To investigate the reinforcing effects of functional fillers in nitrile rubber (NBR) materials, high-structure carbon black (HS45), coated calcium carbonate (C-CaCO3), silica (200MP), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as functional filler, and carbon black (SRF) as a common filler were used for oil-resistant rubber. The curing and mechanical properties of HS45-, 200MP-, and MWCNT-filled NBR compounds were improved compared to those of the SRF-filled NBR compound. The reinforcing effect also increased with a decrease in the particle size of the fillers. The C-CaCO3-filled NBR compound exhibited no reinforcing effect with increasing filler concentration because of their large primary particle size (2 ㎛). The reinforcing behavior based on 100% modulus of the functional filler based NBR compounds was compared by using several predictive equation models. The reinforcing behavior of the C-CaCO3-filled NBR compound was in accordance with the Smallwood-Einstein equation whereas the 200MP- and MWCNT-filled NBR compounds fitted well with the modified Guth-Gold (m-Guth-Gold) equation. The SRF- and HS45-filled NBR compounds exhibited reinforcing behavior in accordance with the Guth-Gold and m-Guth-Gold equations, respectively, at a low filler content. However, the values of reinforcement parameter (100Mf/100Mu) of the SRF- and HS45-filled NBR compounds were higher than those determined by the predictive equation model at a high filler content. Because the chains of SRF composed of spherical filler particles are similarly changed to rod-like filler particles embedded in a rubber matrix and the reinforcement parameter rapidly increased with a high content of HS45, the higher-structured filler. The reinforcing effectiveness of the functional fillers was numerically evaluated on the basis of the effectiveness index (SRF/f) determined by the ratio of the volume fraction of the functional filler (f) to that of the SRF filler (SRF) at three unit of reinforcing parameter (100Mf/100Mu). On the basis of their effectiveness index, MWCNT-, 200MP-, and HS45-filled compounds showed higher reinforcing effectiveness of 420%, 70%, and 20% than that of SRF-filled compound, respectively whereas C-CaCO3-filled compound exhibited lower reinforcing effectiveness of -50% than that of SRF-filled compound.

To enhance the grade and recovery rate of the gold/silver ores which yield at Philippine Mankayan mine, we studied the characteristics which are the geologic and mineralogical features of gold and silver ore, the liberation by crushing and grinding, the separation by sieving and shaking table. Gold/silver ore is composed of the sulfide minerals like pyrite, sphalerite, galena; and the gangue minerals which is quartz, clay. Gold/silver element are mainly contained in a sulfide minerals like pyrite, sphalerite and galena. To increase the liberation rate of sulfide minerals containing gold/silver element, the gold/silver ore has to be grounded under $100{\mu}m$ very finely because the crystal size of sulfide minerals is distributed from $1{\mu}m$ to $100{\mu}m$. The liberation rate of gold/silver ore increases to 92% when the particle size ($d_{90}$) of ore is grounded below $100{\mu}m$ by jaw crusher $\to$ cone crusher $\to$ rod mill by steps. The grade and recovery of sulfide minerals could not be enhanced by sieving separation because those crystal size is distributed homogeneously below $100{\mu}m$. But, when we separated the sieved ore using shaking table, the gold and silver grade increased to 40 ppm and 140 ppm, respectively. Then the recovery rate of gold reach almost 100% but that of silver is no more that 50%.

We report the catalytic activity of Au/$TiO_2$ and Pt/$TiO_2$ nanocatalysts under CO oxidation fabricated by arc plasma deposition (APD), which is a facile dry process with no organic materials involved. Using APD, the catalyst nanoparticles were well dispersed on $TiO_2$ powder with an average particle size (2~4 nm) well below that of nanoparticles prepared by the sol-gel method (10 nm). We found that the average particle size of the dispersed gold nanoparticles can be controlled by changing the plasma discharge voltage of APD. Accordingly, the amount of loaded gold on the $TiO_2$ powder increased with increasing discharge voltage, but the specific surface area of the Au/$TiO_2$ samples decreased. As for catalytic reactivity, Au/$TiO_2$ showed a higher catalytic activity than Pt/$TiO_2$ in CO oxidation. The catalytic activity of the Au/$TiO_2$ samples showed size dependence where higher catalytic activity occurred on smaller gold nanoparticles. The study suggests that APD is a simple way to fabricate catalytically active nanocatalysts.

Au fine particle dispersed TiO2 film was prepared on silica glass substrate by sol-gel dip and firing process. The films were fabricated from the system of titanium tetraisoproxie-EtOh-HCl_H2O-hydrogen tetrachloroaurate(III) tetrahydrate. The conditions for the formation of the clear solution and dissolving high concentration of Au compound were examined. And a photoreduction process was adopted to control the size of gold metal particles. Phase evolution of matrix TiO2 and variation of Au particle with UV irradiation were investigated by XRDA, SEM, TEM and UV-visible spectrophotometer. And the effect of CPCl(Cetylpyridinium chloride monohydrate) as a dispersion agent was evaluated.

