  • In this paper, a profile management system consisting of global and local range finders is presented for the automat ion of material pile handling. A global range finder detects range data of the front part of the piles of material and a profile map is obtained from a 3D profile detection algorithm. A local range finder attached on the side of the arm of the reclaimer detects range data with the handling function dynamically, and a local profile patch is acquired from the range data A yard profile map manager constructs a map by using the 3D profile of the global range finder and revises the map by replacing it with the local profile patch obtained Iron the local range finder. The developed vision system was applied to a simulator and the results of test show that it is appropriate to use for automating the material handling.

  • There is urgent need for effective and cost-efficient data storage, as the worldwide requirement for data storage is rapidly growing. DNA has introduced a new tool for storing digital information. Recent studies have successfully stored digital information, such as text and gif animation. Previous studies tackled technical hurdles due to errors from DNA synthesis and sequencing. Studies also have focused on a strategy that makes use of 100-150-bp read sizes in both synthesis and sequencing. In this paper, we a suggest novel data encoding/decoding scheme that makes use of long-read DNA (~1,000 bp). This enables accurate recovery of stored digital information with a smaller number of reads than the previous approach. Also, this approach reduces sequencing time.

  • Global map of solar surface magnetic field, such as the synoptic map or daily synchronic frame, does not tell us real-time information about the far side of the Sun. A deep-learning technique based on Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) is used to generate farside magnetograms from EUVI $304{\AA}$ of STEREO spacecrafts by training SDO spacecraft's data pairs of HMI and AIA $304{\AA}$. Farside(or backside) data of daily synchronic frames are replaced by the Ai-generated magnetograms. The new type of data is used to calculate the Potential Field Source Surface (PFSS) model. We compare the results of the global field with observations as well as those of the conventional method. We will discuss advantage and disadvantage of the new method and future works.

  • Increase of the greenhouse gases emissions during last century has led remarkable changes in our environment and climate system. Continuous monitoring of atmospheric constituents over the world is positively necessary to understand these changes around us. The concentrations of greenhouse gases ($CO_2,\;CH_4,\;N_2O,\;CFCs$) have been continuously measured at Global Climate Change Monitoring station in Gosan, Jeju since January, 2002. In this study, the variation characteristics of greenhouse gases as well as their annual, seasonal and diurnal trend using the data from January, 2002 to December, 2005 were analyzed. The raw data which was used in the analysis were validated with the methods recommended by WDCGG (World Data Center for Greenhouse Gases). The concentration of $CO_2$ was increasing continuously by 2.1 ppm/year, while $CH_4$ did not show any increasing or decreasing trend clearly for 4 years. The concentration of $N_2O$ was slightly increasing and CFCs were decreasing except CFC-12 which has longer lifetime compared with other CFCs. The variations of the greenhouse gases at Gosan were shown to be consistent with the global trend. But the concentration level of $CO_2$ in Korea was more or less higher than abroad.

  • In a wireless channel above microwave frequency, rain attenuation is very important. In order to predict rain attenuation, 1-min. rain rate distribution is required. This paper discusses appropriate conversion methods to estimate 1-minute rain rate from that of other integration time. Based on the measurement data filed in ITU-R WP3J including ETRI data for 6 consecutive years, distributions of rain rate with 1-, 5-, 10-, 20-, 30-minute integration time were analyzed, both on the global and regional basis, and the parametric relationship between the statistical characteristics of 1-minute and other measurement data were investigated to deduce the conversion methods. It is shown that the global model works good with good accuracy for 5-, 10-, 20-min integration time, and the global model is also applicable globally with good accuracy for 5-, 10-, 20-min integration time. The global conversion model was adopted last year as an ITU-R document for new recommendation. The regional conversion model would also be very useful for locations of similar climatic zone.

