  • Glasses industry has great growth potential from the future-oriented perspective in Korea. In consideration of the fact that the ratio of aging population increases in this aging society, people have more and more interest in health. Also, their recognition on the cycle to change glasses is changing, and the utility of them as fashion items is increasing day by day, it is expected that the demand for glasses will be even more extended afterwards. Of course, presently it suffers from the gap between cheaper items and expensive ones provided by overseas prominent brands due to the bi-polarization of the market. However, they are pursuing the 2nd growth as export-leading items in the past through international glass exhibitions based on knowhow accumulated for a long time. Therefore, this study aims to examine the current status of glasses design industry in Korea reflecting the actual situations we have now and also understand the problems and limitations internalized in our glass design industry through the research process. As a result, the study has drawn the following conclusions. This paper intends to point out first, the phenomenon of bi-polarization of the glass market in Korea. Second, unequal distribution by region centering around Daegu. Third, the limitations of brand identity. Fourth, the limitations of information, planning, and marketing power. Fifth, passive conduction of international events and their insufficient effects. This study concludes that all these problems can be solved through 'planning and design, and marketing power'.

For the purpose of this study, women's appearance decoration was limited to eyeglasses, earrings, hair length, and clothing color. A quasi-experimental method was used for this study. The experimental design was a $3{\times}2{\times}2{\times}4$ (eyeglasses${\times}$earrings${\times}$hair length${\times}$clothing color) factorial design. The model of stimulus photographs was a woman in her late twenties. She wore a tailored collared jacket with a white dress shirt. The subjects were 362 female college students residing in Seoul. The results of the research were as follows. First, the woman wearing glasses and earrings was perceived as more professional than the woman without glasses and earrings. The woman with short hair was evaluated to be more professional than the woman with long hair. Light grey and dark grey jackets enhanced a professional image in the woman than red and dark red jackets. The woman without glasses was preferred more than the woman wearing glasses, and the woman wearing earrings was preferred more than the woman without earrings. Second, the woman wearing wire-rimmed glasses, earrings, and grey jacket with short hair was perceived to have the highest level of professionalism. Third, the subjects perceived the woman wearing wire-rimmed glasses as looking the oldest and the woman without glasses as looking young. • Vision is the most important sense of the five senses in our body. This represents that an eye is for the mysterious organ playing the essential role in our body. Alain Mikli known as a famous spectacle designer in France said that glasses exists for seeing and for being seen. This saying is one of the philosophically well-organized definition of the most fundamental function of eye-glasses described in and out of itself. Today, in the world, there are a number of works of glasses design and lots of glasses designers are designing hard in order to convey the goods with the best value and philosophy to customers. They work for the goal that glasses is used as seeing and try to give customers satisfaction and enjoyment of it. And they think that glasses should play the role of the interface. At this point, we need to catch hold of the interface of glasses. That means that glasses has to have the communication between eyes and objects and be the mediation of the connection between the image of oneself and that of one by others. For the character of the interface of glasses, glasses designers should plan and investigate this character at the being of design. This study of optical art has been researched for the necessary and sufficient condition between consumers and products.

  • Purpose: This study analyzed the factors related to adaptation of people who wears progressive lenses glasses for the first time. Methods: 463 presbyopia (Aged 41~78) without any ocular diseases with the progressive lens glasses were prescribed from 2010 to 2011 at B clinic in the Gwangju city. Progressive lenses adaptation were analyzed according to gender, age, distance refractive state, presbyopic addition, progressive lens design, the old glasses, astigmatism type, and anisometropia etc. High, mid and low-adapted groups were categorized as the status of wearing progressive lenses glasses, re-wearing, occasionally wearing and failed to weraing, respectively. Results: Men showed significantly higher adaptation (p=0.02) than women. Presbyopic addition (p=0.05) and progressive lens design (p=0.02) were statistically significant. However, it was found that there was so statistical significance for the factors of age, distance refractive state, the old glasses, astigmatism type, and anisometropia. Conclusions: According to the results of this study, when progressive lenses were prescribed, we should consider for adaptation gender, presbyopic addition, and progressive lens design etc.

  • This study surveys the brand and design recognition by an expert vs. non-expert group in the eye glasses industry. This survey is to search for a way for domestic brands to compete and win foreign ones. The non-expert group chose design as the most noteworthy difference between domestic and foreign brands; likewise, the expert group appeared to first consider design on their choice. Brand recognition by the non-expert group appeared very low; on the other hand, expert group's recognition was higher with domestic brands than with foreign ones. In conclusion, the bounce back of domestic eye glasses business does not seem to be possible in a snap by a special recipe; rather, it is necessary to invest and make efforts to develop new techniques for better quality on the one hand, and to increase brand and design recognition on the other.

  • The purpose of this study was to closely examine the history of glasses and their cases used in the middle and late of Joseon Dynasty and identify inherent quality of our traditional glasses cases through color analyses of glasses cases' material and shape. While theoretical examination was conducted based on the literatures of glasses and their cases that firstly appeared in around Japanese Invasion (Imjin war) of Korea in 1592, practical analyses were demonstrated on photos of glasses cases used in the middle and late of Joseon Dynasty collected from both museum pieces and the internet which were grouped into wood, fabric, paper, sharkskin, hawksbill and cow's horn in accordance with their materials. 623 color samples were abstracted from collected 159 glasses cases and quantity analyses on each material were performed respectively. Abstracted representative colors based on the result of color analyses were classified into the main materials and accessories' color scheme. The result of this study are as follow: firstly, both Yellow and Yellow Red were mostly used in main materials. In Fabric case's colors were widely used in embroidery and in animal matter material cases such as sharkskin, hawksbill and cow's horn, which can be used as itself or dyed, Green Yellow shown in high frequency. Secondly, accessories were analyzed into similarity coloration with main materials. From this finding, it turns out that our traditional cases have characteristic of similarity coloration between main materials and accessories. Red Purple and Purple Blue in high frequency in accessories used as an accent color. Finally, based on the analysis of hue and tone, while the middle and low value colors shown in very high frequency, the high-chroma colors hardly shown.

  • This study investigated the development of eyeglasses and design transition in materials and types through literature survey. The scope of this study on the basis of the 15th century, for this study survey reaches from the 15th century to modern. The result of this study were as follows. Real magnifying glasses was first mentioned by the Arab physicist al-Hazen who was famous of his treatise on optics. The oldest documents which explicitly refer to the art of making lenses for eyeglasses and magnifying glasses were the Venetian artisans of 1300. In the 15th century someone thought to remedy the unstability of glasses by securing the bridge on the forehead. But it was only in the 17th century that someone contrived to stabilize the frame by strapping it on the face by means of fine cords that reached behind the ears. Eventually in the early years of the 18th century the English optician Edward Scarlett invented the rigid earpieces which solved once and for all the problem of holding the eyeglasses firmly in place. In the 19th century, eyeglasses' fashion were monocle and pince-nez. In the 20th century, various lenses and frames were appeared. Therefore eyeglasses to correct defective sight, sun-glasses, as well as a most succesful item among modern fashion accessories.
