  • Thermal conduction of the particulate composites or granular materials can be widely used in porous materials and geotechnical engineering. And it has continued to develop "effective thermal conductivity" of medium by modeling energy relationship among particles in medium. This study focuses on the development of the effective thermal conductivity at the unsaturated conditions of soils using the modified network model approach assisted by synthetic 3D random packed systems (DEM method, Discrete Element Method) at the particle scale. To verify the network model, three kinds of glass beads and the Jumunjin sand are used to obtain experimental values at various unsaturated conditions. The PPE (Pressure Plate Extractor) test is then performed to obtain SWCC (Soil-Water Characteristic Curve) of soil samples. In the modified network model, SWCC is used to adjust the equivalent radius of thermal cylinder at contact area between particles. And cutoff range parameter to define the effective zone is also adjusted according to the SWCC at given conditions. From a series of laboratory tests and the proposed network model, the modified network model which adopts a SWCC shows a good agreement in modeling thermal conductivity of granular soils at given conditions. And an empirical correlation between the fraction of the mean radius (${\chi}$) and thermal conductivity at given saturated condition is provided, which can be used to expect thermal conductivity of the granular soils, to estimate thermal conductivity of granular soils.

  • Granular compaction piles have the load bearing capacity of the soft ground increase and have the settlement of foundation built on the reinforced soil reduce. The granular compaction group piles also have the consolidation of the soft ground accelerate and have the liquefaction caused by earthquake prevent using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful methods in Korea. The Granular compaction piles are constructed by grouping it with a raft system. The confining pressure at the center of bulging failure depth is a major variable in relation to estimate for the ultimate bearing capacity of the granular compaction piles. Therefore, a share of loading is determined considering the effect of load concentration ratio between the granular compaction piles and surrounding soils, and varies the magnitude of the confining pressure. In this study, method for the determination of the ultimate bearing capacity is proposed to apply a change of the horizontal pressure considering bulging failure depth, surcharge and loaded area. Also, the ultimate bearing capacity of the granular compaction piles is evaluated on the basis of previous study on the estimation of the ultimate bearing capacity and compared with the results obtained from laboratory scale model tests. And using the result from laboratory model tests, it is studied increase effect of the bearing capacity on the granular compaction piles and variance of coefficient of consolidation for the ground.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the application effects of three different granular fused magnesium phosphate products on soybean in a volcanic ash upland soil(Namweon series) of Cheju island. They were two domestic products(Kyunggi Chemical Industrial Co., LTD, Pungnong Biryo Industrial Co., LTD) and an imported Chinese product that were manufactured from different added materials. A powder fused magnesium phosphate. a single superphosphate(water soluble phosphatic fertilizer) and a fused superphosphate(mixed water soluble phosphate and 2% citric acid soluble phosphate) were presented as check fertilizers. Yield of soybean was the highest in the Pungnong product of granular fused magnesium phosphate. the next was the Chinese product imported and the Kyunggi product was the lowest but there was no statistical significance among the three granular products of fused magnesium phosphate. There was no clear tendency between yield and yield components of soybean plant however, the effects on the number of mainstem nodes, number of branches nodes and number of pods per plant were observed in the increased yield treaments. Phosphate concentration in stems and pods of soybean plant at harvesting stage was higher than those in stems of soybean plant during growing period. Uptake amounts and recovery rates of phosphate in stems and pods of soybean plant at harvesting stage were similar with the yield increasing tendency on soybean. In the changes of soil pH at different periods, the application of phosphatic fertilizers was increased soil pH. Soil pH in Chinese product was higher than domestic products, but it was similar to single superphosphate. The available silicate concentrations of soil were higher in the plot of Pungnong product than Chinese product.

  • In order to analyse the strength problems for an unsaturated soil, it is required to examine closely the characteristics of the parameters of shear strength which was changed with the metric suction and void ratio. To this ends, a triaxial compression test was conducted on the three samples-granular soil, cohesive soil and silty soil. The specimen was made by pressing the static pressure on the mold filled soil and was controled the void ratio with the different compaction ratio. And the test was performed by using the modified apparatus of the triaxial compression tester. The range of matric suction was 0-90 kPa.The measured results for the deviator stress and parameters of shear strength were analysed with the void ratio and the compaction ratio, and they were examined closely the characteristics of the strength for an unsaturated soil.