  • Based on the tide gauge data from the Permanent Service for Meau Sea Level (PSMSL) collected at 23 locations in the Korean coast, the long-term sea-level trend was computed using a simple linear regression fit over the recorded length of the monthly mean sea-level data. The computed sea-level trend was also corrected for the vertical land movement due to post glacial rebound(PGR) using the ICE-4G(VM2) model output. It was found that the PGR-corrected sea-level trend near Korea was 2.310 $\pm$ 2.220 mm/yr, which is higher than the global average at 1.0∼2.0mm/yr, as assessed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC). The regional distribution of the long-term sea-level trend near Korea revealed that the South Sea had the largest sea-level rise followed by the West Sea and East Sea, respectively, supporting the results of the previous study by Seo et al. However, due to the relatively short record period and large spatial variability, the sea-level trend from the tide gauge data for the Korean coast could be biased with a steric sea-level rise by the global warming during the 20th century.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop snow and sea ice detection algorithm in Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) meteorological data processing system. Since COMS has only five channels, it is not affordable to use microwave or shortwave infrared data which are effective and generally used for snow detection. In order to estimate snow and sea ice coverage, combinations between available channel data(mostly visible and 3.7 ${\mu}m$) are applied to the algorithm based on threshold method. As a result, the COMS snow and sea ice detection algorithm shows reliable performance compared to MODIS products with channel limitation. Specifically, there is partial underestimation over the complicated vegetation area and overestimation over the area of high level clouds such as cirrus. Some corrections are performed by using water vapor and infrared channels to remove cloud contamination and by applying NDVI to detect more snow pixels for the underestimated area.

  • Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has operationally produced Atmospheric Motion Vector (AMV) from the consecutive MTSAT-1R satellite image dataset. Comparing with radiosonde data, our current AMV scheme shows more than 10 m/s RMSE. Therefore we need to improve continuously its accuracy. Many AMV producers have stated that the bad performance of the Height Assignment (HA) algorithm is the main reason of degrading the accuracy of AMV. The uncertainties in AMV HA can occur in the algorithm itself, used NWP profiles, and the performance of Radiative Transfer Model (RTM) etc. This study introduces currently operated AMV HA schemes and the impacts of NWP profile data and RTM that these schemes use were investigated. Finally we analyzed the relationship between vectors by vector tracking and heights assigned to each vector by using collocated wind profile dataset with radiosonde data. This study is a preliminary work to improve the accuracy of AMV by removing or decreasing the uncertainties in AMV estimation.

  • We have investigated the correlation analysis between global temperature anomaly and two main factors: geomagnetic activity (aa index) of Earth external factor and CO2 of Earth internal factor. For this, we used NOAA Global Surface Temperature anomaly (Ta) data from 1868 to 2015. The aa index indicates the geomagnetic activity measured at two anti-podal subauroral stations (Canberra Australia and Hartland England) and the CO2 data come from historical ice core records and NOAA/ESRL data. From the comparison between (Ta) and aa index, we found several interesting things, First, the linear correlation coefficient between two parameters increases until 1985 and then decreases rapidly. Second, the scattered plot between two parameters shows a boundary of the correlation tendency (positive and negative correlation) near 1985. A partial correlation of (Ta) and two main factors (aa index, CO2) also shows that the geomagnetic effect (aa index) is dominant until about 1985 and the CO2 effect becomes much more important after then. These results indicate that the CO2 effect become very an important factor since at least 1985. For a further analysis, we simply assume that Ta = Ta(aa)+Ta(CO2) and made a linear regression between (Ta) and aa index from 1868 to 2015. A linear model is then made from the linear regression between energy consumption (a proxy of CO2 effect) and Ta-Ta(aa) since 1985. Our results will be discussed in view of the prediction of global warming.

  • In this study, long-term global illuminance data for 19 selected cities are calculated from modeled solar radiation data, AEER's TMY2. Perez model in Daysim daylight simulation tool is used for the solar radiation to illuminance conversion. And then, daylight availability in an unit office space is evaluated for the 19 cities. For this evaluation, various daylight performance indices are reviewed since static daylight performance index such as daylight factor (DF) and annual average global illuminance value is not suitable for actual performance evaluation in terms of visual comfort and light energy saving of a space. This study evaluated daylighting performance of prototypical office space module by introducing DA (daylight autonomy) and UDI (Useful Daylight Illuminance) index for major cities of Korea. Result shows that there is upto 18% of illuminance level difference with annual average global illuminance data, but if we consider useful daylight in a space the illuminance level difference among the cities are only within 5%. This means that for sustainable building design especially in daylight design, amount of annual global illuminance is not important factor even in cloudy cities. Daylight design and daylight harvesting system would return similar energy saving impact regardless of building location.
