  • It was analyzed the causes of boiler tube rupture due to a degradation and corrosion on the boiler tubes in fossil power plant. The experiments were carried out among samples taken from the operating facilities. The result were analyzed based on experimental results from mechanical strength, microstructure observation, and hardness measurement in order to determine the cause of local rupture on boiler tubes. In general, 2.25Cr-1Mo steel generates carbides, it is coarsened, its ductility and strength abruptly decreased as degradation is in progress, In order to confirm this phenomenon, we observed changes of the mount of Cr and Mo of carbide by carrying out EDX chemical composition analysis. The amount of Cr and Mo in the degraded material or service exposed material gradually increased the amount of Mo but initially they were almost maintained at the same amount. Furthermore, we observed that the carbide become coarsened both in the grain and at the grain boundary. Tensile test was carried out to measure a material hardness and to recognize a drop-off of hardness. Overall result for tensile strength and hardness turned out to be lower than new material and mechanical strength and hardness was degraded as the material degradation was in progress.

  • Hydroxyapatite coatings were fabricated by a room temperature spray method on zirconia substrates and the influence of heat-treatment on their microstructure was also investigated. Phase composition of coated hydroxyapatite films was similar to the starting powder, but the grain size of hydroxyapatite particles was reduced to the size of nano-scale about 100 nm. Grain size, particle compactness, and adhesiveness to zirconia of hydroxyapatite coatings were increased with heat-treatment temperature, but some of cracks by heat-treatment above $1100^{\circ}C$ were initiated between hydroxyapatite coatings and zirconia substrate. Heat-treated hydroxyapatite layers show the dissolution in SBF solution for 5 days. Hydroxyapatite-coated specimen heat-treated at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 h has a good biocompatibility, which specimen induced the nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite precipitates on the coating surface by the immersion in SBF solution for 5 days.

  • Purpose: To improve the cooking quality of brown rice, newly inbred soft rice cultivars were investigated. Methods: The physicochemical properties of brown rice flour and water absorption patterns and cooking characteristics of brown rice grain were compared to Ilmi white and brown rice. Results: General composition and total dietary fiber contents of five rices were significantly different with higher ash, protein, and total dietary fiber contents in soft brown rice than white rice. The hardness of raw rice grain was higher in Ilmi brown rice than in soft brown rice. The water absorption increased rapidly in 30 min of white rice and in 4-6 h of brown rices. The apparent amylose content of soft brown rice was lower than that of Ilmi rice. The initial pasting temperature and all viscosities were significantly different, but the trend was not similar. The textural properties of hardness and roughness were higher, but adhesiveness, cohesiveness, and stickiness were lower in Ilmi brown rice than white and soft brown rices. In sensory preference test, not only textural properties, hardness, adhesiveness, cohesiveness, stickiness, and roughness, but also color, glossiness, and roasted flavor were higher in soft brown rices. Especially soft brown rice B showed the best cooking quality among all rices. Conclusion: The results of the study suggested that soft brown rice is developed for cooking with high nutritional and functional quality.

  • In this study, the variations of microstructures and tensile properties of Ti-(44-54)at.%Al binary alloys were investigated. The heat-treated microstructure depended greatly on their solidification structure and annealing temperature. We measured the variations of volume fractions of primary and secondary lamellar structure as a function of the heat treatment temperature in a Ti-47at.%Al alloy. The variation of ductility as a function of Al content was in good agreement with the change of fracture mode in the tensile fracture surface. It can be inferred that the variations of yield stress and hardness of ${\gamma}$ phase in a single ${\gamma}$-phase field region are enhanced by anti-site defects created by deviations from the stoichiometric composition. In a Ti-47at.%Al alloy within the (${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) two-phase field, the yield stress tended to be the maximum at a near equal volume fraction of lamellar and ${\gamma}$ grains. The ductility depended sensitively on the overall grain size and Al content. The calculation of fracture strain using Chan's model indicated that the change of ductility as a function of annealing temperature was primarily determined by the variations in the overall grain size and lamellar volume fraction.

  • Effect of Al2O3 addition on the mechanical properties and microstructure of Ce-TZP were studied. 12, 14, 16Ce-TZP containing 0-40wt% Al2O3 were prepared by sintering at 155$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h. in air. Density, linear shrinkage, bending strength, Vickers hardness, microstructuer and the amount of stress induced phase transformation were examined. Vickers hardness increased linearly with increasing amounts of Al2O3. The amount of transformation and fracture toughness decreased linearly with increasing amount of Al2O3. Linear shrinkage and relative density decreased with increasing Al2O3 content in all composition of Ce-TZP. Grain growth of Ce-TZP was inhibited by Al2O3 dispersion and fracture mode of Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composites transformed from intergranular to transgranular fracture as the amount of Al2O3 increased. TEM observation revealed that Al2O3 particles were located mainly at grain boundaries of ZrO2.

