  • This study was carried out to select the acceptance test influenced by some quality characteristics of rice, and may provide the basic information on rice grade of appearance quality as distinguished the numerical values. Forty-four Japonica rice varieties mainly cultivated in Korea were evaluated for a consumer acceptance test. Color preferences of rice were highly correlated with appearance quality (r=-0.897**) and redness (r=-0.893**). Especially, appearance quality value resulted from interaction of $redness{\times}yellowness$ values was expected as a specific character used for grade of rice appearance. Shape preferences of rice showed the positive correlation with grain width (r=0.527**) and grain size (r=0.454**). Result of the consumer acceptance test of rice appearance conducted through a cluster analysis revealed five groups. Our study suggests that it may be feasible to be graded by average of quality character among groups, grain width, and grain size in Duncan's multiple range test.

  • The excessive and indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers in the past has brought serious soil and other environmental problems so alternatives over this agrochemical are being searched. Our study focuses on the effects of expanded rice hull inoculated with selected beneficial microorganisms on growth (through agronomic characters), yield and yield components, and grain quality indices of rice. Results showed that favorable effects of different expanded rice hull preparations were not readily apparent at vegetative stage and only treatments with supplemental chemical fertilizer application were comparable with the conventional practice. Expanded rice hull combined with 50% rate of chemical fertilizer exhibited a significantly higher yield (6,471 kg $ha^{-1}$) over conventional practice (5,719 kg $ha^{-1}$). Good milling quality indices were observed in treatments having 50% chemical fertilizers plus alternatives from expanded rice hull. Finally, we demonstrated that chemical fertilizer rate can potentially be reduced into 50% if combined with expanded rice hull, and show even better output than chemical fertilizer alone.

  • To evaluate performance of the experimental pick-up type pulse crop harvester for harvesting sprout bean, its pick-up and discharging grain loss ratios, grain quality such as whole grain ratio, damaged grain ratio, unthreshed grain, and foreign material ratio in grain tank, germination rate of threshed grain, and theoretical field capacity of the harvester were analyzed according to engine speeds of 2000, 2400 and 2800 rpm and harvesting speeds of 0.6, 1.0 and 1.4 m/s. It is considered that the harvester showed optimum performance at the engine speed of 2800 rpm and the harvesting speed of 1.0 m/s, and then average pick-up grain loss ratio of 2.7%, discharging grain loss ratio of 0.5%, whole grain ratio of 99.3%, damaged grain ratio of 0.2%, unthreshed grain ratio of 0.0%, foreign material ratio of 0.2%, and germination rate at 8 days after seeding of 72.8% were shown. It is considered that the harvester has lower grain loss and higher grain quality than the imported bean combines. And also as it could harvest 3 rows of cut and dried sprout bean crop width of which was about 2 m, its effective field capacity was estimated for about 50 a/h.

  • The color sorting technique utilizing the image processing method is very applicable tool to analyze motion of a free-falling object in many agricultural and industrial research fields. In the present study, we have developed an image processing system and algorithm to sort good quality rice grains effectively from the bad ones. The system employs a high speed rate line-scan CCD camera with 2K-pixels and worked with a high speed DSP and FPGA in-line. It can accumulate acquired line-scan image data and visualize each grain image clearly. As a result, we can easily calculate the number of pixels occupied by grain(=grain size), gray level and its correct position by visualizing grain images rapidly.

