  • This paper focused on examining the middle school students' perceptions of characteristics(personal knowledge, human responsibility, impact on personal life, and predicted trend, behavior will) of 10 global and 8 local environmental issues. Subjects(N=516) demonstrated by completing a survey that they perceived the characteristics of issues differently on global and local scales, and to a degree those characteristics are related. First, middle school students' perceptions of global and local environmental issues were above mid-point mainly, and perceptions of local environmental issues were higher than those of global environmental issues. At perceptions of characteristics, They perceived that the personal knowledge of global environmental issues were higher than those of local issues, that the human responsibility effects on global environmental issues more than local environmental issues, that global environmental issues in the future, will be more serious. For each environmental issues, the perception of global warming among the global issues was highest, the perception of yellow dust and air pollution among the local issues was highest. For perceptions of characteristics, behavior will to solve the environmental issues was lower than that of 4 characteristics(personal knowledge, human responsibility, impact on personal life, and predicted trend). Second, there was significant difference of the perceptions of two scale environmental issues for area and sex. It showed that Seoul students' perceptions were higher than Kong-ju students' perceptions according to area, and that girl students' perceptions were higher than boy students' perceptions according to sex. Third, correlations among issues were significant. Especially, it was positive relationship between knowledge and human responsibility, human responsibility and impact on personal human responsibility and predicted trend. Educators and communicators should take into account the perceived characteristics of environmental issues and choose effective information sources and teaching methods to improve students' understanding of human-induced environmental changes.

Second, it was shown that the metropolitan students' perception levels of environmental issues were higher than the non-metropolitan students'. There wasn't a significant difference in the perception levels of two scale environmental issues and characteristics for sex (p>.05). • The external factors of global flavor market include the world economy, population growth, urbanization, consumer spending, raw material availability, pricing, and regulatory issues. And the internal factors as product pricing and technology development may lie the flavor house's competitiveness and cost considerations. In developing countries, rising preference for packaged food and beverages and increasing personal expenditures will drive demand for flavor market. Increasing consumer demand for natural products, driven in part by health concerns and a desire for transparency in labeling will impact the demand. The increasing demand for salt and sugar reduction will boost demand for flavors to maintain the overall taste. The use of quality and innovative flavors in the beverages and the multifunctional flavors has a positive influence on the global market. The global flavor industry has the presence of several drivers and positive trends, with its future expected to be promising.

  • This article will review the historical background of the development of area studies and the adoption of global studies in Japan. Global studies, which focuses on global issues such as migration, mainly developed in the United States and Europe, but more recently found home in universities in Japan. A characteristic of the development of global studies in Japan is that specialists in area studies have played an important role in institutionally establishing this new discipline. "Japanese area studies" has an affinity with the concepts of global studies contrary to the situation with area studies in the United States. Conventional academic societies based on area studies in Japan, however, have been forced to change as a result of globalization and the establishment of global studies in Japan. I would like to point out that there is some discrepancy between the scholarship boundaries and the actual research and educational program in area studies. I will also discuss how we should reconsider the concept of "area" by tackling global issues.

  • Living in the Information Age, schools and teachers are expected to utilize new information technology in education to make teaching more effective. In Japan, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has been strongly implementing policies to promote information education (IE) in schools since 1988. According to a survey in 2005 (Japan MEXT, 2005), 100% of high schools in Japan at present have computers and the Internet connections. However, videoconferencing systems have only been introduced only in a small number of schools. This paper is the result of a pilot research to see the effects of using a videoconferencing system in a Japanese high school. The purpose of the research was to clarify the effects of introducing videoconferencing system in a Japanese high school and of utilizing it for conferences with other schools abroad on the studies of global issues. The target students were in the 12th Grade in the year 2006. The counterpart school was an Australian high school in Sydney and the conferences were held in English. International discussions on global warming were conducted between the Japanese and Australian students. Affective competence and cognitive competence were measured using questionnaires and worksheets given to students both before and after the videoconferences. The results showed that both cognitive and affective competences rose after each videoconference. Not only the students who actively participated in the conference but also those who were in the audience showed positive effects. In the field of international cooperation on global issues, especially, the effects were large. These results suggest that in order to teach global issues in which international effort and cooperation are needed, direct contacts with foreign students are effective in increasing student cognitive and affective competences. On the other hand, as English was the main communication tool in the conferences, Japanese students faced a certain difficulty in communication. Also, teachers, especially English teachers, were required to make great efforts to assist students in preparing for the conferences. The effectiveness of an international videoconference depends largely on students' English skills and teachers' efforts.

  • Nursing research in the United States (US) spans several decades. Many of the priorities/trends have stayed through the years. Today, the goal of producing evidence to support nursing care interventions coupled with the drive for Magnet Recognition has encouraged academic nurses (faculty) to work with nurse clinicians to form research teams. Interdisciplinary research teams have also formed to address growing concerns over patient safety and quality care. These issues are not just US issues but global ones. This article addresses US trends with the link to global research trends. The role that organizations such as the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Council of International Neonatal Nurses, Inc. (COINN) pay in shaping research agendas and promoting nursing research is highlighted. It emphasizes the key role that nurses, especially nurse leaders/administrators play in changing health outcomes through support of nursing research.

  • Throughout the six decades evolution of the public diplomacy concept, international relations approaches have remained at the margins of the field. An important international relations theory that has been virtually non-existent in the public diplomacy literature is the English School of international relations. This theory has been the centerpiece of literature in diplomatic studies, but curiously, has not been applied to public diplomacy. In this editorial, I outline a public diplomacy framework for global governance issues that builds on the English School and Pamment's framework on the intersection of international development and public diplomacy.
