Purpose: This study aimed to identify the pathogens of bloodstream infection in children with underlying hemato-oncologic diseases, analyze susceptibility patterns, compare temporal trends with those of previous studies, and assess empirical antimicrobial therapy. Methods: Retrospective review study of children bacteremia in hemato-oncologic diseases was conducted at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital from January 2013 to July 2023. Results: Overall, 98 episodes of bacteremia were observed in 74 patients. Among pathogens isolated, 57.1% (n=56) were Gram-positive bacteria, 38.8% (n=38) were Gram-negative bacteria, and 4.1% (n=4) were Candida spp. The most common Gram-positive bacteria were coagulase-negative staphylococci (n=21, 21.4%) and Staphylococcus aureus, (n=14, 14.3%) whereas the most common Gram-negative bacteria were Klebsiella pneumoniae (n=16, 16.3%) and Escherichia coli (n=10, 10.2%). The susceptibility of Gram-positive bacteria to penicillin, oxacillin, and vancomycin was 11.5%, 32.7%, and 94.2%, respectively and the susceptibility of Gram-negative bacteria to cefotaxime, piperacillin/tazobactam, imipenem, gentamicin, and amikacin was 68.6%, 80%, 97.1%, 82.9%, and 91.4%, respectively. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus was detected in 1 strain and among Gram-negative strains, extended spectrum β-lactamase accounted for 28.9% (12/38). When analyzing the antibiotic susceptibility and empirical antibiotics, the mismatch rate was 25.5% (n=25). The mortality rate of children within 30 days of bacteremia was 7.1% (n=7). Conclusions: Empirical antibiotic therapy for bacteremia in children with hemato-oncologic diseases should be based on the local antibiogram in each institution and continuous monitoring is necessary.

The 70% ethanol extract from cactus Chounnyouncho (Opuntia humifusa) was fractionated subsequently by hexan, chloroform, ethyl acetate, buthanol and water. The ethyl acetate fraction exhibited strong antimicrobial activities by paper disk diffusion method on the five strains of food born bacteria Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Pseudomonas fluorescens. It has a heat resistance to show inhibitory effect after heat treatment at 11$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. The ethyl acetate fraction showed almost perfect growth inhibition at over 700 ppm on the tested strains.
Recently, the prevalence of 16S rRNA methylase conferring high-level resistance to aminoglycosides has been increasing in Gram-negative bacilli globally. We determined the prevalence and genotype of these methylase-producing bacteria, and characterized the co-resistance to ${\beta}$-lactam antibiotics and quinolone in Gram-negative clinical isolates collected in 2010 at a hospital in Korea. Among 65 amikacin-resistant isolates screened from 864 Gram-negative bacilli (GNB), 16S rRNA methylase genes were detected from 49 isolates, including Acinetobacter baumannii (43), Klebsiella pneumoniae (2), Proteus mirabilis (2) and Serratia marcescens (1), Empedobacter brevis (1). All of the 16S rRNA methylase genotype was armA and no variant sequences of amplified PCR products for armA were noted. The 16S rRNA methylase producing bacteria showed much higher resistance to aminoglycoside for Enterobacteriaceae and glucose non-fermenting (NF)-GNB and to imipenem for glucose NF-GNB, than the non-producing isolates. All of the 16S rRNA methylase producing Enterobacteriaceae had the extended-spectrum-${\beta}$-lactamase. In addition, two K. pneumoniae concurrently produced both plasmid-mediated AmpC ${\beta}$-lactamase and qnrB gene. All of the amikacin-resistant A. baumannii (43) co-harbored armA 16S rRNA methylase and $bla_{OXA-23}$ carbapenemase. In conclusion, 16S rRNA methylase producing bacteria were very prevalent among GNB in South Korea, and were commonly associated with co-resistance, including carbapenem and quinolone.
Bacteria have been regarded as major etiolgic factors in root canal infections. Infected root canal flora from thirteen patients who had visited to conservative department of Wonkwang dental hospital were cultured on blood agar plates. Cultued microorganisms were isolated and identified with Gram stain and biochemical tests using Vitek Systems(BioMeriux, MO, USA); Antibiotic susceptibillity was performed with disk diffusion and broth microdilution using Vitek Systems. Gram positive cocci(65 %) were predominant, which were composed of 6 Streptococcus viridans group, 5 Staph. spp., and 4 Enterococcus faecium, in the isolatd 23 strains. Gram negative rods (26 %) were the next common bacteria, which were composed of 5 non - fermentative Gram negative rods, and 1 Enterobacter cloacae. Most strains of S. viridans group and E. faecium were susceptible to antibiotics including penicillin. But strains of Staphylococcus spp. and non - fermentative Gram negative rods showed marked resistance to antibiotics except tetrancyclin and cefotaxime. Most results between disk diffusion and microdilution were all agreed, but the results of non - fermentative Gram negative rods were susceptible to cefotaxime in disk diffusion method but resistant in microdilution.

