  • GIS can only be applied to certain areas by storing format. It is subordinate to a system when displaying geographic information data. It is therefore inevitable for GIS to use GML that supports efficient usage of various geographic information data and interoperability for integration and sharing. The paper constructs VisualGML that translates currently-used geographic information such as DXF (Drawing Exchange Format), DWG (DraWinG), or SHP (Shapefile) into GML format for visualization. VisualGML constructs an integrated map pre-process module, which filters geographic information data according to its tag and properties, to provide the flexibility of a mobile device. VisualGML also provides two major GIS services for the user and administrator. It can enable visualizing location search. This is applied with a 3-Layer POI structure for the user. It has trace monitoring visualization through moving information of mobile devices for the administrator.

  • Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) are digital charts encoded in S-57 format, which contain navigational informations such as coastlines, depth areas, and nautical marks. Although they have been successfully used for the safe navigation of ships, they have limited usages and applications because of their specialized data format and access systems. To cope with such drawbacks, S-57 ENCs need to be transformed into more generalized format such as Geography Markup Language (GML). The transformed GML ENCs can be kept in a database for efficiency, and can be accessed through Internet for usability. This paper proposes a new method for transforming and managing ENCs with XML database. S-57 ENCs are lust transformed into GML format, and then stored in a XML database. On the database, users can query for their needs. To validate the feasibility of the proposed method, we developed a protype system, and then conducted several test runs. The system can provide users with easy access to the marine information contained in ENCs. It also provides compatibility and efficiency by virtue of GML and XML database, respectively.

  • This paper refers and implements XML Web services, which supports networked interchanges of moving object information. XML Web services are expected to be fundamental building blocks in the move to distributed computing on the Internet. As an interchange format, GML encodes semantics, syntax, and schema of geospatial and geoprocessing-related information resources. It can give great benefits to utilize raw data easily as an XML encoding format does. This paper proposes a full coverage of interoperable location trajectory services consisting of 3 independent modules: a moving object database, a data processing server, and a web services interface module. For communications, SOAP protocols and WSDL documents are used, which can guarantee an interoperability of a system regardless of different platforms and service channels. This paper also designs a GML data format that represents location information of probe cars.

  • GIS became increasingly important in information-oriented society as social indirect capital and many GIS data are developed. To use these data effectively standard format that enables easy to transport and store is needed. For this purpose, OGC developed GML based on XML as web standard format of geographical information. In this study, web based mapping with respect to digital geologic map and gravity anomaly map was accomplished using GML. While, styling methods were implemented in XSLT to make the visualizing suitable for the character of each layer, so it is possible to make dynamic maps in the SVG. GML-base map produced in this study can be transferred and represented without loss of the meaning and degrading on the web.

  • This paper developed a web service system providing hydrographic information encoded by GML rules. In order to achieve the goal, every data included in an ENC, which is following the rules of the S-57 and S-52 from the IHO, is transformed into a data structure form of OLE/COM from the OOC. In the system, hydrographic information can be provided through a data provider, and then it can be encoded into GML format for web services. This paper also implemented a web client that requests hydrographic information to the server and renders result data which is a GML format following the rules of S-57.

  • The function of Aids to Navigation(AtoN) must be sustainable. In order to provide sustainable services, it is necessary to prevent repeated AtoN accidents through accurate data analysis and to perform maintenance to maintain functions. What is needed for this is the AtoN status statistics service. AtoN Status Statistics Service is a service that extracts existing data in gml format and extracts and processes it in the period, type, and format desired by the manager.

  • With the emerging mobile technologies, applications based on GIS are also getting more attention recently. But it is known to have some limitations in being served in different types of mobile devices and platforms. While information services are limited by data format and data exchange between platforms, the eXtensible Markup Language(XML) is getting focused as the most promising technology as the solution to such problems. Geographic Markup Language(GML) is based on XML technology and is being frequently mentioned recently as the solution to service problem on different mobile devices as well as the internet. In this study, we suggested the framework to use the GML in order to transfer and represent geographical data through the on-line or wireless platforms. We compared different application types which are currently used with GML and proposed to improve GIS services using the GML in geographical data transfer and description.

  • In this study, two standard specifications such as GML (Geography Markup Language) from OGC (Open Geo-spatial Consortium, Inc.) and X3D (extensible 3D) from Web3D consortium were dealt with for a web-based 3D urban application without using commercialized tools. In the first step of this study, DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and 3D GIS data sets were converted to GML structure with attribute schema. Then, these GML elements were projected onto a common coordinate system, and they were converted to the X3D format for visualization on web browser. In this work, a 3D urban data model, as a simple framework model, is extended to a framework model having further detailed information, depending upon application levels. Conclusively, this study is to demonstrate for practical uses of GML and X3D in 3D urban application and this approach can be applied to other application domains regarding system integrators and data sharing communities on distributed environments.

  • The OGC(OpenGIS Consortium), which is standardization organization of geographic data, have been studied standard for geographic data such as GML and GML based annotation for image and map. Annotation for map is applicable in various ways, understanding about geographic data, decision making and exchange of communication. For instance, Map annotation can be used for highlighting tour-course as symbols or explaining it as text on a map in tourism. This study suggests some annotation methodology for national digital map and presents a simple implementation of it. Firstly, this study suggests a way of updating OGC annotation schema which corresponds with DXF format and creating a GML application schema using the updated OGC annotation schema. Also it suggest a way of converting instance documents of annotated map to VML document with XSLT and VML for display. Later, it is needed to study for supporting another formats as well as DXF format. In addition, it is needed to study for managing the history of updated map entity with annotation in Local governments UIS(Urban Information System) in practical aspects.
