Studies of a number of Cu-Zr amorphous alloys have demonstrated that those exhibiting greater plastic strain during homogeneous deformation at room temperature show lower global plasticity associated with inhomogeneous deformation in a typical compression test. Using a combination of experiments and molecular dynamics simulations, we clarify this seeming paradox between the homogeneous and inhomogeneous deformation by exploring the microstructural aspects in view of the structural disordering, disorder-induced softening, and shear localization and relate these findings to the global plasticity of bulk amorphous alloys. Additional analyses were conducted to derive a simple structural parameter that allows the prediction of the global plasticity of bulk amorphous alloys.
In the present study, we developed a simple method to predict the neuronal cell death in the mouse hippocampus and striatum following transient global forebrain ischemia by evaluating both cerebral blood flow and the plasticity of the posterior communicating artery (PcomA). Male C57BL/6 mice were anesthetized with halothane and subjected to bilateral occlusion of the common carotid artery (BCCAO) for 30 min. The regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured by laser Doppler flowmetry. The plasticity of PcomA was visualized by intravascular perfusion of India ink solution. When animals had the residual cortical microperfusion less than 15% as well as the smaller PcomA whose diameter was less than one third compared with that of basilar artery, neuronal damage in the hippocampal subfields including CA1, CA2, and CA4, and in the striatum was consistently observed. Especially, when mice met these two criteria, marked neuronal damage was observed in CA2 subfield of the hippocampus. In contrast, after transient BCCAO, neuronal damage was consistently produced in the striatum, dependent more on the degree of rCBF reduction than on the plasticity of PcomA. The present study provided simple and highly reproducible criteria to induce the neuronal cell death in the vulnerable mice brain areas including the hippocampus and striatum after transient global forebrain ischemia.

The sheet perforated with a uniform triangular pattern of round holes and subjected to in-plane stress f arbitrary biaxiality was investigated. The equivalent continuum approach was employed to develop a theoretical model for global analysis, which includes defining a yield criterion and the strain hardening in terms of apparent stresses and apparent strains. Finit element analysis and experiment tension test were performed to examine the validity of proposed yield criterion and strain hardening models of perforated sheets.

Tracings streamlines in global coordinate, especially with finite element mesh, requires much computation due to C0 continuity of velocity field. In this study, a new approach is presented for the determination of streamlines from velocity field obtained by FE analysis. It is shown that amount of calculation can be drastically reduced and boundary of element can be easily treated. The approach is applied to the problem of free surface of deforming workpieces in shape rolling.

A combined experimental-computational study of a double edge-notched stone specimen subjected to tensile loading is presented. In the experimental part, the load-deformation response and the displacement field around the crack tip are recorded. An Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer (ESPI) is used to obtain the local displacement field. The experimental results are used to validate a numerical model for the description of fracture using finite elements. The numerical model uses displacement discontinuities to model cracks. At the discontinuity, a plasticity-based cohesive zone model is applied for monotonic loading and a combined damage-plasticity cohesive zone model is used for cyclic loading. Both local and global results from the numerical simulations are compared with experimental data. It is shown that local measurements add important information for the validation of the numerical model. Consequently, the numerical models are enhanced in order to correctly capture the experimentally observed behaviour.
The metal lead frame, a semiconductor component, has product tolerances in micro units as compared to products made with a larger size mold. Therefore, small deflections of the mold and of the press as well as the press molding process itself have a strong influence on accuracy of the product. Hence, it is necessary for the process design to consider the structural response of the mold and the press during deformation. In the current study, the mold deflection and pressure on the punch is examined using the finite element modeling (FEM) program ABAQUS. The results from the simulation were verified with the dynamic deformation measurement equipment using digital image correlation (DIC).

This paper presents the physical formulation of a 1D material model suitable for seismic applications. It is written within the framework of thermodynamics with internal variables that is, especially, very efficient for the phenomenological representation of material behaviors at macroscale: those of the representative elementary volume. The model can reproduce the main characteristics observed for concrete, that is nonsymetric loading rate-dependent (viscoelasticity) behavior with appearance of permanent deformations and local hysteresis (continuum plasticity), stiffness degradation (continuum damage), cracking due to displacement localization (discrete plasticity or damage). The parameters have a clear physical meaning and can thus be easily identified. Although this point is not detailed in the paper, this material model is developed to be implemented in a finite element computer program. Therefore, for the benefit of the robustness of the numerical implementation, (i) linear state equations (no local iteration required) are defined whenever possible and (ii) the conditions in which the presented model can enter the generalized standard materials class - whose elements benefit from good global and local stability properties - are clearly established. To illustrate the capabilities of this model - among them for Earthquake Engineering applications - results of some numerical applications are presented.

This paper proposes a robust method for the Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) fit to accurately estimate elastic-plastic J from engineering fracture mechanics analysis based on deformation plasticity. The proposal is based on engineering stress-strain data to determine the R-O parameters, instead of true stress-strain data. Moreover, for practical applications, the method is given not only for the case when full stress-strain data are available but also for the case when only yield and tensile strengths are available. Reliability of the proposed method for the R-O fit is validated against detailed 3-D Finite Element (FE) analyses for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under global bending using five different materials, three stainless steels and two ferritic steels. Taking the FE J results based on incremental plasticity using actual stress-strain data as reference, the FE J results based on deformation plasticity using various R-O fits are compared with reference J values. Comparisons show that the proposed R-O fit provides more accurate J values for all cases, compared to existing methods for the R-O fit. Advantages of the proposed R-O fit in practical applications are discussed, together with its accuracy.
