Properties of sliding materials are dependent on the lithology because debris is the product of rock weathering processes. In order to characterize transportation behavior of debris dependent of debris types, this study selected 26 debris flows over three areas composed with different rock weathering types and topographic conditions. Analyses of lithology, weathering, and topographic characteristics were performed by detailed field survey. Based on the field survey data, transportation behavior of debris was studied at the aspect of the relationship of grain size and volume of debris as well as topographic conditions. According to the study results, change of slope angle is very influential factor on runout distance of debris among the topographic factors. Because the sliding velocity and the energy of debris are frequently changed and more irregular on an undulating slope, the unout distance of debris is larger than that of an uniformly dipping slope. Runout distance of debris is also influenced by volume and grain size of debris. Volume of debris in the gabbro is four or five times larger than that of the granite area because it is controlled by the lithology. Considered with grain size distribution, runout distance of debris is longer in the gabbro area which is composed with irregular grain size bearing large corestones than that in the medium grained granite area.
We investigated flux, grain size distribution, Nd-Sr isotope composition, mineral composition, and trace metal composition (REEs and Sc) of inorganic silicate fraction (ISF, mainly Asian dust with an unrestricted amount of volcanic materials) deposited during 600~1000 ka across the Mid-Pleistocene Transition at core NPGP 1401-2A (32°01'N, 178°59'E, 5205m) taken from the central part of the North Pacific. Our results reveal about a 2-fold increase in ISF flux after 800 ka, which is associated with an increase in La/Sc and a decrease in mean grain size. Asian dusts are finer than volcanic materials and La/Sc increases with the enhanced contribution of Asian dusts. Thus, increased flux after 800 ka can be explained by the increased contribution of Asian dusts relative to volcanic materials, likely due to an intensified Westerly Jet (WJ) and the drying of the Asian continent after the MPT. Mean grain size of ISF varies systematically in relation to glacial-interglacial cycles with a decrease during glacial stages, which is consistent with the previous results in the study area. Such a cyclical pattern is also attributed to the increase in the relative contribution of Asian dusts over volcanic components in glacial stages due to intensified WJ and drying of the Asian continent. Thus, it can be concluded that climate changes that had occurred across the MPT were similar to those of interglacial to glacial transitions at least in terms of the dust budget. Different from the Shatsky Rise, however, compositional changes associated with glacial-interglacial mean grain size fluctuations are not observed in Nd-Sr isotope ratios and trace element composition in our study of the Hess Rise. This may be attributed to the location of the study site far (> 4,000 km) from the volcanic sources. The volcanic component at the study site comprises less than 10% and varies within 3% over glacial-interglacial cycles. Such a small variation was not enough to imprint geochemical signals.
To clarify the effect of temperature during ripening on grain quality, rice plant which was grown under normal natural conditions untill heading stage was subjected various temperature regimes during grain filling stage. Three varieties, Odaebyeo, Hwaseongbyeo and Dongjinbyeo were used. Grains on primary and secondary-rachis branches were harvested seperately and measured specific gravity, grain size and weight. The optimum daily temperature for grain filling of rice during ripening period was about 22$^{\circ}C$ and grain filling under alternating temperature(26/18$^{\circ}C$, day /night) was better than constant temperature (22 /22$^{\circ}C$) based on 1, 000-grain weight and yield. Grain size based on volume per grain was smallest under the constant temperature of 22 /22$^{\circ}C$. The size of secondary-rachis branches was smaller than primary-rachis branch. The difference in size between primary and secondary-rachis branches was biggest in Hwaseongbyeo, followed by Odaebyeo and Dongjinbyeo. The temperature regimes treated did not influence the grain size difference between branches so much. The 1000-grain weight was lighter under high temperature than low temperature in Odaebyeo, but reversed tendency was observed in Dongjinbyeo of secondary rachis-branches.

In all conventional sintered PM products, the pores present are of two types, primary and secondary. Primary pores forming during compaction and latter during sintering, due to penetration of formed liquid through the matrix grain boundary. Effect of carbon addition on diffusion of Cu in SH737-2Cu system was investigated. After compaction and transient liquid phase sintering at $1120^{\circ}C$ and $1180^{\circ}C$, samples were characterized for densification, showing rise in sintering density and reduction in swelling on carbon addition. Quantitative microstructural characterization (shape factor and pore size) revealed bimodal distribution for 0% carbon, more rounded pores for 0.9% carbon and higher sintering temperature, and pore coarsening at higher sintering temperature.

In this Part 2, the grain growth processes of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics is numerically simulated using Monte Carlo method (MCM) and finite element method (FEM) and the pore sizes are analyzed. As the green ceramics whose thermal conductivities in high temperatures are generally low are sintered by the plasma heat and are rapidly cooled, the grain growth of the sintered body in the center is different from that in the outer. Also, even in the same sintering temperature, the pore size differs according to the pressing pressure. In order to prove the difference, the temperature distribution of the sintered body was analyzed using the finite element method and then the grain growth process associated with pressing pressures and relative densities was simulated using Monte Carlo method.

