  • The concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), which is one of the major greenhouse gases, continues to rise with the increase in fossil fuel consumption. In order to mitigate global warming the amount of CO2 discharge to the atmosphere must be reduced. Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technology is now regarded as one of the most promising options. To complete the carbon cycle in a CCS system, a huge amount of captured CO2 from major point sources such as power plantsshould be transported for storage into the marine or ground geological structures. Since 2005, we have developed technologies for marine geological storage of CO2,including possible storage site surveys and basic design of CO2 transport and storage process. In this paper, the design parameters which will be useful to construct on-shore and off-shore CO2 transport systems are deduced and analyzed. To carry out this parametric study, we suggested variations in thedesign parameters such as flow rate, diameter, temperature and pressure, based on a hypothetical scenario. We also studied the fluid flow behavior and thermal characteristics in a pipeline transport system.

  • Teak (Tectona grandis) is one of the most valuable timber yielding species in the world, with predominant distribution in tropical or sub-tropical countries. However, natural teak available only in few countries like India, Myanmar, Laos People's Democratic Republic and Thailand. Teak grows well in deep, well-drained alluvial soils, fairly moist, warm, tropical climate with pH ranges from 6.5-7.5. Teak is cultivated in many Asian, African and South American countries for timber production. The global teak plantations are estimated to be three million hectare with major share in India (44%) followed by Indonesia (33%). India is considered as richest genetic resources of teak with large areas of natural teak bearing forests (8.9 million ha), plantations (1.5 million ha), clonal seed orchards (1000 ha) and seed production areas (5000 ha). The studies on diversity of teak populations showed that teak is an out crossing species with major portion of diversity present within the populations. The productivity and quality of teak timber varies depending upon the site and environmental conditions. Teak wood is moderately heavy, strong and tough, straight grained, coarse textured and ring porous with specific gravity varies from 0.55 to 0.70. The sapwood is white to pale yellow in colour and clearly demarcated while heartwood is dark brown or dark golden yellow in colour. Teak is one of the most durable timbers in the world, practically, impervious to fungus and white ant attack and resistant to decay. Teak wood is used in ship and boat constructions, furnitures and aesthetic needs. Genetic improvement programmes have been undertaken in countries like Thailand, India, Malaysia and Indonesia. The programme includes provenance identification and testing, plus tree selection and clonal multiplication, establishment of seed orchards and controlled hybridization. Several aspects like phenology, reproductive biology, fruit characteristics, silvicultural practices for cultivation, pest and diseases problems, production of improved planting stock, harvesting and marketing, wood properties and future tree improvement strategy to enhance productivity have been discussed in this paper.

  • Even though global warming and humid climate have resulted in an increase of use of dehumidifiers, they are not becoming more common because of high energy consumption. Furthermore, conventional dehumidifier technology finally reaches the limit to increase energy efficiency of water collection. As an alternative, nature-inspired technology may lead to a major breakthrough in the dehumidification performance. In order to improve the efficiency of dehumidifiers, we first analyze the energy consumption of commercial dehumidifiers and then study bioinspired water collection methods adopted by Namib beetles and grass.