  • By using commercial zirconia powder CeO2-ZrO2 ceramics containing 8~16mol% CeO2 was made by heat treatment at 1350~155$0^{\circ}C$ for 1~10hr. The minimum amount of CeO2 for obtaining complete tetragonal phase was 12mol%, and in the tetragonal phase region fracture toughness of Ce-TZP was decreased with increasing CeO2 content and the maximum value was obtained when 12mol% CeO2 was added. The bending strength goes through maximum at 14mol% CeO2. Fracture mode of Ce-TZP transformed from intergranular to transgranular fracture with increasing CeO2 content, so the morphology of fracture surface of 16mol% Ce-TZP was wholly transgranular and this tendency was independent on grain size. The crystal structure of the 12mol% Ce-TZP was monoclinic with fringes along the grain boundaries which are lying in the particular plane from the TEM observation. The chemical composition of the sintered body was homogeneous as a whole and some amorphism or air pocket was observed at the triple junction.

  • Four SiC-Si$_3$N$_4$ceramic cutting tools with different composition have been fabricated by hot-pressing. Correlations among the annealing time, the corresponding microstructure and the mechanical properties of resulting ceramics have been investigated. The fracture toughness and the grain size of both SiC and Si$_3$N$_4$in SiC-Si$_3$N$_4$composites increased with the annealing time. 1\`he hardness of SiC-Si$_3$N$_4$composites was relatively independent of the grain size and the sintered density. These ceramic cutting tools were tested under various cutting conditions and compared with the commercial Si$_3$N$_4$ceramic cutting tools. The experimental results were compared in terms of tool life and cutting force. The performance of SiC-Si$_3$N$_4$ceramic cutting tool shows the possibility to be a new ceramic tool.

  • As a part of basic investigation to Fishery Purge Project for the Special Administrative in Chollanamdo Province, the sedimentary environmental characteristics of Yoja Bay at 15 stations were studied. The analysis was carried out in July, 1998, through studies of Loss On Ignition (LOI) by depth, Total Sulfide (T-5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentrations and Grain-size distribution. The LOI value was found to be 6.20-12.20% (mean of 8.89%), with the neighboring Sunhakri and Haksanri areas showing slightly higher values. These values were similar to the LOI values observed in the Hansan-Koje Bay and Jinju Bay areas on the southern coast of Korea. T-S and COD concentrations were found to be, respectively, 0.060-0.104 mg/gㆍd (mean of 0.052 mg/gㆍd) and 5.53-29.71 mg/gㆍd(mean of 13.24 mg/gㆍd), not exceeding eutrophication limits. T-S concentration was especially high at stations close to the central areas of the bay and inland areas, which caused by organic matter input from the nearby agricultural areas. COD concentration was very high at stations nearby the bay entrance and Doonbyungdo, but the mean value was lower than that of Hansan-Koje Bay. This leads us to believe that the level of pollution in Yoja Bay is not significant. The prevailing sediment composition was mud, consisting of 61.38% silt and 34.87% clay. • We investigated the effect of substrate on the properties of the Ni-Zn-Cu ferrite thin films deposited on SiO2 (1000∼3000${\AA}$) / Si (100) substrate at various conditions by rf magnetron sputtering. A disktype Ni-Zn-Cu ferrite sintered by conventional ceramic process and argon gas were used as a target and a sputtering gas, repectively. The compositions of the thin films measured by EPMA were similar to target composition (Fe: 65.8 at%, Ni: 12.7 at%, Cu: 6.7 at%, Zn: 14.8 at%) irrespective of substrate temperature. Amorphous thin films were deposited when substrate was not intentionally heated, but the films came to crystallize with increasing substrate temperature, and crystalline thin films were deposited at substrate temperature above 200$^{\circ}C$. Below 250$^{\circ}C$ saturation magnetization (Ms), remanence (Mr) and coercivity (Hc) of the ferrite thin film increased with the substrate temperature due to the increase of grain size and the improvement of crystallinity. And above 250$^{\circ}C$, Ms, Mr increased slightly, but Hc of the amorphous thin films increased due to crystallization, whereas that of the crystalline thin films decreased because of grain growth and stress release.

  • The Fe-Ni compact bodies were fabricated using Fe-Ni mixed powders with 50 nm in diameter by injection molding process. The relationship between microstructure and material properties was characterized with respect to the volume ratio of powder/binder and sintering temperature with SEM and TEM. In the compact body having the volume percent ratio of 45(Fe-Ni) : 55(binder), which was sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ the values of relative density and hardness were low about 97.7% and 277.1 Hv, respectively. Using the composition of 50(Fe Ni) : 50(binder) and sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, the values of relative density and hardness were 98.5%, 294.4 Hv, respec-tively. The grain size of sintered bodies strongly depended on the sintering temperature. In both samples sintered at $600^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$, the average grain sizes were about 150 nm and 500 nm in diameter, respectively.
