In this paper, a new efficient algorithm for global motion estimation is proposed. This algorithm uses a previous 4-parameter model based global motion estimation algorithm and M-estimator for improving the accuracy and robustness of the estimate. The first algorithm uses the block based motion vector fields and which generates a coarse global motion parameters. And second algorithm is M-estimator technique for getting precise global motion parameters. This technique does not increase the computational complexity significantly, while providing good results in terms of estimation accuracy. In this work, an initial estimation for the global motion parameters is obtained using simple 4-parameter global motion estimation approach. The parameters are then refined using M-estimator technique. This combined algorithm shows significant reduction in mean compensation error and shows performance improvement over simple 4-parameter global motion estimation approach.
In this paper, we propose a robust deinterlacing algorithm which combines edge dependent interpolation (EDI) and global motion compensation (GMC). Generally, EDI algorithm shows a visually better performance than any other deinterlacing algorithm using one field. However, due to the restriction of information in one field, a high duality progressive image from Interlaced sources cannot be acquired by intrafield methods. On the contrary, since algorithms based on motion compensation make use of not only spatial information but also temporal information, they yield better results than those of using one field. However, performance of algorithms based on motion compensation depends on the performance of motion estimation. Hence, the proposed algorithm makes use of mixing process of EDI and GMC. In order to obtain the best result, an adaptive thresholding algorithm for detecting the failure of GMC is proposed. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional approaches with respect to both objective and subjective criteria.

Background compensation plays an important role in detecting and isolating object motion in visual tracking. Here, we propose a Genetic Hough Transform, which combines the Hough Transform and Genetic Algorithm, as a method for eliminating background motion. Our method can handle cases in which the background may contain only a few, if any, feature points. These points can be used to estimate the motion between two successive frames. In addition to dealing with featureless backgrounds, our method can successfully handle motion blur. Experimental comparisons of the results obtained using the proposed method with other methods show that the proposed approach yields a satisfactory estimate of background motion.

Long-term global motion compensation (LT-GMC) was designed to compensate camera motion effectively. The LT-GMC warps a reference picture according to an estimated affine/homography model and stores it in its decoded picture buffer for long-term reference. Most previous works on LT-GMC have focused on improving quality of the warped picture, however, there has been only little consideration on the overhead of its motion coding. In this paper, we address this problem and propose a method, namely Scaling Predictor, to reduce the motion coding overhead for LT-GMC. Our experiment has shown BD-Rate reduction of 1.40% over conventional LT-GMC scheme by applying the proposed method.
In this paper, we propose a new deinterlacing algorithm based on motion estimation and compensation with variable block size. Motion compensated methods using a fixed block size tend to produce undesirable artifacts when there exist complicated motion and high frequency components. In the proposed algorithm, the initial block size of motion estimation is determined based on the existence of global motion. Then, the block is divided depending on block characteristics. Since motion compensated deinterlacing may not always provide satisfactory results, the proposed method also use an intrafield spatial deinterlacing. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides noticeable improvements compared to motion compensated deinterlacing with a fixed block size.

This paper suggests a motion compensation technique using GPS/IMU data in order to compensate for phase error caused by undesired motion of radar platform. An actual flight trajectory would be deviate from an ideal straight-constant trajectory with a constant velocity for SAR imaging, due to pitch, roll and yaw motion of aircraft caused by turbulence. This leads to blurred SAR images due to inter-pulse phase errors as well as along-track velocity errors. If the motion compensation is carried out to reduce those errors, SAR image quality can be significantly improved. Simulation results show that the motion compensation technique introduced in this paper is an effective tool to improve SAR image quality against severe motion of radar platform.

Change detection using difference picture has been used to detect the location of moving targets and to track them. This method needs the assumption of static camera, and the global motion compensation is required in case of a moving camera. This paper suggests a method for finding a minimum bounding rectangles(MBR) of moving targets in the image sequences using moving region detection, especially with a moving camera. If the global motion parameter is inaccurately estimated, the estimated locations of targets will be accurate either To alleviate this problem, we introduce the concept of the confidence measure and achieve more accurate estimation of global motion. Experimental results show that the proposed method successfully removes background region and extracts MBRs of the targets. Even with a moving camera, the new global motion estimation algorithm performs more precise]y and it reduces the background compensation errors of change detection.
Sports scene is characterized by large amount of global motion due to pan and zoom of camera motion, and includes many small objects moving independently. Some short period of sports games is thrilling to televiewers, and important to producers. At the same time that kinds of scenes exhibit exceptionally dynamic motions and it is very difficult to analyze the motions with conventional algorithms. In this thesis, several algorithms are proposed for global motion analysis on these dynamic scenes. It is shown that proposed algorithms worked well for motion compensation and panorama synthesis. When cascading the inter frame motions, accumulated errors are unavoidable. In order to minimize these errors, interpolation method of motion vectors is introduced. Affined transform or perspective projection transform is regarded as a square matrix, which can be factorized into small amount of motion vectors. To solve factorization problem, we preposed the adaptation of Newton Raphson method into vector and matrix form, which is also computationally efficient. Combining multi frame motion estimation and the corresponding interpolation in hierarchical manner enhancement algorithm of motion parameters is proposed, which is suitable for motion compensation and panorama synthesis. The proposed algorithms are suitable for special effect rendering for broadcast system, video indexing, tracking in complex scenes, and other fields requiring global motion estimation.

In this paper, we propse an object-oriented coding method in low bit-rate channels using pyramid structure and residual image compensation. In the motion estimation step, global motion is estimated using a set of multiresolution images constructed in a pyramid structure. We split an input image into two regions based on the gradient value. Regions with larte motions obtain observation points at low resolution level to guarantee robustness to noise and to satisfy a motion constraint equation whereas regions with local motions such as eye, and lips get observation points at the original resolution level. Local motion variations and intesity variations of an image reconstructed by the golbal motion are compensated additionally by using the previous residual image component. Finally, the model failure (MF) region is compensated by the pyramid mapping of the previous displaced frame difference (DFD). Computer simulation results show that the proposed method gives better performance that the convnetional one in terms of the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), compression ratio (CR), and computational complexity.

This paper treats the DIS (Digital Image Stabilization) problem subject to base motions such as translation, rotation and zoom. For the local motion estimation from a raw image, the Harris corner detection algorithm is exploited to extract feature points, and comparing those of consecutive images, the zoom ratio (scale factor) is computed. For the global motion estimation, an equivalent model is derived to account for a 3-dimensional composite motion from which the center point and Euler angle can be determined. Finally, the motion compensation follows. To show the effectiveness of the present DIS scheme, experimental results for synthetic images are illustrated.
