Two types of annual bluegrass have been reported, and those consist of annual type (Poa annua ssp. annua) and perennial type (Poa annua ssp. reptans). As a weed, annual bluegrasses are commonly found in putting greens and fairways in many golf courses. Due to its strong competitiveness such as tremendous seed reproduction rate a year, prostrate growth habit, and no herbicide availability, annual bluegrasses have been considered as one of the most hard-to-control weeds in turf management systems. A growth chamber study was conducted to determine seed dormancy and to understand seed germination characteristics of annual bluegrass (Poa annua ssp. annua). Freshly harvested seeds showed 80 and 55% germination at 30 and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively, indicating that the optimum temperature of annual bluegrass is $30^{\circ}C$. However, the seed germination occurred only under light condition at any given temperature. This result demonstrated that light is prerequisite for the seed germination, and no primary dormancy of annual bluegrass seed exists. Secondary seed dormancy induced by unfavorable temperatures and dark condition was broken through 4 to 6 wk-storage at $4^{\circ}C$ with moisture, and the stored seeds germinated at $20^{\circ}C$ even under the dark. In red and far-red light trial, fresh seeds resulted in 40% germination under red while no seed germination occurred under far-red light condition, indicating that phytochrome Pr and Pfr could be related to annual bluegrass seed germination. When the far-red light replaced the red the germination was recovered, but this reversibility did not reach to the germination level under the red light only. This result implied that other lights than red and far-red would play an important role on seed germination of annual bluegrass.
Viviparous germination causes yield loss and quality deterioration of rice. This study was conducted to investigate varietal differences of the viviparous germination with different days after heading (DAH) and different temperatures. In the laboratory examination, the averaged germination rate of all varieties at 45DAH and at 25DAH was 79.9%, and 27.5% under the incubation at the temperature of 3$0^{\circ}C$/2$0^{\circ}C$ (day/night) for 12 days. Andabyeo, Da- sanbyeo, and Nonganbyeo showed the lowest viviparous germination rates among the tested varieties. The shoot length of the viviparous germination measured 12days after incubation at 30/2$0^{\circ}C$ ranged from 21 to 53mm, indicating significant deterioration of rice quality. In the field test, the averaged viviparous germination rates of rice varieties at 25, 35, 45DAH with the underwater conditions for 4 days were 2.2, 6.2 and 9.2%, respectively, while their rates at 12 day after underwater conditions increased to 17.6, 44.2 and 43.8%, respectively. A variety that showed the highest viviparous germination rate at 25 and 35 and 45DAH was Heukjinjubyeo. When standing rice panicles without lodging were examined after consecutive raining for 7 days Juanbyeo showed the highest viviparous germination (45.5%), followed by Odaebyeo (16.0%), Jinbubyeo (14.5 %), Bongkwangbyeo (14.2 %) and Obongbyeo (12.6%). The viviparous germination of rice was greatly affected by variety, days after heading and temperature settings. Bongkwangbyeo, Juanbyeo, Dongjinbyeo, Hwasunchalbyeo, Naepoongbyeo and Heukjinjubyeo were classified as the most susceptible varieties to the viviparous germination in the field conditions.
Background: Usually ginseng seeds are sown during autumn and spring. Sowing in spring often results in poorer seedling establishment than in autumn. One of the reasons for poor germination could be cold-treatment condition for breakage of physiological dormancy during winter. Here we tested the effects of storage temperature used during cold treatment on germination. Methods and Results: Germination properties were observed after dehiscent seeds were stored as wet and dry at 2℃, -2℃, -3.5℃ and alternating temperature (AT). Seed dryness and storage temperature affected germination properties (p < 0.01). Wet and AT condition germinated highest, and wet and -3.5℃ condition germinated lowest, which was 91.2% and 1.4% respectively. Mean germination time (MGT) of the wet and AT condition was faster than other treatments at 2.4 days, and the dry and -2℃ condition was the longest. Germination performance index (GPI) was highest for wet and AT condition (37.7%) and the lowest for wet and -3.5℃ condition (0.5%). The growth of above-ground and below-ground were the best for wet and 2℃ condition, and wet seeds showed better growth than dry seeds (p < 0.01). Conclusions: For cold treatment, ginseng seeds may not be stored below -2℃ for successful germination during spring sowing.