  • This investigation was undertaken to establish the technologies of grain refinement and modification, and to characterize material properties, essential for high quality aluminum alloy castings. Grain refinement seldom changed DAS and eutectic Si size, but largely decrease grain size. The variations of grain size induced by grain refinement had a great influence on the elongation without changes in the tensile strength or yield strength. The optimum Ti level lies between 0.1% and 0.16% to achieve the best possible mechanical properties. DAS and grain size were little affected, but eutectic Si size was greatly refined by modification. The variation of eutectic Si size had a great effect on the elongation, impact value, fracture toughness and fatigue crack propagation rate without changes in the tensile strength or yield strength. The Sr content of 0.015% is optimum to modification.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigatd the variation of some apearance chemical components at National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station in Korea. the treatements consisted of five transplating times, form May 5 to July 5 at 15-day interval , and six cultivars ; two early-maturing, two mid-maturing and two latematuring cultivars. The results showed that the variatio of grain appearance such as length-wide ratio was not significantly different in early -maturing cultivars, but mid-and late-maturing cultivars made slightly a round shape of grain in case of early transplanting. Percentage of complete grain was found to be high at transplanting of MAy 20 inearly-maturing cultivars and on June 5 in mid-and late-maturing ones. PERcentage of existed embryo after milling showed high at early transplanting of May 5 for early -maturing cultivars, and at the late transplanting of June 5 in early and late maturing one. The chemical components of rice grain showed high in protein , lipid, ash and amylose content inthe earlier transplanting, and also revealed high in carbohydrates, magnesium and potassium in the later transplanting of all cultivars.

  • The brown rice drying is effective for energy saving and cost reduction. However, deterioration after drying is one problem, because the skin damage occurs during the drying. So, the measures to preserve the quality has been investigated. One of major quality deteriorations is the oxidation of fat which is contained in the bran layer. So, milling should be carried out to remove the fat as soon as possible after brown rice drying. And the low temperature storage is also worth to be examined for prevention of oxidation. The effect of skin damage on the increase of fat oxidation was clarified. For the grain of skin damage, the increased of fatty acid vaule was remarkable after 70 days elapsed from occurrence of skin damage even in $15\;^{\circ}C$ condition. Therefore it is impossible to keep grain as brown rice form after brown rice drying. For the clean rice and excessively milled rice, the quality can be preserved even in high temperature of $30\;^{\circ}C$. Therefore the brown rice drying can b applied practically using the clean rice technique.

  • Dull grains segregated from F$_3$ and F$_4$ of the crosses between two dull mutants and a glutinous cultivar were compared with non-glutinous and glutinous segregants for their physicochemical properties. Amylose content of dull rice grain segregated from the dull/glutinous cross showed the intermediate value between glutinous and non-glutinous rice grain, whether it is controlled by the recessive or dominant gene. Alkali digestibility value (ADV) of dull rice grain was lower than that of glutinous or non-glutinous rice. A positive correlation was found between ADV and amylose content of homozygous non-glutinous or dull F$_4$ grains, but a negative relationship was observed in glutinous grains. Protein content of dull grain was significantly higher than that of glutinous or non-glutinous grain segregated from the same cross, while those of glutinous and non-glutinous grains were not different. Among gelatinization characteristics, initial pasting temperature and peak viscosity of dull grains were higher than glutinous rice, and were not different with non-glutinous grain. Hot, cool and consistency viscosities of dull grain were intermediate between glutinous and non-glutinous rices. Dull grains showed the highest breakdown viscosity and the lowest setback viscosity among the three endosperm types.

  • To evaluate the characters related to rice grain quality as affected by silicate application, the ripened color, appearence and physicochemical properties of rice grain which were produced at the silt-loam paddy field of National Yeongnam Agricultural Exeperiment Station with a little poor drainage for trials on long-term effects of continuous application of same fertilizer were analyzed comparing with the NPK fertilizer an the NPK+compost in 1995. The whiteness value and color space value in ripened color of rice hull by silicate application were higher than those in the plots of NPK and NPK+compost, because of low percentage of rusty grain and sooty grain, The percentage of perfect grain in brown rice and in milled rice by the silicate application increased by 6.1~7.5% and by 1.8~3.5% respectively, as compared with the NPK application and white core and white belly of milled rice were decreased, The amylose content, protein content and starch-iodine blue value of milled rice by silicate application were lower than those in the plots of NPK and NPK+compost, while the peak point and breakdown viscosity of gelatinized rice flour on amylograph, and tastes value evaluated as a indicater of pannel test by nireco tester were higher. By silicate application these factors could be affected toward better in eating quality.