Graphene, with its unique physical and structural properties, has recently become a proving ground for various physical phenomena, and is a promising candidate for a variety of electronic device and flexible display applications. Compared to indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, which have a typical sheet resistance of ${\sim}60{\Omega}$/sq and ~85% transmittance in the visible range, the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesized graphene electrodes have a higher transmittance in the visible to IR region and are more robust under bending. Nevertheless, the lowest sheet resistance of the currently available CVD graphene electrodes is higher than that of ITO. In this study, we report a creative strategy, irradiation of microwave at room temperature under vacuum, for obtaining size-homogeneous gold nano-particle doping on graphene. The gold nano-particlization promoted by microwave irradiation was investigated by transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy elemental mapping. These results clearly revealed that gold nanoparticle with ${\geq}30$ nm in mean size were decorated along the surface of the graphene after microwave irradiation. The fabrication high-performance transparent conducting film with optimized doping condition showed a sheet resistance of ${\geq}100{\Omega}$/sq. at ~90% transmittance. This approach advances the numerous applications of graphene films as transparent conducting electrodes.
Gold catalysts supported on metal-oxides were prepared by co-precipitation using the various metal nitrates and chloroauric acid as precursors, and effect of water addition on the catalytic activity in CO oxidation was investigated. Among the various supported gold catalysts, Au/$Co_{3}O_{4}$ and Au/ZnO catalysts showed the excellent activity for CO oxidation. Water in the reactant gas had a negative effect on the oxidation activity over Au/$Co_{3}O_{4}$ catalysts and a positive effect on that over Au/ZnO, which means the activity depends strongly on the nature of support. It was also confirmed that no significant change in the particle size of gold was observed after reaction both in dry and wet conditions. This fact suggested that the deactivated catalyst due to a carbonate species could be regenerated by water addition in the reactant gas.
This study investigated relationship between secondary electrons produced from single gold nanoparticle as a result of its interaction with radiation and particle size and incidence energy, provided basic data related to the dose enhancement effect based on gold nanoparticles. Monte Carlo simulation was applied by using MCNPX MC code, 50, 100, 150 kV and 6, 15 MV x-ray energy was used. In a water phantom, single gold nanoparticles that are 30, 50, 70, 90, and 110 nm in diameter were placed and the tally volume was designated at every 10 nm. Difference in electrons produced from gold nanoparticles was normalized based on absence of nanoparticle. When the X ray energy decreased and the diameter of gold particles increased, more electrons were produced. When the energy was lower, in the linear formula related to nanoparticle size and electron production, the gradient was higher. And, in comparison to the MV X-ray, at kV X-ray, significantly more electrons were produced. This study can be used as data to understand the dose enhancement effect based on gold nanoparticles, and further research related to various materials that dose enhancement including gold nanoparticles needs to be conducted.

In this study, a microchip system fabricated with MEMS technology was developed to detect bioelectrical signals. The developed microchip using the conductivity of gold nanoparticles could detect the biopotential with a high sensitivity. For designing the microchip, simulations were performed to understand the effects of the size and number of nanoparticles, and the sensing width between electrodes on the detection of biosignals. Then, a series of experiment was performed to validate the simulation results and understand the feasibility of the proposed microchip design. Both simulation and experimental results showed that as the sensing width between electrodes increased the conductivity decreased. Also, the conductivity increased as the density of gold nanoparticles increased. In addition, it was found that the conductivity that changes with the nanoparticles density could be approximated by a cumulative normal distribution function. The developed microchip system could effectively apply when a biosignals should be measured with a high sensitivity.
Antibodies were raised against fusion proteins of the N-terminus and a region containing the GDNQ (Gly-Asp-Asn-Gln) polymerase motif of the L (polymerase) protein of sonchus yellow net virus (SYNV). Immunoblot analyses using these antibodies revealed the presence of the L protein in purified SYNV preparations and in nuclear extracts from infected tobacco. The serological analyses and detection in a polyacrylamide gels suggested that the L protein is present in at least a 20 fold lower abundance than the G, N, M1 and M2 proteins, and has size corresponding to a molecular weight of over 200 kDa as predicted from nucleotide sequence data. Electron microscopy with gold-labelled antibodies was used to localize the N, M2, and G proteins of SYNV in thin sections of infected tissue. When sections of SYNV-infected tissue were treated with antisera against total SYNV proteins and N protein, gold label could be detected in both the viroplasms and in virus particles. With the anti-M2 protein antiserum, the gold label was strongly localized in the viroplasms but only limited labelling of the virus particle sonly. Limited labelling of the L protein was observed in the viroplasms and the virus particles, presumably because of the low abundance of L protein in the tissues.
