Understanding the thermohydraulic processes in the aquifer is necessary for a proper design of the aquifer thermal energy utilization system under given conditions. Experimental and numerical test were accomplished to evaluate the relationship between the geothermal heat exchanger operation and hydrogeological conditions in the open-loop geothermal system. Sand tank experiments were designed to investigate the open-loop geothermal system. Water injection and extract ion system as open-loop borehole heat exchanger was applied to observe the temperature changes in time at injection well, extraction well and ambient groundwater. The thermohydraulic transfer for heat storage was simulated using FEFLOW for two cases of extraction and injection phase operation in sand tank model. As one case, the movement of the thermal plume was simulated with variable locations of injection and extraction well. As another case, the simulation was performed with fixed location of injection and extraction well. The simulation and experimental results showed that the temperature distribution depends highly on the injected water temperature and the length of injection time and the groundwater flow and pumping rate sensitively affect the heat transfer.
A sea water source cascade heat pump was designed and tested in this study. The system was designed to perform a single stage operation in summer, as well as a cascade operation in winter to ensure the high temperature lift. A steady-state simulation model was developed to analyze and optimize its performance. The simulation results show that the R717 exhibits best performance among combinations considered in this study. A R410A also exhibits the highest performance among HFCs with the smallest compressor displacement. A 15-RT R410A-R134a pilot system was installed in the 5-story commercial building at Samcheok City by the East Sea. A scroll type R410A compressor, a reciprocating type R134a compressor, plate type condenser/ evaporator/ cascade heat exchanger and two electronic expansion valves were used to build a pilot. A titanium plate type heat exchanger is also used for the heat exchanging with a sea water. The heat source/sink water is supplied from the well below the seashore in the depth of 5 m. In the initial test of the system, supply water temperature was rising up to $67^{\circ}C$ using a sea water heat source of $9^{\circ}C$, while an ambient temperature was $4.5^{\circ}C$.

Renewable energy systems are essential for the realization of zero energy building (ZEB). Moreover, the integrated system using solar and geothermal energy has been developed for heating, cooling and power of the building. However, there are few studies considering various design factors for system design. In this study, in order to develop the optimal design method for the system, the performance of the system was quantitatively compared and analyzed through dynamic simulation. Moreover, economic analysis was conducted based on the results of system performance. Through the performance and economic analysis results, the optimal design method of the tri-generation system was proposed.

The geothermal heat pump systems were installed for heating and cooling of public buildings in Jincheon Eco-friendly Energy town. The heat pump system was operated at night to save on operational costs, and the cold heat was stored in thermal energy storage (TES). In this study, the performance of geothermal heat pump systems with the TES during the summer season was analyzed, and the operational costs with and without the TES were compared. The electric chiller model was used to simulate a heat pump applied without the TES system. Electric rates of each system were measured to calculate operational costs. When the TES is used in the air conditioning system, the electric load (30.4 MWh) calculated in the daytime can move to off-peak load time, and the operational cost is reduced by 36~54%.

In this paper, we designed a seasonal geothermal storage system and studied the applicability in the alluvial aquifer. We conducted a basic survey to apply this system to greenhouses actually operated in the Geum river basin alluvial aquifer. After choosing a potential area through electrical resistivity survey, the system parameters were set using drilling survey and pumping test result. We installed a system based on the factors, and operated for about 9 months. As a result, high temperature water(injection temperature $30^{\circ}C$) was stored at 22.5 Mcal ($1,609m^3$) for 3 months in cooling operation and 125 Mcal ($16,960m^3$) of low temperature water (injection temperature $7^{\circ}C$) were stored for 6 months in the remaining heating operation.

Geothermal heat pump system using sanding column well type with their ground heat exchanger can be used as a highly efficient source of heating and cooling in massive buildings. But there is no case of a small scale residential house. So in the residential house this study estimated heating coefficient of performance (COP) of geothermal heat pump system using sanding column well type which is excellent in heat recovery. As a result of analysis, The COP of heat pump is over average 6 and is excellent. And in consequence of making a comparative study according to the bleeding, the COP is higher in the case of bleeding. Therefore, bleeding affects the performance of the system. This study has shown performance result that stands on actual data. Therefore, this study provides ground data that needs when a low capacity of system designs for a residence with confidence elevation.

Among various types of geothermal heat pump systems, Vertical Closed-Loop Geothermal Heat Pump (VGSHP) has received increasing attention due to a variety of advantages such as the potential to be installed in a relatively small space and improved energy efficiency. In this research, the performance of VGSHP system coupled with heat storage tank was evaluated, by analyzing operational behavior of heat storage tank, the variations of heat pump energy performance due to the connection with heat storage tank, part load ratios characteristics of heat pump and the corresponding energy cost, compared to chiller and boiler based conventional system. The results of this study showed that the VGSHP system coupled with heat storage tank showed an energy saving effect of about 18% for cooling and about 73% for heating, and annual heating/cooling energy cost reduction of 43,000,000 KRW ($ 39,000), compared to the conventional air conditioning system. In addition, after considering both energy cost and initial investment cost including equipment, installation and auxiliary device expenses, payback period of approximately 11.8 years was required.
Membrane distillation process was used for desalination of hot (333 K) geothermal water, which was applied in the plant producing heating water. The investigated water contained 120 g salts/$dm^3$, mainly NaCl. The mineral composition was studied using an ion chromatography method. The obtained rejection of solutes was closed to 100%, but the small amounts of $NH_3$ also diffused through the membrane together with water vapour. However, the composition of obtained distillate allowed to use it as a makeup water in the heating water system. The geothermal water under study was concentrated from 120 to 286 g NaCl/$dm^3$. This increase in the solution concentration caused the permeate flux decline by a 10-20%. The geothermal water contained sulphates, which was subjected to two-fold concentration to achieve the concentration 2.4-2.6 g $SO{_4}{^{2-}}/dm^3$ and the sulphates then crystallized in the form of calcium sulphate. As a results, an intensive membranes scaling and the permeate flux decline was observed. The XRD analysis indicated that beside the gypsum also the NaCl crystallites were deposited on the membrane surfaces. The fresh geothermal water dissolved the mixed $CaSO_4$ and NaCl deposit from the membrane surface. This property can be utilized for self-cleaning of MD modules. Using a batch feeding of MD installation, the concentration of geothermal water was carried out over 800 h, without significant performance losses.

The investment in the technology of using a combined heat source is insufficient, which utilizes the advantages of various heat sources to maximize the potential energy and at the same time increases the performance of the heat pump. In this study, as basic data for the development of a high-efficiency hybrid heat pump system that actively connects and uses various heat sources, simulations were conducted for the heat pumps in two cases where geothermal and hydrothermal heat were applied respectively. In May, COP increased by about 27.3% compared to geothermal heat. In February, the COP percentage decrease of hydrothermal heat compared to geothermal heat is -6.9%. In May, total energy consumption can be reduced by 21.1% when hydrothermal is applied compared to geothermal heat. In February, the total energy consumption increases by 3.4%.
