  • This study presents an effective stiffness-based optimal technique to consider floor rigid diaphragm action and a technique to evaluate the structural behavior characteristics and efficiency for tall shear wall outrigger system subject to horizontal loads. To this end, isoparametric plane stress element with rotational stiffness is used for shear wall element and stiffness gradient is calculated. Also, the approximation concept to solve effectively the large scaled problems, member grouping technique and resizing technique are considered. To verify the effectiveness and usefulness of this technique, the efficient evaluation method for three types of 50 story model with core and outrigger system is presented.

  • This paper presents an approximate analysis of the serial production lines using decomposition technique. A serial production line consists of a series of unreliable machines separated by finite buffers. The serial production line is evaluated by approximation method, the results of which are compared with those examined by the discrete time event simulation, based on this approximation method, a gradient technique is proposed, which improves the efficiency of an operation of production line through the re-allocation of buffers.

  • In this paper an efficient algorithm for Pontriagin's maximum principle is developed. Fletcher-Powell method is adopted as optimization technique which shows fast and stable convergence characteristics. Terminal constraints are alse considered by using Hestens' algorithm and penalty function method together. Control variable inequality constraints are also considered by using Gradient Projection technique combined with Flectcher-Powell method. Test experiment shows good and reliable results.

  • This paper discusses the self-adaptive equalization technique which has adaptibility to channel characteristics varation without training sequence. The criterion function used in this paper is based on the concept of cumulant matching. This function can be applied to nonminimum phase channel, and we can verify the fact that if the constrained condition is satisfied. this criterion has no local optimum. As the adaption algorithm, the normalized gradient-searching technique is used. Simulations verify the performance of our method in case of 8PAM, 8PSK(CCITT V.27), 16QAM(CCITT V.29) sources and three type nonminimum phase channels.

  • In this paper, we construct extrapolated expanded mixed finite element approximations to approximate the scalar unknown, its gradient and its flux of semilinear Sobolev equations. To avoid the difficulty of solving the system of nonlinear equations, we use an extrapolated technique in our construction of the approximations. Some numerical examples are used to show the efficiency of our schemes.

  • The applicability of the two types of magnetic separation system, high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) and Magneto Archimedes method were studied considering the magnetic susceptibility of targeted substances. It was noted that the combination of the two methods can control the almost all the substances, paramagnetic and diamagnetic in addition to ferromagnetic substances. The principle of the methods was given and the conceput of the magnet force control technology is discussed. The practical applications of the technique were introduced together with the new application of HGMS.

  • Radio occultation (RO) technique has been used in planetary science since 1960s. When signal goes through atmosphere, it is refracted due to the gradient of atmospheric refractivity. In 1995, the first low earth orbit (LEO) satellite, MicroLab-1, was launched to conduct RO mission. It receives the signal from global positioning system (GPS) satellites. After MicroLab-1, other RO missions, such as CHAMP, SAC-C, and GRACE, are executed in several years later. In 2006, Taiwan launched six LEO satellites for RO mission. The mission name is Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC). Under some abnormal situations, multipath and strong fluctuation in phase and amplitude of the signal appear in moist troposphere. Therefore, open loop (OL) technique has been applied to replace traditional phase lock loop (PLL) technique. In this paper, we will summarize the retrieval processing procedure and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of OL technique.

  • In this paper, we proposed a post-processing technique for improving classification performance of electronic nose (E-Nose) system which may be occurred drift signals from sensor array. An adaptive radial basis function network using stochastic gradient (SG) and singular value decomposition (SVD) is applied to process signals from sensor array. Due to drift from sensor's aging and poisoning problems, the final classification results may be showed bias and fluctuations. The predicted classification results with drift are quantized to determine which identification level each class is on. To mitigate sharp fluctuations moving-averaging (MA) technique is applied to quantized identification results. Finally, quantization and some edge correction process are used to decide levels of the fluctuation-smoothed identification results. The proposed technique has been indicated that E-Nose system was shown correct odor identification results even if drift occurred in sensor array. It has been confirmed throughout the experimental works. The enhancements have produced a very robust odor identification capability which can compensate for decision errors induced from drift effects with sensor array in electronic nose system.
