This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of water potential by PEG treatment on germination and quantitative changes of seed storage reserves of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], peanut(Arachjs hypogaea L.) and corn(Zea may L.). Water potential of PEG(M.W. 10, 000) solution as germination media was 0.0, -0.2, and -0.5MPa. The highest moisture uptake rate was found in soybean seedlings among three crops. Moisture content of seedlings of three crops was decreased at -0.5MPa treatment and seedling length was delayed with water potential decrement. As water potential decreased, decreasing rate of protein content of the seedlings compared to seeds was declined in soybean and peanut. Decreasing rate of starch content of the seedlings was decreased in corn at -0.5MPa treatment. Increasing rate of sugar content of the seedlings was markedly decreased at -0.5MPa treatment in all crops. The results of this experiment showed that availability of moisture and synthesis of sugar for seed germination were influenced below -0.5MPa water potential in three crops.
To find out allelopathic potential of naturally occurring substances emitted form pinus korairnsis, water extracts and volatile sudstances of the tree materials werw provided and used for tests such as seed germination and seedling growth test. In general, the more was the concentration of the extracts and essential oils, the worse was growth effects of the selected species. The germination an the growth were inversely proportional to the concentration of the extracts and the essential oils of p. koraiensis. in other words, the chemical substances had the biological toxic activity. gc and gc/ms methods were employed for analysis and identification of phytotoxic substances from the tree leaves. Sixteen chemical compounds were identified from water extracts and nineteen from essential oils of p. koraiensis leaves. Through the experiment on germination and seedling growth test, the chemical substances naturally occurring from p. koraiensis seemed to be responsible for the allelopathic potential in this study.
This study was carried out to elucidate the correlation between Germination Index(G.I.) and CO2 emission for evaluation of the maturity of compost products. 13 compost samples was used for this experiment. The G.I. test was carried out on the basis of T-N 200ppm. As a result of this research, we found that CO2 emission method was good simple indicator for evaluation of maturity of compost materials, in spite of G.I. The obtain results are summarized as follows ; 1. The correlation value between the G.I. and the CO2 emission was R2 = 0.776. 2. The correlation value between EC(Electric Conductivity) and G.I. was R2 =0.7. 3. The equation calculated from G.I. and CO2 emission was G.I. = -16.7(InCO2) - 6.87. 4. From these results, we found the possibility of estimation for the value of G.I.(T-N 200ppm) from CO2 emission volume under specific condition.
In the present experiment as a basic study for establishing a hybrid seed orchard, an observation was made on the survivability of grafts using Pinus rigida as the stock and its hybrids as the sciion, and on the shape and germination of pollen collected from grafted plants. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The hybrid scion of P. rigida.taeda or $P. rigida{\times}(P. rigida.taeda)$ grafted into P. rigida stock showed lower survivability than the homoplastic graftings of P. rigida. 2. Five among the eight eleven-year old scions homoplastically grafted into two-year old stock for the staminate strobile one year after their grafting. 3. There was no difference in the size and germination ability between the pollen collected from homoplastically grafted plant and from the normal one. 4. The pollen collected from the grafted plant is thought to be usable for the control pollination as the germination of such pollen was considerably good.

NIR specroscopy is widely used today as a quantitative technique for predicting the chemical composition of various agricultural product. However there exist few application for seed quality assessment, especially for seed germinability. This study is to show the possibilities of a nondestructive estimation of germinability in radish (Raphanus sativus L) seeds. The experiment carried out on one radish cultivar (Chung Su Gung Jung, Nong Woo Bio Co., Ltd.) harvested in 1993. NIR(Foss Co.) spectral measurements were carried out on the seeds surface of flat side. The seeds after spectral measurements were planted on blotter individually and observed germination. The seeds were characterized to nongermination and germination group, which in turn grouped to normal and abnormal germination and then compared with the NIR spectra. The spectra from these seed groups were compared each other, The result suggested that NIR spectra could be applicable to determine radish seeds germinability.
Research was initiated to investigate the early establishment characteristics and germination patterns of perennial ryegrass (PR, Lolium perenne L.). Eight cultivars of PR were evaluated in the study. Experiment was conducted under a room temperature condition of $6^{\circ}C$ to $23^{\circ}C$ (natural conditions). Daily and cumulative germination patterns were measured and analyzed on a daily basis. Significant differences were observed in germination pattern, days to the first germination, days to 50% germination, days to 75% germination, and germination percentage with different environments and cultivars. Germination percentage was variable with cultivars at the end of study. It was 66.25 to 93.50% under natural conditions. There were considerable variations in the early germination characteristics and germination pattern among the entries according to different conditions. The first germination was initiated between 3 and 5 DAS (days after seeding) under ISTA (International Seed Testing Association) conditions. But it started between 6 and 8 DAS under natural conditions, being 2 to 4 days later as compared with that under ISTA conditions. It was 8 to 12 DAS that reached to days to the 50% germination, which was 2 to 5 days after the first germination. Days to the 75% germination were 10.08 to 13.70 DAS under natural conditions, being 2.07 to 5.70 days slower as compared with ISTA conditions. 'Pennant II' was the fastest cultivar. But the slowest was 'Catalina II' that was 3.62 days later than 'Pennant II' under natural conditions. Considering days to the first germination, days to 75% germination, and germination pattern etc, 'Pennant II' and 'Brightstar II' were regarded as excellent cultivars under both conditions. From this study, information on differences in germination characteristics and patterns would be usefully applied for golf course design and construction, when established with PR.