CFC-222 is a novel fluoroqinolone antibacterial agent synthesized and under development by the Cheil Jedang Corporation, Korea. CFC-222 exerts the antibacterial activity by inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase leading to bactericidal action. In in vitro and in vivo preclinical testing, CFC-222 has been shown to possess a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity. In particular CFC-222 is very potent against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus spp., Streptocuccus spp. (in particular penicillin G-resistant and -susceptible S. pneumoniae) and Enterococcus spp. when compared to other quinolones (ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin or lomefloxacin). CFC-222 also showed potent activity against the methicillin resistant clinical isolates of S. aureus (MRSA). Against Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, Pseudomonas and Sarcina) the activity of CFC-222 was slightly weaker than that of ciprofloxacin, but was more potent than that of ofloxacin or lomefloxacin. In urinary systemic infections caused by both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, CFC-222 demonstrated a potent therapeutic efficacy in particular against Cram-positive bacteria S. aureus, S. pyrogen 203 and S. pneumonia TypeIII.
Disposable contact lenses, which are one type of soft contact lenses, provide convenience in use, but also cause various ocular infectious diseases. Microorganisms that cause eye diseases include Acanthamoeba, bacteria, Fungi, and so on. It is impossible to prevent microorganism contamination completely due to the use of hands as wearing contact lenses. The contamination by various microorganisms leads to infectious keratitis, but it is not well known for the exact microorganisms that affect the disease. For this reason, to identify the microorganisms, two groups that are commonly used for disinfection of lenses were divided: normal saline solution and multiple purpose solution. Using these solutions the degree of microorganism contamination was observed according to the days of 1, 3, 5, 10, and 15. Twenty students by two groups from Ophthalmic Optics department at D college in Daegu Metropolitan city participated in the experiment after their ocular health conditions were checked. During they wore one-day disposable lenses for 1, 3, 5, 10, and 15 days, bacteria were cultured in media. The results, which were Gram stained by selecting the cultured colonies, show as followings: Gram positive cocci 33%, Gram-negative cocci 2%, Gram positive bacilli 34%, and the Gram negative bacilli 31%, respectively. As for the identification of potential pathogens, VITEK system and API kit methods were used. Keratitis caused by bacteria known as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa were detected as a result of wearing contact lenses. This study examined the distribution of bacteria as wearing one-day disposable contact lenses and pathogenic bacteria according to the duration of wearing them. In conclusion, the importance of hygiene when using contact lenses is suggested.
A pre-treatment process has been developed for natural dyeing of wool by which the dyed materials have been imparted antimicrobial efficacy against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria durable up to 20 washes. In this process, wool fabrics were treated with citric acid under oxidizing condition prior to dyeing. The treated fabrics were then dyed with four different types of natural dye powders obtained from leaves of silver oak, wattle, tanner's senna and flame of forest. All the natural dyes produced yellowish brown colour on wool fabrics. The washing and light fastness properties of the fabrics subjected to pre-treatment were one grade higher compared to those of the dyed fabrics without pre-treatment. The pre-treated wool fabrics showed antimicrobial efficacy against both gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli). The fabrics dyed without pre-treatment showed antimicrobial efficacy against gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) only. The durability of antimicrobial efficacy was higher in pre-treated and dyed wool fabrics compared to the dyed fabrics without pre-treatment.
1. Of the 32 extracts from Genus of lishenes broth tested for antimicrobial activity, 28 inhibited at least one of the 3 test microorganisms used. 2. Twenty seven lichnes broth from 32 species tested were active against at least one of the Gram-positive bacteria M. pyogenes var, aureus 203 p, and twenty four lichenes broth from 32 Species tested were active against at least one of the Gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633. 3 Twenty five lichenes broth from 32 species tested were active against at least one of the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli 0.126. 4. The antibiotic substances in lichenes were readily extracted by organic solvents.
The seasonal changes were evaluated in the soil microbial populations by selected media in an organic farming system (OFS) with no-till management compared to those in a conventional farming system (CFS) with tillage and synthetic amendments in a flooded paddy from 2009 to 2010. The populations of aerobic bacteria and fungi in the OFS were significantly higher than those in the CFS at the harvesting stages, whereas those of Gram-negative bacteria was significantly higher in the OFS than in the CFS before the submerging stages. In addition, populations of aerobic bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi tended to rapidly decreased after the submerging stages may be due to insufficient oxygen. Gram-negative bacteria should be considered as potential factor responsible for the microbial population differentiation observed between the OFS and the CFS in flooded paddy fields.
The 23 representative bacteria were studied for the glucosamine contents which represent the glycolipid content of the cell wall. The distribution of glycolipid in various bacteria was examined and the relationship between the glycolipid contents and the Gram stain was elucidated. The results were as follows: 1. The contents of glucosamine in the glycolipid of Gram negative and variable bacterial cell wall were large ranging from the least 0.04 ${\mu}g$ of Proteus vulgaris to the largest 2.48 ${\mu}g$ of Aerobacter aerogenes. The Gram positive bacteria and only those Gram positive among Bacilli contained less than 0.02 ${\mu}g$ of glucosamine contents. The least glucosamine containing Gram positive bacteria were Corynebacterium sepedonicum and Staphylococcus aureus. It could generally be said that the Gram negative and variable bacteria contain the higher content of glucosamine in the cell wall than the positives. 2. The bacteria were better stained by the Gram solution after the extraction of glycolipid from the cell wall than those without extraction. 3. The four infrared spectra of glycolipids obtained from Aerobacter aerogenes, Bacillus circulans, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Salmonella typhirurium showed all the similar characteristics. All showed the existence of groups; OH, C-O, C-O-C, $CH_2+CH_3$, amide band, fatty acid ester band and ester carbonyl bond.
