This study was conducted to evaluate the one-year survival rate of patients with primary malignant central nervous system (CNS) tumors after surgical treatment in Kazakhstan. Retrospective data of patients undergoing operations in the Department of Central Nervous System Pathology in the JSC National Centre for Neurosurgery in the period from 2009 to 2011 were used as the research material. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed with the following information: gender, date of birth, place of residence, diagnosis according to ICD-10, the date of the operation, the morphological type of tumor, clinical stage, state at the end of the first year of observation, and the date of death. The study was approved by the ethical committee of the JSC National Centre for Neurosurgery. The overall one-year overall survival rate (n=152) was 56.5% (95% confidence interval (CI): 50.2-62.7), and 79.5% (95% CI 72.2-86.8) and 33.1% (95% CI: 21.0-42.3) for Grades I-II (n=76) and Grades III-IV (n=76), respectively. Significant prognostic factors which affected the survival rate were age and higher tumor grade (Grades III-IV), corresponding with results described elsewhere in the world.
Dyeing properties such as migration of disperse dye and color fastness of 4 types of the carrier[Carrier-I(methyl napthalene). Carrier-II(chloro benzene). Carrier-III(aromatic ether) and Carrier-IV(o-phenyl phenol)] were evaluated for the study. For the results, the optimum dyeing time and concentration of the carrier was 30min at $110^{\circ}C$ and 2g/l, respectively. The redyeing ratio of the fabric samples treated with Carrier-II and III was higher than that treated with Carrier-I and IV, thus, if was conclude that the redyeing ratio of the samples treated with Carrier-II and III was excellent. The light fastness of the samples treated with Carrier-III and IV was higher than that of Carrier-I and II in order of 2-4 grades. However, there were little changes in terms of washing and sublimation and rubbing fastness for the samples.
Purpose : The relationship between chest X-ray findings and respiratory indices, including the arterial-alveolar oxygen partial pressure ratio($a/APO_2$) and the ventilatory index(VI), indicators of the clinical respiratory status in neonates with respiratory distress syndrome(RDS), was examined in the present study. Methods : The records of 50 neonates, randomly chosen from 174 neonates treated with pulmonary surfactant(PS) in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Kyunghee University Hospital from 1996 to 2000 were analyzed retrospectively. Chest radiographs taken at the time after birth were classified into four groups according to Bomsel's classification. The $a/APO_2$ and VI values were calculated and compared with the corresponding chest radiographs. Results : Among the 50 cases of RDS examined, three cases were classified into grade I(6%), eight cases into grade II(16%), 20 cases into grade III(40%), and 19 cases into grade IV(38%). The mean $a/APO_2$ of the cases classified into grades I or II was 0.32 and the mean $a/APO_2$ of those classified into grades III and IV was 0.18 and 0.09, respectively. The mean VI was 0.049 for the cases classified into grades I or II and 0.076 and 0.161 for those classified into grades III and IV, respectively. Conclusion : The severity of RDS according to chest X-ray findings correlate to the values of respiratory indices, $a/APO_2$ and VI.
In order to establish the clinical significance of pubic bone uptake of radionuclide on $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ bone scintigraphs, we analyzed uptake patterns of normal adult pubic bone in 300 randomly sampled subjects. Bone scintigraphy was performed in each patient for the reasons other than pubic or pelvic problems. One-hundred-fifty-four were men and 146 women. The age ranged from 8 to 78 years. The pubic uptake was graded arbitrarily into 4 grades by comparing the pubic uptake density with that of L5 vertebra. Thus, grade I was defined as the L5 density greater than the pubic density, grade II as the L5 density equals to the pubic density, grade III as the L5 density less than the pubic cdensity, and grade IV as the L5 density much less than the pubic density. Statistical analysis revealed negative trend in the pubic uptake from grade IV to grade I with age. There was no sexual difference in the pubic uptake. The women in the 3rd and 4th decades disclosed higher pubic uptake (grades III, IV) probably due to pregnancy and labor.
Purpose: An animal model of pressure ulcers was experimentally-induced with the use of greater trochanter of rats. Methods: Twelve male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study and they were randomly divided into 4 groups: Group I (n=3, 120 mmHg, 2 hr), Group II (n=3, 120 mmHg, 3 hr), Group III (n=3, 140 mmHg, 3 hr) and Group IV (n=3, 140 mmHg, 4 hr). The rats were anesthetized with 100 mg/kg of ketamine. The pressure ulcers were induced by using a personally-designed pressing apparatus. After 5 days, the wounds were photographed and excised. Results: After 5 days of induced pressure ulcers, it was observed that Group I and Group II responded with Grade I and Grade II, respectively, while Group III and Group IV responded with Grade III. Conclusion: According to the result of this study, it can be concluded that the pressure ulcers were induced the characteristic grades of pressure ulcer classification by adjusting the degree and the duration of compression.
