. All the specimen were austenitized at eutectoid transformation temperature range(${\alpha}+{\gamma}$) for 1hr and austempered at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ for various holding time, and then quenched in iced water for multi - phase (${\alpha}-B-M$). When the volume fraction of martensite is below 15%, excellent maximum fracture load can be obtained due to strengthening by the fine martensite, but, with increasing of volume fraction over 15%, it was decreased drastically. The martensite size became finer and the shape of it changed from bar to spherical type with increasing of austempering holding time. The higher the austenitizing temperature is, the more preferential is the formation of austenite phase around the graphite nodules improving strength and toughness of austempered ductile cast iron.