Research was initiated to investigate germination characteristics of creeping bentgrass (CB, Agrostis palustris Huds.). Seven varieties of CB were evaluated with different experiments. An alternative environment condition requiring for a CB germination test by International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) was applied in the Experiment I, consisting of 8-hr light at $25^{\circ}C$ and 16-hr dark at $15^{\circ}C$(ISTA conditions). Experiment II was conducted under a room temperature condition of 5 to $25^{\circ}C$(natural conditions). In each experiment, data such as seed germinating vigor, early germination characteristics, germination speed and germination peak time were measured. Significant differences were observed in seed germinating vigor, early germination characteristics, germination speed and germination peak time. Seed germinating vigor was variable with different environments and varieties. It was 61.50 to 98.25% under ISTA conditions and 55.00 to 98.50% under natural conditions. There were considerable variations in early germination characteristics among CB varieties according to different conditions. Early germination characteristics indicated that all varieties were 1 to 4 days faster in germination under ISTA conditions, when compared with natural conditions. The germination speed, measured as days to seed germination of 70% and 90%, was much faster with Penn A-1, Penn A-4 and Penncross under ISTA conditions. But it was even faster with L-93 and Penncross when grown under natural conditions. Differences were also observed in germination peak time with varieties and growing conditions. It was 0.57 to 2.86 days under ISTA conditions and 0.74 to 1.74 days under natural conditions. Regardless of the environment conditions, the shortest variety was L-93 and the longest one T-1. Considering germinating vigor, early germination characteristics, germination speed and germination peak time, Penn A-1, Penn A-4 and Penncross were regarded as excellent varieties under ISTA conditions in terms of early establishment characteristics, while L-93, Penn A-1 and Penncross under natural conditions. These results suggest that an intensive germination test be needed prior to planting, for the early germinating vigor, germination speed and germination peak time. Also, a proper variety selection and comprehensive site analysis for the growing environmental conditions should be done before golf course construction.
This study was conducted to determine the effects of seed storage temperature and pre-treatment on seed germination, seedling quality and vigor index of wild Trichosanthes kirilowii and Trichosanthes kirilowii var. japonica. As a result the highest germination rate of T. kirilowii was the 95% at seed stored in room temperature and then soaking for 24 hours in $dH_2O$. And the highest germination rate of T. kirilowii var. japonica was 96% at seed stored in $2^{\circ}C$ and then soaking for 24 hours in $GA_3$ (100 ppm). But the seed germination rate was non-significance in pre-treatment at seed stored in room temperature $2^{\circ}C$. Seedlings of T. kirilowii and T. kirilowii var. japonica showed not only the best seedling quality but also seedling vigor index in seed stored at $2^{\circ}C$ and then soaking for 24 hours in $GA_3$ (100 ppm). In this research, T. kirilowii and T. kirilowii var. japonica seed were stored in room temperature or $2^{\circ}C$, and then sown in peat moss, seed germination rate was more than 90% and production of superior quality seedlings.
Experiments were carried out to find out the optimum water potential, temperature, and duration for the priming of rice seeds, Oryza sativa L. (cv. Ilpumbyeo) for better germination at sub-optimal temperatures. Seeds were primed in 0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6, -0.8, and -1.0 MPa PEG (polyethylene glycol) solutions at $25^{\circ}C$. The optimum water potential for seed priming, the highest water potential at which rice seeds did not germinate, was -0.6 MPa. To find out optimum priming temperature and duration rice seeds were primed in -0.6 MPa PEG solution and 0 MPa (water as a control) for various durations at 15 and $25^{\circ}C$ and the seeds were germinated at 17, 20, and $25^{\circ}C$. Considering germination rate and speed, the optimum priming time in water (0 MPa) was 4 days at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 1 day at $25^{\circ}C$, while 4 days was the optimum priming time in a -0.6 MPa PEG solution, regardless of the priming temperature. Priming reduced the actual time of germination, especially at sub-optimal temperatures. Priming did not affect germination rate in -0.6 MPa PEG solution at 15$^{\circ}C$, but overpriming reduced the final germination rate in water at 15$^{\circ}C$ and in -0.6 PEG solution at $25^{\circ}C$. Total sugars and $\alpha$-amylase activity induced during the seed priming were negatively correlated with the final germination rate and there was no noted relationship with the speed or uniformity of germination.