Background Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) is a benign disorder manifesting as yellowish cholesterol-laden plaques on the eyelids. This paper presents the outcomes in patients with XP who have undergone surgical excision as the main modality of treatment. Methods A retrospective review of patients who received surgery for xanthelasma palpebrarum from March 2007 to March 2011 was conducted. Patients were classified into four grades according to the location and extent of the lesion, with grade I being the mildest and grade IV being the most diffuse. Simple excision was performed in grade I and II lesions, while local flaps and skin grafts were performed in the more advanced grades. Results Ninety-five cases from March 2007 to March 2011 were included in this study. 66 cases (70%), were treated by simple excision. Twenty-four cases (25%) and 5 cases (5%) were treated by simple excision in combination with or without local flaps and skin grafts. In approximately 1/4 of the patients, orbicularis oris muscle involvement was observed. 4 patients (4.2%) developed scar contracture postoperatively, which required a secondary procedure. Recurrence was reported in 3 patients (3.1%). Otherwise. There were no other reports of major complications or disfigurement. Conclusions We found that for lesions involving the deep dermis and/or muscle, surgical excision was the most appropriate therapeutic option.
The main habitats of diving beetles in agricultural ecosystems were identified as ponds, irrigation channels, and reservoirs, where the water system is maintained throughout the year. Four species, Cybister japonicus, Cybister brevis, Hyphydrus japonicus and Noterus angustulus, were selected as biological indicators which can be used to evaluate the healthiness of the agricultural ecosystem. The species number of 4 indicator species, the species number of diving beetle species, and the diversity index were used as factors for environmental evaluation. The evaluation was classified into grades $I{\sim}IV$. The non-fertilizer and non-pesticide agricultural practicing area and the sustainable agricultural practicing area were evaluated as grades $I{\sim}II$, and the general agricultural area to be relatively fine with a grade II. However, the analysis indicated the agricultural areas near a residential area and an industrial complex to be poor with a grade of IV, suggesting that immediate improvement in the agricultural environment is needed.

Background Silicone implants are frequently used in augmentation rhinoplasty in Asians. A common complication of silicone augmentation rhinoplasty is capsular contracture. This is similar to the capsular contracture after augmentation mammoplasty, but a classification for secondary contracture after augmentation rhinoplasty with silicone implants has not yet been established, and treatment algorithms by grade or severity have yet to be developed. Methods Photographs of 695 patients who underwent augmentation rhinoplasty with a silicone implant from May 2001 to May 2015 were analyzed. The mean observation period was 11.4 months. Of the patients, 81 were male and 614 were female, with a mean age of 35.9 years. Grades were assigned according to postoperative appearance. Grade I was a natural appearance, as if an implant had not been inserted. Grade II was an unnatural lateral margin of the implant. Clearly identifiable implant deviation was classified as grade III, and short nose deformation was grade IV. Results Grade I outcomes were found in 498 patients (71.7%), grade II outcomes in 101 (14.5%), grade III outcomes in 75 (10.8%), and grade IV outcomes in 21 patients (3.0%). Revision surgery was indicated for the 13.8% of all patients who had grade III or IV outcomes. Conclusions It is important to clinically classify the deformations due to secondary contracture after surgery and to establish treatment algorithms to improve scientific communication among rhinoplasty surgeons. In this study, we suggest guidelines for the clinical classification of secondary capsular contracture after augmentation rhinoplasty, and also propose a treatment algorithm.
Values and attitude towards the environment begin to form in elementary school. Thus, environmental education is effective to promote children's sensibility on the environment, to increase their interest and concern on it, and to make them have friendly attitudes towards it. As a measure of such education, experiential learning activities are being emphasized, where children can see, feel and experience for themselves in a familiar environment surrounding them. Based on the results of this research, the following proposals can be made for environmental education necessary for elementary school children. i) the contents of environmental education should be selected and organized according to grades. Also, schedule should be secured to provide environmental education in certain time. ii) program should be developed to fit into local characteristics and academic level, providing connective and consistent environmental education. iii) activities for environmental education in elementary school can be effective only if connective guidances are provided among school, home and local community. iv) the recycling and separate collection activity program used in this research was limited to 3rd graders in small-size rural schools. Additional research may be necessary to see how long their attitudes last according to different grades.
This study was performed for developing the National Environmental Assessment Map (NEAM) in Korea and presenting the application method of NEAM. This NEAM adopted the least indicator method and uses a Geographic Information System (GIS). This map is made through evaluation of 67 items, including greenbelt status and biodiversity. As a result, the construction of NEAM was defined as a process of identifying land use to scientifically assess the physical and environmental value of land and classify conservation value into several grades for the sustainable management of environmental resources. After applying NEAM criteria of five degrees to the whole of Korea, Grade I, showing the highest conservation value, accounted for 45.6% by land area of NEAM. Grades II, III, IV, and Ⅴlikewise accounted for, respectively, 23.6%, 17.9%, 6.3%, and the lowest conservation value of 6.6%. This map can be widely used in, for example, urban and regional planning, development planning, and environment impact assessment.
