  • The high-order Laplacian-type filter, which is capable of providing isotropic and sharp cut-off filtering on the spherical domain, is essential in processing geophysical data. In this study, a spherical high-order filter was designed by combining the Fourier method with finite difference-method in the longitude and latitude, respectively. The regular grid system was employed in the filter, which has uniform angular spacing including the poles. The singularity at poles was eliminated by incorporating variable transforms and continuity-matching boundary conditions across poles. The high-order filter was assessed using the Rossby-Haurwitz wave, the observed geopotential, and observed wind field. The performance of the filter was found comparable to the filter based on the Galerkin procedure. The filter, employing the finite difference method, can be designed to give any target order of accuracy, which is an important advantage being unavailable in other methods. The computational complexity is represented with 2n-1 diagonal matrices solver with n being the target order of accuracy. Along with the availability of arbitrary target-order, it is also advantageous that the filter can adopt the reduced grid to increase computational efficiency.

  • For fast and robust face detection, this paper proposes an approach for face detection using fusion of heterogeneous template matching. First, we detect skin regions using a model of skin color which covers various illumination and races. After reducing a search space by region labelling and filtering, we apply template matching with skin color and edge to the detected regions. Finally, we detect a face by finding the best choice of template fusion. Experimental results show the proposed approach is more robust in skin color-like environments than with a single template matching and is fast by reducing a search space to face candidate regions. Also, using a global accumulator can reduce excessive space requirements of template matching.

  • This paper proposes an efficient photo retrieval system that automatically indexes for searching of relevant images, using a combination of geo-coded information, direction/location of image capture device and content-based visual features. A photo image is labeled with its GPS (Global Positioning System) coordinates and direction of the camera view at the moment of capture, and the label leads to generate a geo-spatial index with three core elements of latitude, longitude and viewing direction. Then, content-based visual features are extracted and combined with the geo-spatial information, for indexing and retrieving the photo images. For user's querying process, the proposed method adopts two steps as a progressive approach, filtering the relevant subset prior to use a content-based ranking function. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, we assess the simulation performance in terms of average precision and F-score, using a natural photo collection. Comparing the proposed approach to retrieve using only visual features, an improvement of 20.8% was observed. The experimental results show that the proposed method exhibited a significant enhancement of around 7.2% in retrieval effectiveness, compared to previous work. These results reveal that a combination of context and content analysis is markedly more efficient and meaningful that using only visual feature for image search.

  • Recently, the problem of global warming has issued seriously, so Green IT(Information Technology) using RFID/USN is concerned in order to solve environmental problems. In this paper, we implemented that public area like an underground parking lot could reduce unnecessary energy consumption used by lighting control system based on Ubiquitous Sensor Networks. The lighting control system for underground parking lot is comprised of intersection nodes for watching cars enter and leave, and light node for controlling light. It applies the routing protocol based on hierarchical cluster, hierarchical addressing method, and probability filtering method for the specific place like an underground parking lot. The result after experiments shows that the lighting control system could decrease electrical energy consumption to around 61.7%.

  • As the integrated circuit device shrinks to smaller dimensions, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process was requirdfo the global planarization of inter-metal dielectric (IMD) layer with free-defect. However, as the IMD layer gest thinner, micro-scratches are becoming as major defects. However, as the IMD layer gets thinner, micro-scratches are becoming as major defects. Micro-scratches are generated by agglomerated slurry, solidified and attached slurry in pipe line of slurry supply system. To prevent agglomerated slurry particle from inflow, we installed 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ point of use (POU) filter, which is depth-type filter and has 80% filtering efficiency for the 1.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ size particle. In this paper, we studied the relationship between defect generation and polished wafer counts to understand the exact efficiency fo the slurry filteration, and to find out the appropriate pad usage. Our experimental results showed that it sis impossible to prevent defect-causing particles perfectly through the depth-type filter. Thus, we suggest that it is necessary to optimize the slurry flow rate, and to install the high spray bar of de-ionized water (DIW) with high pressure, to overcome the weak-point of depth type filter.

  • With GPS being the primary navigation system, Loran use is in steep decline. However, according to the final report of vulnerability assessment of the transportation infrastructure relying on the global positioning system prepared by the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, there are current attempts to enhance and re-popularize Loran as a GPS backup system through the characteristic of the ground based low frequency navigation system. To advance the Loran system such as Loran-C modernization and eLoran development, research is definitely needed in the field of Loran-C receiver signal processing as well as Loran-C signal design and the technology of a receiver. We have developed a set of Matlab tools, which implement a software Loran-C receiver that performs the receiver's position determination through the following procedure. The procedure consists of receiving the Loran-C signal, cycle selection, calculation of the TDOA and range, and receiver's position determination through the Least Square Method. We experiences the effect of an incorrect cycle selection and various error factors (ECD, ASF, sky wave, CRI, etc.) from the result of the Loran-C signal processing. It is apparent that researches which focus on the elimination and mitigation of various error factors need to be investigated on a software Loran-C receiver. These aspects will be explored in further work through the method such as PLL and Kalman filtering.

  • This paper presents an automatic Oriental ink-rendering technique that recreates the artistic style of Oriental paintings from a single image. In Oriental paintings are characterized by strokes with various thickness and disordered dispersion. In this study, a stroke drawing method was developed based on the canny edge detector and radial curvature that are suitable for lines with varied thickness even along a single stroke. A dispersion-shading method was likewise developed by applying a set of iterated dual-filtering, and intensity exaggeration methods. The dispersion-shading method is designed to increase the local shade details, to decrease the global shade. Unlike the existing watercolor-rendering and abstraction system the proposed dispersion-shading method achieves disordered shade details rather than simplification.

  • Existing image search systems allow users to search images by keywords, or by example images through content-based image retrieval (CBIR). On the other hand, users might learn more relevant textual information about an image from its text captions or surrounding contexts within documents or Web pages. Without such contexts, it's difficult to extract semantic description directly from the image content. In this paper, we propose an annotation watermarking system for users to embed text descriptions, and retrieve more relevant textual information from similar images. First, tags associated with an image are converted by two-dimensional code and embedded into the image by discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Next, for images without annotations, similar images can be obtained by CBIR techniques and embedded annotations can be extracted. Specifically, we use global features such as color ratios and dominant sub-image colors for preliminary filtering. Then, local features such as Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) descriptors are extracted for similarity matching. This design can achieve good effectiveness with reasonable processing time in practical systems. Our experimental results showed good accuracy in retrieving similar images and extracting relevant tags from similar images.

  • In this study, the applicability of the geostatistical evolution strategy as an inverse analysis method of estimating hydraulic properties of small-scale basin was tested. The geostatistical evolution strategy is a type of data assimilation method that can effectively estimate aquifer hydraulic conductivity by combining a global optimization model of the evolution strategy and a local optimization model of the ensemble Kalman filtering. In the applicability test, the geometry, hydraulic boundary conditions, and the distribution of groundwater monitoring wells of Hanlim-Eup were employed. On the other hand, a synthetic hydraulic conductivity distribution was generated and used as the reference property for ease of estimation quality assessment. In the estimations, two different cases were tested where, in Case I, both groundwater levels and hydraulic conductivity measurements were assumed to be available, and only the groundwater levels were available, in Case II. In both cases, the reference and estimated hydraulic conductivity fields were found to show reasonable similarity, even though the prior information for estimation was not accurate. The ability to estimate hydraulic conductivity without accurate prior information suggests that this method can be used effectively to estimate mathematical properties in real-world cases, many of which little prior information is available for the aquifer conditions.