The germination period, the germination under different saline concentration and temperature condition, the survival percent several halophytes in cross-transplanting experiment of marsh type and the soil environment factor of five dominant species were investigated on the halophytes population formation strategies on the salt marsh of Mankyeong river estuary from February to October 2005. In terms of germination, Suaeda japonica appeared first followed by Aster tyipolium Salicornia herbacda, Atriplex gmelini and Suaeda asparagoides. The germination percent on the humidify conditions and saline concentrations of halophytes were that Suaeda japonica germinated well under inundation conditions, high temperature and low salinity; Salicornia herbacda under high salinity; Aster tripolium and Atriplex gmelini under dry or inundation conditions, and Suaeda aspar agoides under dry conditions and high salinity. The survival percent in cross-transplanting experiment of five halophytes were high with Suaeda japonica in the low marsh; Salicornia herbacda, Aster tripolium and Atriplex gmelini in the mid marsh, Suaeda asparagoides in the high marsh. The soil properties were similar for the five halophytes, but soil texture appeared high in order of silt, sand and clay. These results suggested that population formation strategies of five halphytes. Suaeda iaponica was distributed in the low tidal marsh, Salicornia herbacda, Aster tripolium, Atriplex gmelini in the mid tidal marsh and Suaeda asparagoides in the high tidal marsh.

This study was carried out in order to investigate the germination and the early growth characteristics of Parasenecio firmus. Seed pre-treatment before the each experiment was carried out by shading treatment (with drying at room temperature (DRT), drying at low temperature (DLT) and water soaking (WS) for 48 hours). Experiment was performed by shading treatment (full sunlight, 35%, 50%, 75%, and 95% shading). Seeds of Parasenecio firmus were surveyed the highest germination rate (61.1%) in full sunlight with WS (overall 25.7~61.1%). Height was surveyed the highest under 95% shading. And root collar diameter was surveyed the highest in full sunlight. Fresh weights (leaf, shoot, root and total) were the highest under 50% shading. Dry weights (leaf, shoot and total) were the highest under 75% shading. It was indicated the lowest leaf, shoot, root and total under 95% shading. Leaf growth (leaf area, leaf length, leaf width and leaf thickness) and root growth (total root length, root project area, root surface area, root diameter and root volume) were good under 35%~75% shading, but the lowest under 95% shading. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, seed of Parasenecio firmus grows well under 50%~75% shading after germination by high sunlight with water soaking (WS).

This study was carried out to determine the effects of temperature and shading on germination and early growth of Pimpinella brachycarpa. Experiment was performed by temperature controls ($5^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$) and shading treatments (control, 35% shading, 50% shading, and 75% shading). Seed pre-treatment before the germination experiment was carried out by temperature (with low temperature and wetting treatments for 0day, 20days, and 40days). Seeds of P. brachycarpa were, 20days of seed pre-treatment, germinated well at $5^{\circ}C$ and the more temperature went up, the more germination rate went down. As a result of surveying shading treatments, the height, leaf area, leaf length, leaf width etc were the highest (7.3cm, $12.8cm^2$, 5.4cm, and 2.3cm, respectively) under 50% shading. Specially, the root was grown well under 35% and 50% shading. Fresh weight of shoot (leaves+stem) was the highest under 50% and 75% shading and dry weight of shoot (leaves+stem) was the highest under 35% and 50% shading. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, it is concluded that the production of P. brachycarpa seedling is more effective under 50% shading.
This experiment was carried out to get the basic information about long term storage (Temp.: -10${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$ and -l${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$, RH; 30${\pm}$6) of rice germplasm by using three Japonica and one Indica x Japonica cultivars based on the storage periods (96, 86, 58 and 20 months). The germination ability, based on the storing periods, was tested under the conditions of 30-32$^{\circ}C$ and 15-17$^{\circ}C$ air temperature. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. There were no significant differences between the short and long term storage conditions in the percentage of germination, average germination period, germination coefficient of the four varieties tested under both 15-17$^{\circ}C$ of low and 30-32$^{\circ}C$ of optimum temperature conditions. 2. Eventhough there were no significant differences in germination depending on the storage periods under optimum temperature condition (30-32$^{\circ}C$). Longer storage duration resulted in lower germination percentage, longer average germination period and lower germination coefficient under low temperature condition (15-17$^{\circ}C$). Comparing the varieties, the germination percentage of a Indica/Japonica cultivar "Tongil" was lower than that of Japonica cultivars under the low temperature condition (15-17$^{\circ}C$). 3. The longer period of storage, the more abnormal plants had appeared. 4. The germination ability was lost earlier under the condition of high moisture content in the seed and non-ventilation container.
