Objectives : This study conducted to investigate oral care abilities in diabetic patients to find a good dental method which may efficiently control diabetes. Methods : The diabetic group consisted of 40 patients with type 2 diabetics, while the non-diabetes were 34 persons with no signs of diabetics, who had visited a Public Health Center and dental clinic of a general hospital in Gwangju city from Dec. 2008 to Sep. 2009. Periodontal disease, gingivitis, dental caries, tongue plaque and halitosis between diabetic group and non-diabetic group were examined and at the same time a questionnaire survey was conducted. The data were analyzed with chi-square, t-test, pearson correlation coefficients using the SPSS WIN 15.0 program. Results : The mean values of both the community periodontal index and the gingival index of diabetic group were 2.18 and 1.75, respectively, and those were higher than those (1.79 and 1.50) of non-diabetic group with no statistical significance. The mean saliva secretion of non-diabetics was 16.74 mL, which was higher than 13.90 mL of diabetic patients(p<0.05). The oral care ability(mean 3.10) acquired from plague index in diabetic group was worse than in non-diabetic(mean 2.33). Conclusions : The high blood sugar concentration in diabetic patients causes low saliva secretion and high saliva viscosity, with the results halitosis and periodontal disease take place. This study suggested that good oral care ability of diabetic patients was very helpful to prevent periodontal disease and halitosis. In addition to this, it may reduce complications of diabetic patients.

Autism is characterized with an abnormality of reciprocal social relatedness and of communication development. Also, autistic children show repetitive and stereotypical behavior pattern and deficiency of endurance against change. Dental problems related to autism are self-injury and trauma from accidents. Sometimes self-injury is due to discomfort resulting from restoration and local anesthesia. Also, gingivitis and multiple caries are common because of poor oral hygiene. Autistic children are anxious about visual and auditory stimuli because they don't understand the dental procedure. If the face of any changes in their daily life, their behavior becomes uncontrollable. In a setting such as the outpatient office, an autistic child's uncontrollable behavior makes it difficult to carry out proper treatment. If they need treatment under general anesthesia, it is very difficult to manage them in a ward as they are severly anxious about being admitted to a hospital. Therefore it is necessary to treat these children according to a specific management program under general anesthesia in an outpatient office. This case study reports of a 14 year old autistic teenager who although became uncontrollable because of the pain from multiple caries and from anxiety of the dental treatment eventually received treatment under general anesthesia and under conscious sedation in an outpatient office.
The present study was performed to evaluate the relationship between the serotype or the genotype of Actnobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (A. a.) and the severity of periodontal disease. Total 64 A. a. clinical isolates were sampled from 46 sites of 20 subjects classified into the group I (1 periodontally healthy subject, 2 gingivitis patients, 5 ealry adult periodontitis patients), group II (3 moderatelly adult periodontitis patients) and group III (1 advanced adult periodontitis patient, 8 RPP patients). Southern bolt hybridization (fingerprinting) patterns of the five reference strains, A. a. strain ATCC 29523 (serotype a), ATCC 29522 (Serotype b), ATCC 43719 (serotype c), IDH 781 (serotype d) and IDH 1705 (serotype e), were used as the five basic genotypic patterns (A, B, C, D, E). NT type was designated as one which did dnot represent any of those five basic types. The serotypes were determined by ELISA technique with the serum samples from pre-immunized rabbit. Based on subject-based analysis, it was noted that genotypes A and C, NT, and B, D, E were significantly related to the disease groups I, II, and III, respectively. It was also noted that both the serotypes a and c were significantly related to the disease group I and II, while serotypes were significantly related bm), and serotypes b and nd were frequently found in sites with severe attachment loss (LA>6mm). The results indicated that the significant relationship can be delineated beteen the genotypes and the serotypes of Acinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and the periodontal disease severity. The results also indicated that genotyping can provide more detailed information on its relationship with the disease severity based on both the patient-based and the site-based analyses.