Characteristics of high density U-Mo alloy powder prepared by centrifugal atomization have been examined. The results indicate that the majority of the atomized U-Mo alloy particles has a smooth surface and frequently near-perfect spheroidal shape with few satellites attached. The size distribution of atomized U-Mo alloy powder shows the mono-modal size distribution seen in ligament disintegration mechanism. All phases of atomized alloy powder below 150$\mu\textrm{m}$ irrespectively to particle size are found to be ${\gamma}$-U (cubic structure) phases with isotropic structure and not to be U$_2$Mo phase at all. The microstructure of atomized U-Mo alloy particulates has micro-crystalline structure with non-dendritic gram supersaturated with Mo element. Also the grain size of ${\gamma}$ -U tends to decrease with the decrease of the powder diameter.
Sintering and microstructure of Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composite with $\alpha$-Al2O3 matrix containing dispersed 5~50 vol% ZrO2 were discussed. Sintered density was increased with elevating forming pressure in range of 6~300 MPa and about >99.2% of theoretical density was obtained at 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 2h in case of 300 MPa of 6~300 MPa uniaxially cold-pressed compacts containing 20 vol% ZrO2. All kinds of different batch composition exhibited nearly the same shrinkage behaviour with end-point shrinkage between 20 and 24%, and had the maximum shrinkage rate (0.41~0.54%/min) around 140$0^{\circ}C$. Grain growth was occurred faster in $\alpha$-Al2O3 than in {{{{ gamma }}-Al2O3 starting matrix during sintering at 1$600^{\circ}C$. Bimodal pore size distribution of interaglomerate pores with size of 0.03~0.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and of interaglomerate pores with size of around 60 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was obtained in Ce-TZP/$\alpha$-Al2O3 composite sintered at 130$0^{\circ}C$. But unimodal pore size distribution with around 0.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was observed in Ce-TZP/{{{{ gamma }}-Al2O3 composite sintered at the same temperature. Microcracks were occurred due to the tlongrightarrowm transformation of ZrO2 on cooling process.
The principal objective of this study is to deepen the characterization studies already led on sand concretes in previous works. Indeed, it consists in studying the effect of the sand type on the main properties of sand concrete: fracture and mechanical properties. We particularly insist on the determination of the fracture characteristics of this material which apparently have not been studied. To carry out this study, four different types of sand have been used: dune sand (DS), river sand (RS), crushed sand (CS) and river-dune sand (RDS). These sands differ in mineralogical nature, grain shape, angularity, particle size, proportion of fine elements, etc. The obtained results show that the particle size distribution of sand has marked its influence in all the studied properties of sand concrete since the sand having the highest diameter and the best particle size distribution has given the best fracture and mechanical properties. The grain shape, the angularity and the nature of sand have also marked their influence: thanks to its angularity and its limestone nature, crushed sand yielded good results compared to river and dune sands which are characterized by rounded shape and siliceous nature. Finally, it should further be noted that the sand concrete presents values of fracture and mechanical properties slightly lower than those of ordinary concrete. Compared to mortar, although the mechanical strength is lower, the fracture parameters are almost comparable. In all cases, the sand grains are debonded from the paste cement during the fracture which means that the crack goes through the paste-aggregate interface.

Heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb) were determined in ninety-one surface sediments collected from Kwangyang Bay, south coast of Korea. The data show that the Fe, Cr, Ni, and Zn distribution in the bay can be described by metal vs. grain size relationship. However, the distribution pattern of Mn, Co, Cu and Pb were found to be changed because they are anthropogenically enriched to sediment. Correlation matrix and R-mode factor analyses revealed that two important factors controlling the distribution of metals in the bay are grain size and anthropogenic input.

We examined the microfabrics of omphacite and garnet in foliated eclogite to determine the influence of the layered structure on seismic observations in subduction zone. The analyzed eclogite, from the Lanterman Range, northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, is characterized by layering in which the modal abundances of garnet and omphacite vary. For garnet, the low aspect ratios, similar angular distribution of long axes relative to the foliation in both layers, uniform grain size distribution, near-random crystallographic preferred orientations (CPOs), and misorientation angle distributions are indicative of passive behavior during deformation. In contrast, omphacite shows relatively high aspect ratios, a low angle between the long axes of crystals and the foliation, a wide grain-size distribution, and distinctive CPOs, suggesting dislocation creep as the main deformation mechanism. The results of fabric analyses are consistent with strain localization into omphacite or omphacite-rich layers rather than garnet or garnet-rich layers. The single-crystal seismic anisotropy of garnet is very weak ($AV_P=0.2%$, $AV_S=0.5-0.6%$), whereas that of omphacite is much stronger ($AV_P=3.7-5.9%$ and $AV_S=2.9-3.8%$). Seismic anisotropy of the omphacite-rich layers shows an increase of 329% for $AV_P$ and 146% for $AV_S$ relative to the garnet-rich layers. Our results demonstrate the importance of the layered structure in strain localization and in the development of the seismic anisotropies of subducting oceanic crust.