The Hairy labrador tea (Ledum palustre L. var. diversipilosum Nakai) is a evergreen small shrub, belonging to the Ericaceae and mainly distributed along the alpine areas of Hamgyeong-do in North Korea. Through seed physiological research on North Korean plants, we intend to obtain basic data for the development of mass propagation methods and use them for vegetation restoration. The internal and external morphological characters of the seed were observed using scanning electron microscopy or stereoscopy, and full seeds were selected through X-ray test. Seeds were cultured on a growth condition at 15/6℃ and 25/15℃ to examine the germination response according to temperature, and the number of germinated individuals was examined every 24 hours to calculate germination percentage and mean germination time. Low-temperature treatment (4℃) and hormone treatment (GA3) were performed to investigate the effect of dormancy breaking, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed on the experimental results using SAS 9.4. The seeds of the Hairy labrador tea were elliptical-narrow in shape, and the epidermal cell wall pattern was reticulated. The final germination rate (FGP) was the highest at 58.9% under the condition of low temperature treatment at 25/15℃. The average number of days to germination (MGT) was the highest at 25.1 days without treatment at 15/6℃, and the average of the last germination days was confirmed to be about 13 days. As a result of low temperature treatment, it was confirmed that the final germination rate (FGP) increased by 43.3%. The significance of the final germination rate (FGP) was verified according to the pretreatment at 25/15℃.

Iris dichotoma Pall. found on Daechung Island in Korea has been designated as an endangered species. To aid in conservation efforts of this species, this study investigated its germination characteristics and seed dormancy type. Four sets of seeds were incubated at different temperatures (4/1℃, 15/6℃, 20/10℃, and 25/15℃). One set of seeds was cold stratified (4 weeks at 4/1℃). The final germination rate and mean germination time showed that the optimal germination temperature was 25/15℃. Final germination rates were ~70%, showing no significant difference among temperature treatments. However, mean germination time were significantly different among all temperature treatments except for 4/1℃. Mean germination time for seeds with temperature treatments of 15/6℃, 20/10℃, and 25/15℃ were 3.2, 2.1, and 1.5 weeks, respectively. At 25/15℃, the mean germination time was half of that at 15/6℃. Seeds of I. dichotoma had fully developed embryos at the time of dispersal. No additional growth of the embryo was observed. Cold stratification did not affect the final germination rate or the mean germination time. This study shows that seeds of I. dichotoma have no physiological or morphological dormancy, unlike other members of the Iris genus known to have seed dormancy that needs a relatively high incubation temperature (≥25/15℃) for mass propagation to occur. These results will be useful for understanding ecophysiological mechanisms related to the species' habitat. They are also useful for mass propagation of I. dichotoma for the purpose of conserving this endangered species.
This study was carried out in order to examine the germination characteristics of Atractylodes japonica seeds, and it was to develop the more efficient pre-treatment and production system of the seeds. Experiment was performed by two ways-temperature control (10, 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$) and shading treatment (full sunlight, 35, 50, 75, 95% of full sunlight). Seed pre-treatment before the each experiment was carried out by temperature (with low temperature and wetting treatment (LTW) for 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days) and shading treatment (with drying at room temperature (DRT), drying at low temperature (DLT) and water soaking (WS) for 48 hours). Seeds of A. japonica were germinated well under temperature control (overall 85.3~100%), especially high temperature. And, the seeds pre-treated with LTW for 45 days germinated with a 100% success rate. Under the surveying shading treatment, the highest germination rate was 95.8% with DRT and overall 63.2~95.8%. Germination rate under seeds with WS was 63.2~7.8%. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, A. japonica seeds don't need to pre-treat cause of high germination, but if it is performed with LTW for a certain period of time, it would be more productive.