Purpose: The present study has two aims; firstly, it attempts to verify the presence of oxidative stress by estimating the reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in periodontal pockets ${\geq}5$ mm as compared to controls. The second aim is to evaluate the effect of lycopene as a locally delivered antioxidant gel on periodontal health and on the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a marker of oxidative injury. Methods: Thirty-one subjects participated in this study. In the pretreatment phase, the ROS levels in pockets ${\geq}5$ mm were measured by flow cytometry. Three sites in each subject were randomly assigned into each of the following experimental groups: sham group, only scaling and root planing (SRP) was done; placebo group, local delivery of placebo gel after SRP; and lycopene group, local delivery of lycopene gel after SRP. Clinical parameters included recording site-specific measures of GCF 8-OHdG, plaque, gingivitis, probing depth, and clinical attachment level. Results: The gel, when delivered to the sites with oxidative stress, was effective in increasing clinical attachment and in reducing gingival inflammation, probing depth, and 8-OHdG levels as compared to the placebo and sham sites. Conclusions: From this trial conducted over a period of 6 months, it was found that locally delivered lycopene seems to be effective in reducing the measures of oxidative stress and periodontal disease.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of oral health education for the elderly using $Qscan^{TM}$. Methods: This study was a quasi-experiment design of nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design carried out by oral health education from January 17 to March 7, 2015. The subjects were 64 elderly people over 65 years old who had more than one remaining teeth in the anterior teeth and canines living in Hongseong-gun and assigned to 33 control group and 31 intervention group. The intervention group was measured only by $Qscan^{TM}$. The educational effect between two groups were evaluated using oral health behavior, gingivitis index, and plaque index. After Institutional Review Board from Namseoul N University, the elderly people participated in the study. Results: The intervention group showed lower plaque index of percent reduction than the control group. The two groups showed a significant difference in gingival index after the oral health education(p<0.05), but did not show a significant difference in oral health behavior after the oral health education(p<0.05). Conclusions: The effect of oral health education through the motivation of $Qscan^{TM}$ was very effective in the comparison of oral health behavior, gingival index and plaque index.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of oral lesions in human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) patients in a descriptive cross-sectional study, and to establish their presence according to levels of CD4+ cells (including the CD4+/CD8+ cell ratio). Materials and Methods: A total of 75 patients infected with HIV were included. Oral lesions were observed and classified using World Health Organization classification guidelines. Potential correlations between the presence and severity of oral lesions and CD4+ cells, including the CD4+/CD8+ cell ratio, were studied. Results: The most frequent oral lesion detected was oral pseudomembranous candidiasis (80.0%), followed by periodontal disease (40.0%), herpetic lesions (16.0%), hairy leukoplakia (16.0%), gingivitis (20.0%), oral ulceration (12.0%), Kaposi's sarcoma (8.0%), and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (4.0%). The CD4+ count was <$200cells/mm^3$ in 45 cases (60.0%), between $200-500cells/mm^3$ in 18 cases (24.0%), and >$500cells/mm^3$ in 12 cases (16.0%). The mean CD4+ count was $182.18cells/mm^3$. The mean ratio of CD4+/CD8+ cells was 0.26. All patients showed at least one oral manifestation. Conclusion: There was no correlation between the CD4+/CD8+ cell ratio and the presence of oral lesions. The severity of the lesions was more pronounced when the CD4+ cell count was less than $200cells/mm^3$.
The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect oftea catechin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on killing of oral bacteria. The antibacterial activity of 2.5 mg/ml and 5.0 mg/ml EGCG was investigated for target bacteria of which initial cell number was approximately adjusted to $10^{7}ml$. The antibacterial activity of EGCG was proportional to the concentration according to colony-forming unit(CFU) of target bacteria enumerating on selective and complex media. Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus at 5mg/ml EGCG were completely killed within 8 hrs. Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus acidophilus were also killed within 2 hrs and 4 hrs under the same conditions, respectively. Oral bacteria at 2.5 mg/ml EGCG were completely killed within 10 hr. Colony numvers of S. mitis and S. salivarius treated with 2.5 mg/ml EGCG were decreased on MS solid media and no colony was observed on the media within 12 hrs. In consequence, EGCG would be a natural and effective compound that kill oral bacteria being caused of bad breath, plaque and gingivitis, and for preventing and treating dental caries.