  • Granular compaction piles increase the load bearing capacity of the soft ground and reduce the settlement of fecundation built on the reinforced soil. Also the granular compaction piles accelerate the consolidation of soft ground using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful methods in Korea. In the present study, the estimation procedure for the ultimate bearing capacity of randomly installed granular compaction pile group is proposed. Also, carbon rod tests have been peformed for verifying the group effect of granular compaction piles and the behavior characteristics such as bulging failure zone on granular compaction piles. From the test results, it is found that bulging failure shape of granular compaction piles was conical shape and the ultimate bearing capacity increased as the spacing of piles became gradually narrow. Also, from the proposed method in this study, the optimal locations of granular compaction piles with various installed cases are analyzed. The results were shown that the bearing capacity was increased in the case concentrated on the central part of pile group.

  • Phenanthrene uptake by surfactant sorbed on activated carbon was investigated to recycle of surfactant in washed solution for contaminated soil. The partitioning of phenanthrene to the activated carbon coating with Triton X-100 as a surfactant was also evaluated by a mathematical model. Phenanthrene-contaminated soil (200 mg/kg) was washed in 10 g/L of surfactant solution. Washed phenanthrene in solution was separated by various particle loadings of granular activated carbon through a mode of selective adsorption. Removal of phenanthrene was 99.3%, and surfactant recovery was 88.9% by 2.5 g/L of granular activated carbon, respectively. Phenanthrene uptake by activated carbon was greater than that of phenanthrene calculated by a standard model for a system with one partitioning component. This is accounted for enhanced surface solubilization by hemi-micelles adsorbed onto granular activated carbon. The effectiveness factor is greater than 1 and molar ratio of solubilization to sorbed surfactant is higher than that of liquid surfactant. Results suggest that separation of contaminants and surfactants by activated carbon through washing process in soil is much effective than that of calculated in a theoretical model.

  • The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of pervious pavements on reducing the surface runoff caused by rainfall. The surface runoff from twelve steel experimental beds with different pavement had been recorded every minute from May to September 2008, by the measuring system of tipping buckets(0.1mm/count) and data aquisition systems(National Instrument's Labview and DAQ boards & Autonics PR12-4). The dimension of the experimental bed was $1.5m(W){\times}2.0m(L){\times}0.6m(D)$ and eleven different kinds of vegetational(grass, grass+cubic stone, grass+hole brick), modular(brick, cubic stone, small cubic stone, wood block, interlocking block, clay brick, granular clay brick) and granular(naked soil, gravel) paving materials and concrete were applied for the comparison. Six rain events with depth over 30mm were selected and compared. The maximum depth of the rainfall selected was 137.5mm for 28 hours, and the minimum 30mm for 5 hours. The maximum rainfall per hour was 23mm/hr and the minimum 11.4mm/hr. The major findings were as follows; 1. All pervious pavement applied reduced over 75% of the surface runoff compared with concrete pavement. The grassy and porous pavements were relatively efficient in reducing surface runoff. 2. The grass was the more efficient as intercepting average 69.5mm of initial surface runoff, and maximum 77.8mm at the condition of 13.5mm/hr rainfall. The next was gravel intercepting maximum 65.5mm at the condition of 13.5mm/hr and the 40.9mm at 19.1mm/hr, average 55.7mm. 3. The modular pavements common in urban area were not good in intercepting the runoff except the 'clay granular brick' compared with others. The 'clay granular brick' showed relatively efficient intercepting average 14.1mm, which was the bigger amount than the 'grass+hole brick'. 4. The 'naked soil' were more effective than the 'concrete', 'brick', and 'interlocking block' in reducing the surface runoff, but less efficient than other materials. The capacity of the 'naked soil' to intercept the initial rainfall was similar to the 'brick'. As summary, the more grassy and porous pavement shows more effective in reducing surface runoffs.
