  • The removal of iron from neodymium chloride solution was carried out by solvent extraction using Alamine 336 in kerosine. The effect of Alamine 336, hydrochloric acid and chloride ion concentrations on the extraction of Fe were studied. The results showed that Alamine 336 as an extractant for removal of iron was effective and the extraction percentage of iron was increased with increasing hydrochloric acid and chloride ion concentration in aqueous solution. The extraction of 99% of iron is attained at a ratio of A/O = 4 by distilled water. The stripping yield of iron from loaded Alamine 336 decreased with decreasing hydrochloric acid concentration in stripping solution.

  • It is getting difficult to manage water resources in South Korea because more than half of annual precipitation is concentrated in the summer season and its intensity is getting severe due to global warming and climate change. Artificial recharge schemes can be a useful method to manage water resources in Korea adapting to climate change. Patent analysis enables us to prevent overlapping investment and to find out unoccupied technology. In this study, international patent trends and barriers of artificial recharge technology are analysed for patents of Korea, Japan, the United States and Europe. The four artificial recharge methods such as well recharge, surface infiltration, bank filtration and underground structures are classified as main class and the nine sub-technologies such as water intake, water treatment, injection wells, monitoring of groundwater flow, groundwater pumping, surface infiltration/soil aquifer treatment, radial collection well, iron/manganese treatment, and underground subsurface dam are classified as intermediate class. Water intake techniques are subdivided into five classifications. Total 1,281 of patents, searched by WIPS DB tool and selected after removing noisy patents, are analyzed quantitatively to evaluate application trends by year, applicant, country for each classified technologies and analyzed qualitatively to find out occupied and unoccupied technologies. It is expected that upcoming research and development project could be performed efficiently in that an avoidance plan for the similar patents and differentiation plan for the advancing patents are set up based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis results from this research.

  • Spectral characteristics depending on soil constituents and their proportion in a soil were firstly studied for monitoring of soil contamination using hyperspectral remote sensing. The reflectance spectra of heavy metals in soils were investigated in the VIS-NIR-SWIR regions (400-2500 nm) to observe spectral variation as a function of constituents and concentrations. Commercial kaolinite soils mixed with lead, copper, arsenic, and cadmium were used as synthetic soil samples for spectral measurement. In case of copper, relatively spectrally active regions was observed with some band shift whereas other heavy metals had only simple spectral variations expected to be related to the sorption phase and the amount of metal onto kaolinite. The reflectance spectrum of each metal on kaolinite could be identified in VIS-NIR region.

  • This study implemented a chelating agent (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, EDTA) in purification to obtain high-purity vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) for use in VRFB (Vanadium Redox Flow Battery). V2O5 (powder) was produced through the precipitation recovery of ammonium metavanadate (NH4VO3) from a vanadium solution, which was prepared using a low-purity vanadium raw material. The initial purity of the powder was estimated to be 99.7%. However, the use of a chelating agent improved its purity up to 99.9% or higher. It was conjectured that the added chelating agent reacted with the impurity ions to form a complex, stabilizing them. This improved the selectivity for vanadium in the recovery process. However, the prepared V2O5 powder exhibited higher contents of K, Mn, Fe, Na, and Al than those in the standard counterparts, thus necessitating additional research on its impurity separation. Furthermore, the vanadium electrolyte was prepared using the high-purity V2O5 powder in a newly developed direct electrolytic process. Its analytical properties were compared with those of commercial electrolytes. Owing to the high concentration of the K, Ca, Na, Al, Mg, and Si impurities in the produced vanadium electrolyte, the purity was analyzed to be 99.97%, lower than those (99.98%) of its commercial counterparts. Thus, further research on optimizing the high-purity V2O5 powder and electrolyte manufacturing processes may yield a process capable of commercialization.

  • This study analyzed the spectral reflectance characteristics of kaolinite and ASTER(Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflectance Radiometer) image to extract the distribution of kaolin mines in Hadong area, Gyeongsangnam-do. The band ratio model was applied to extract kaolinite using difference of wavelength absorption band distinct feature of minerals from ASTER image which is the major mineral of kaolin mines. According to the spectral reflectance curve of kaolinite, it showed the absorption features around 0.96 and $2.18{\mu}m$ by Al-OH. Also, it affected 1.24 and $1.38{\sim}1.41{\mu}m$ by OH. Applying for new band ratio model from the spectral features of kaolinite to ASTER image, it is possible to make the distribution map of mining traces including present- developing kaolin mines.

  • In the present study, the thermodynamic evaluation of the sulfate-roasting process was conducted to extract vanadium from the Korean vanadium titano-magnetite ore. The leaching efficiency of vanadium and other impurities was analyzed for varying roasting temperatures and addition of Na2SO4. In the case of sulfate roasting, the roasting temperature was 200 ℃ higher than that previously observed Na2CO3 roasting. However, the higher leaching efficiency of vanadium and lower leaching efficiency of other impurities, such as aluminum and silicon, were observed. The high selectivity for the extraction of vanadium in sulfate roasting would result from the reaction mechanism between SO2 gas and vanadium concentrate.

  • Drone based Magnetic Anomaly Detection measure a magnetic anomaly signal from the ferromagnetic target on the ground. We conduct a magnetic anomaly detection with 9 ferromagnetic targets on the ground. By removing the magnetic field measured in the absence of ferromagnetic targets from the experimental value, the magnetic anomaly signal is clearly measured at an altitude of 100 m. We analyze the signal characteristics by the ferromagnetic target through simulation using COMSOL multiphysics. The simulation results are within the GPS error range of the experimental results.

  • Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) has been a promising technology to reduce the air pollution caused by nitrogen oxides (NOx) in several industries. The consumption of SCR catalysts increases every year as technology evolves, however those have a limited lifespan and usually end up in landfills after they deactivate. Currently, the most widely used catalyst for and stationary applications is V2O5-WO3/TiO2 which can contain around 50% wt V2O5 and 7-10% wt of WO3. The vast uses for both vanadium and tungsten and the worldwide interest in recycling methods that allow for the extraction of metals from secondary sources represent the major motivation for this research. The extraction time, pH dependency, extraction concentration studies were carried out using Aliquat 336 in exxol D80 as the extractant. It was determined that to optimize the extraction of both metals 30min of contact time with an organic phase containing 0.5mol/L of Aliquat 336 are needed at a slightly acidic pH (~5.0). In addition, counter McCabe-Thiele studies allowed us to determine that one stage is necessary for the removal of 99% of vanadium while 2 stages are necessary for the extraction of tungsten and counter current simulations proved that the theoretical approach was correct.