This research reached conclusions to prepare indications for activity of Oral health Instruction of the first grade in an elementary school by several items of Oral examination and investigation. 1. The frequency of brushing their teeth of the children that were examined was generally two times a day(64.42%) : it showed that it was the highest after breakfast (30.08%), and hardly any brushed their teeth after lunch(6.36%). 2. Most of the toothbrushes used were for children(97.46%), and the proper time to change their toothbrushes was less than two months(65.25%), but 31.37% of them used their toothbrushes for more than three mouths. 3. They usually used toothpaste. Those using toothpaste were 64.41%. By the way, for adults was the percentage 31.36%, and for those including fluorine it was 74.58%. 4. They mainly ate cookies, beverages, (coke, cider, etc.), fruit, bread, milk and so on for their dessert. 5. Most students had dental plaque (95.76%) : 14.4% of then had calculus and 23.73% had gingivitis. 6. The results of disclosing showed that twelve anterior teeth were colored. The Mandible was comparatively more severe than the Maxillary in the colored -degree. the low -right - laterial incisor was the most severe and the right central incisor was the most severe of the Maxillary. 7. The pressure of tooth - brushing showed that half of the students brushed their teeth severely. The width of the brushing movemtnts was more than 8mm for 51.70%, 5-8mm for 33.05% and less than 5mm for 15.25% Therefore 66.5% of them were shown to move their brushes insufficiently or oppositely. 8. When they brushed, the children who opened their mouth while brushing were more than those who kept their mouth closed.
It has been believed that antioxidant enzymes such as CuZn- and Mn-superoxide dismutase and catalase protect the tissue from damage resulting from the oxygen derived free radicals($O_2\;^-$, $H_2O_2$ and OH ). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between activity of antioxidant enzymes including CuZn- and Mn- superoxide dismutase and catalase and inflammatory periodontal disease and periodontal parameters. For this study, the patients were classified into normal, gingivitis, adult periodontitis and rapidly progressive periodontitis, and then their papillary bleeding index(PBI) and probing depth were checked. Gingival tissues were surgically obtained from the patients during periodontal surgery, extraction, and clinical crown lengthening procedure. The activity of CuZn- and Mn- superoxide dismutase and catalase in the gingival tissues was measured by using UV-spectrophotometer by the same methods as Crapo et al. And Aebi did, respectively. The results were as follows : 1. CuZn- and Mn- and total-superoxide dismutase activity were significantly low in rapidly progressive periodontitis group in comparison to normal group (P<0.05). 2. In comparison of the antioxidant enzyme activity according to papillary bleeding index group(PBI), Mn-superoxide dismutase activity only was significantly lower in PBI 2, 3, and 4 groups than PBI 0 group(P<0.05). 3. Superoxide dismutase activity failed to show any significant difference according to probing depth. But significant]y high catalase activity was shown in deep pocket group (${\ge}7mm$)(P<0.05). In conclusion, these results suggest that the activity of Mn-superoxide dismutase among the antioxidant enzymes may reflect the inflammatory status of gingival tissue and that the decreased activity of superoxide dismutase may be one of responsibe factors for progression of rapidly progressive periodontitis.
Volatile odor substance originating from drying and making dry peel of tangerine from the fruit skin were collected through modern equipment. The anti-microbial activity of the substance against various skin-residing bacteria including acne, dandruff, athelete's foot, and gingivitis inducing microorganisms were tested. Anti-microbial activity was observed in purified oil, where 87 to 92% was D-limonene. Against P. acnes, 103$cfu/m{\ell}$ of P. acnes were suppressed at 0.1% Unshiu oil, and the MIC was measured to be 0.3%. Against P. ovale, a dandruff inducing bacteria, 104$cfu/m{\ell}$were suppressed at 0.1% Unshiu oil, and the MIC was measured to be 0.1%. Against T. rubrum and T. Mentagrophytes, both of which are athelete's foot inducing microorganisms, 83% of T. Mentagrophytes and 99.9% of T. rubrum were suppressed at 0.1% Unshiu oil, and the MIC were 0.3% and 0.05% respectively. Against S. aureus, a skin infection inducing bacteria, 103$cfu/m{\ell}$ of the bacteria were suppressed at 0.1% Unshiu Oil. Against B. subtilis, a non-pathogenic sporulating bacteria, 104$cfu/m{\ell}$ of the bacteria were suppressed at 0.1% Unshiu Oil. Against C. albicans, found in mucous membranes, 104$cfu/m{\ell}$ of the bacteria were suppressed at 0.1% Unshiu Oil. Against Aspergillus niger, an otomycosis inducing microorganism, 99.9% were suppressed at 0.1% Unshiu Oil. The results above indicate that low concentration of purified oil extracted from tangerine had strong antimicrobial activities against bacteria and fungi residing on the skin, and that it may be developed into skin disorder treating products in the future.
