We show that thermal rearrangement of glassy polymers below the thermal degradation temperature can create unexpected and large microvoids in the membranes, leading to unexpected high gas permeability with high gas selectivity. These current polymer membranes display unexpected gas permeation-separation performance. There are above the upper-bound for conventional polymer membranes for several gas pairs. In the present study, molecular simulation, BET sorption, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), and gas separation experiments were performed to characterize the unusual structure-property relationship of these rigid glassy polymer membranes.

The gas permeation performance of commercially available polyetherimide (Ultem$\^$/) is simulated by means of molecular dynamics methods. By the observation of trajectory, long distance hopping of gas molecules is needed to transverse from top to bottom of membrane. Two possibilities mechanism of diffusion phenomena through glassy polymers can be issued. Diffusion coefficients were calculated by Einstein relation equation. In solubility simulation, the value of the constants C'$\_$H/ and b for O$_2$ at 300 K were calculated. The diffusion and solubility coefficient of He for PEI were simulated in this simulation work. the permeability coefficient is 9.88 Barrer. This value is closed to experimental value of 9.4 Barrer.

In this study, the microvoids in glassy polymers were investigated by Xe sorption and $^{129}Xe$ NMR measurements. Xe sorption isotherms of glassy polymers have been successfully interpreted by the dual-mode sorption model. $^{129}Xe$ NMR chemical shift of the $^{129}Xe$ in the samples show nonlinear low-field shift with increasing sorption amount of Xe because of a fast exchange of Xe atoms between Henry and Langmuir sites, whereas it has showed linear shift against sorption amount of Xe into the Langmuir site. From this Xe-density dependence of the $^{129}Xe$ NMR chemical shift, it has been able to estimate mean size of the microvoids in glassy polymer. It is confirmed that there is correlation between ${C_H}'$ and volume or number of microvoids. From these findings, it is demonstrated that $^{129}Xe$ NMR spectroscopy is a powerful technique to determine the mean size and number of microvoids in glassy polymers.
The sorption equilibria and permeation rates for carbon dioxide in such glassy polymer membranes with high glass-transition temperature as polyimide, polyetherimide, polysulfone and polyethersulfone membranes, were measured. The sorption isotherms for these systems can be described well by the dual-mode sorption model, whereas the pressure dependences of the mean permeability coefficients are simulated better by a modified dual-mode mobility model than the conventional dual-mode mobility model in which the Henry's law and Langmuir populations execute four kinds of diffusive movement.
The study on penetrant transport in glassy polymers has been actively pursued for decades because of its growing significance in polymer processing and related applications such as not only membranes, but corrosion protective coatings, microlithography, microelectronic fabrication, etc. In membranes application of polymeric materials, successful utilization requires understanding of how solvents penetrate, swell, and sometimes dissolve polymeric materials under various environmental conditions, as their permselecdve performance is significantly affected by it. The expose of polymer membranes to solvents may result in the structural failure due to mechanical softening, embrittlement or crazing.
The research on miniature devices based on non-silicon materials, in particular polymeric materials has been attracting more and more attention in the research field of the micro/nano fabrication in recent years. Lost of applications and many literatures have been reported. However, the study on the micro thermal imprint process of glassy polymer is still not systematic and inadequate. The aim of this research I to obtain a numerical material model for an amorphous glassy polymer, polycarbonate (PC), which can be used in finite element analysis (FEA) of the micro thermal imprint process near the glass transition temperature (Tg). An understanding of the deformation behavior of the PC specimens was acquired by performing tensile stress relaxation tests. The viscoelastic material model based on generalized Maxwell model was introduced for the material near Tg to establish the FE model based on the commercial FEA code ABAQUS/Standard with a suitable set of parameters obtained for this material model form the test data. As a result, the feasibility of the established viscoelastic model for PC near Tg was confirmed and this material model can be used in FE analysis for the prediction and improvement of the micro thermal imprint process for pattern replication.
The catalytic activity of poly[(2,2'-bipyridine)copper(II)-μ4-oxalato] coated on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for O2 electroreduction is examined using cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode techniques. The cyclic voltammograms show that O2 is electroreduced on pBpCuOx-coated GCE surfaces at a peak potential of ? 0.25 V in pH 4.7 acetate buffer media. The electroreduction of O2 on pBpCuOx-coated GCE occurs at 450 mV more positive potential than that found at a bare GCE. The catalytic activity originates from Cu(II) coordinated by bipyridine in the complexes and the polymer type Cu-complex films exhibit an enhanced stability compared to monomeric Cu-complexes during the O2 electroreduction. The rotating disk electrode measurements reveal that the electroreduction of O2 on pBpCuOx-coated GCE is a four-electron process. Kinetic parameters for O2 reduction on pBpCuOx-coated GCE are obtained from rotating disk experiments and compared with those on bare glassy carbon electrode surfaces.