  • Trade and the environment emerged as a major and complex issue for trade negotiators in the final stages of the Uruguay Round negotiations. The agreements and other international measures employing trade measures and trade sanctions for achieving global environmental objectives are Vienna Convention on the Protection of the Ozone Layer(1985), the Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete the Ozone Layer(1987), The Framework Convention on Climate Change(1992), the Convention on Biological Diversity(1992), the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Waste and their Disposal(1992), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Faunna and Flora(1975), the Rio Declaration, the Agenda 21, etc. The texts of the World Trade Organization(WTO) incorporated certain provisions which were designed to reflect some of the environmental concerns are Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Properity Rights(TRIPs), Trade-Related Investment Measures (TRIMs), the General Agreement on Trade in Services(GATS), and Technical Barriers to Trade(TBT) There is the possibility of conflict between multilateral environmental agreements and WTO agreements granting waivers against trade measures and sanctions. This remains a possibility, especially between countries which are Member of WTO and which are not Members of the relevant multilateral environment agreements, and countries which are Members of both the WTO and the relevant MEAs. Measures taken under the trade-related provisions of MEAs could potentially give rise to conflicts under obligations arising in WTO texts. If the parties in dispute are WTO members while they are not members of MEAs, the WTO provisions can be granted a certain priority in terms of international norms and vice versa. When the parties concerned are both WTO members and MEAs, it will be rational to grant the WTO provisions a priority. However, such measures should neither constitute a means of arbitrary or unjustifiable discrimination between countries where similar conditions prevail, nor create a disguised restriction on trade. Also any trade measures taken should be necessary to prevent developments in trade from endangering the effectiveness of an MEA and they should be proportional and least trade restrictive.

  • The increase in frequency and scale of natural disasters is the typical negative examples of the global climate change and the change of the human living environment. The damage caused by natural disasters in particular including human and physical damage is directly linked to the safety and properties of citizens. Besides, damage occurs directly or indirectly to the SOC facility, and the damaged SOC facility violates the citizens' safety rights. Therefore, a plan to provide prompt and effective risk map information by linking a 3D disaster information display system, which handles the information of the damage that may occur to SOC facilities at the time of disasters, with an on-site assistance application is suggested in this study. The prompt provision of risk map information is defined as a dynamic expression technology in this study. It also processes and compresses the system to display disaster information, a spreading system that can utilize on-site information, and a module developed to organically link with the DB system that builds information and relationships. Based on the module, the effective disaster information compression plan will be prepared, and the prompt information transmission system will be secured.

  • Purpose: As we are facing the global crisis from the climate change and energy depletion, urgent actions are needed to design a integrated sustainable building. This paper suggests that a sustainable design awards can stimulate for architects to bring the cutting-edge ideas into a realized building in comparison to green building certification system. AIA COTE Top 10 design awards, organized and run by AIA(American Institute of Architects) COTE(Committee on the Environment) from 1997, is analyzed as a case study. By researching the core of the AIA COTE Top 10 design awards system in terms of evaluation measures and submission requirements, meaningful suggestions were drawn to supplement Korea Green Building Awards system and to design and realize leading green buildings in Korea. Method: The comparison between AIA COTE Top 10 and Korea Green Building Design Awards was made in terms of evaluation measures, submission requirements, and green building certification systems. Result: This paper finally suggests the following three points in conclusion: 1) Set the standards of evaluation measures reflecting the three aspects(economy, environment, social) of sustainability, 2) Set the qualitative evaluation measures and corresponding submission requirements that can apply in the design awards in comparison to green building certification system, 3) Develop and balance submission requirements in response to evaluation measures to proceed systematic evaluation of the green buildings.

  • Human beings are having suffered from the unexpected climate changes which are caused by global warming leaded from air pollution. More than 3 billions of people will be forced to experience insufficient water in 2015. In Korea, over 70% of precipitation has been concentrating in Summer season. Furthermore, natural disasters has been occurred constantly all over the country. The unusual flood and drought have broken out not only victims but also, property damages. By the natural condition, the effective consuming and controlling system of water is going to be the core business field and constructing dams will be encouraged and promoted for the system. To convince the objectionable against the constructing dams, a dam exhibition center stands the very important position by being responsible for the presenting positive factors and highlighting the beneficial functions. The dam exhibition center is built as complex space combined by information center regarding water resources and visitor center for the community nearby the inundated area. Combined of the different purposes, the dam exhibition center can be confused to understand the concept and contents established in the space. To enhance the visitors' understanding contents of the dam exhibition center, the spatial composition and contents are being analyzed with existing centers and define the most effective exhibition methods between the spaces and visitors. This study will be the basic quantitative analysis data for the following design works those can get the better insight how to make visitors to get information and agreement of constructing dams effectively.
