  • River areas include channels, floodplains and all the areas affected by physical and ecological processes in river systems. It is noticeably different from present riparian zone which is bounded by dykes. In this study, two methods for delineation of a floodplain are proposed, which are used for evaluation of the function of a river. One of them is a geomorphology-based technique and the other is hydrology-based inundation analysis. For the Mankyung River, these two methods are applied to delineate the floodplain area. Areas delineated with both methods are mutually compared. The results show that the geomorphology-based method is suitable for the delineation of a valley bottom, including the floodplain in a broader sense, which is unlike an inundated area reflecting contemporary hydrologic conditions. Compared with other flood frequency areas, a 100-year flood inundation area was found reasonable to represent the spatial extent of a floodplain without regard to the longitudinal location along a river. However, it is necessary in certain rivers reach where the division of a channel exists to compare a geomorphological analysis on a valley bottom with an inundation area of different frequencies.

  • This study presents the methodology to link with aerial photos for advancing the accuracy of topographic survey data that is used to calculate water volume in urban stream. First, GIS spatial interpolation technique as Inverse Distance Weight (IDW) and Kriging was applied to construct the terrain morphology to the sand-bar and grass area using cross-sectional survey data, and also validation point data was used to estimate the accuracy of created topographic data. As the result of comparison, IDW ($d^{-2}_{ij}$, 2nd square number) in Sand-bar area and Kriging Spherical model in grass area showed more efficient results in the construction of topographic data of river boundary. But the differences among interpolation methods are very slight. Image classification method, Minimum Distance Method (MDM) was applied to extract sand-bar and grass area that are located to river boundary efficiently and the elevation value of extracted layers was allocated to the water level point value. Water volume with topographic data from aerial photos shows the advanced accuracy of 13% (in sand-bar) and 12% (in grass) compared to the water volume of original terrain data. Therefore, terrain analysis method in river linking with aerial photos is efficient to the monitoring about sand-bar and grass area that are located in the downstream of Dam in flooding season, and also it can be applied to calculate water volume efficiently.

  • In recent years owing to extensive land reclamation, increased river engineering activites and morer intense flood plain use, river geomorphology has attracted considerable attention. One of outstanding problems has been maintenance of river meanders and nearly all natural river exhibit the tendency to meander. Often the meander geometry was fitted in to various idealized model. COnsequently, both the selection of data and the methods to determine the geometric parameters were highly subject to individual preferences. This study applied statistical analysis in tipifying their shape and analysised meander characteristics by channel model of line generalization algorithm. This method is applied to Geum river system. The results show that the variance of curvature is a better index to describe the meander intensity and the kurtosis is a good index to characterize the total length of the straight sections for a given reach. The results also show that channel model of line generalization algorithm is a good model in analysis of meander characterisitics.

  • In the last few years the automatic classification of morpholgical landforms using GSIS and DEM was investigated. Particular emphasis has been put on the morphological point attribute approaches and the extraction of drainage basin variables from digital elevation models. The automated derivation of landforms has become a neccessity for quantitative analysis in geomorphology. Furthermore, the application of GSIS technologies has become an important tool for data management and numerical data analysis for purpose of geomorphological mapping. A process developed by Dikau et al, which automates Hanmond's manual process, was applied to the pyoung chang of the kangwon. Although it produced a classification that has good resemblance to the landforms in the area, it had some problems. For example, it produced a progressive zonation when landform changes from plains to mountains, it does not distinguish open valleys from a plains mountain interface, and it was affected by micro relief. Although automating existing quantitative manual processes is an important step in the evolution automation, definition may need to be calibrated since the attributes are oftem measured differently. A new process is presented that partly solves these problems.

  • This study introduces an analysis of the quantitative characteristics of topography and topographical changes based on precise 3D topography through 6 times surveys from December 2008 to January 2010 using Terrestrial LIDAR on the Malipo beach. The Malipo sand beach is mostly located between 0m to 1.5m MSL. The area of the beach above 2.25m, the Mean High Water, is very small. It have characteristics of topographical change of erosion and deposition along the entire coast line which more apparently appear in the northern beach than the southern part of the beach. Erosion prevails from spring to autumn, while during winter both erosion and deposition largely occur. Volumes from first and last survey were almost equal.

  • At present, an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) is one of the most suitable tools for measurement of three dimensional flow characteristics in the river. The data resulting from this approach can be used for flow visualization and velocity mapping together with post-processing software tools. Among them, 'adcptools' is the latest one and provides more realistic velocity distribution in the cross-section since it uses velocity along the beam direction. In this study, a flow analysis was made using the 'adcptools' for the Amazon River and the Han River dataset. Discharge was recalculated and accuracy of discharge and velocity was evaluated. Streamwise velocity distribution and secondary flow pattern in cross-sections were visualized. Geo-referenced velocity distribution was also mapped. A summary with future prospect of 'adcptools' for studies on fluvial geomorphology is briefly given.

  • A case study was conducted in Taean region to seek a more detailed macrotidal beach classification than existing beach classification models (Masselink and Short, 1993). Seepage and ridge & runnel were used for classification. On 20 beaches, 68 transects were surveyed 5 times using VRS-GPS. Cross-section area from the transect profiles, mean grain size from sediment analysis, significant wave height from Swan-wave modeling and beach embaymentization from aerial photograph analysis were used to identify the characteristics of the individual types. The transects were classified into 5 types in Taean region; Type 1: low tidal terrace, Type 2: low tidal terrace & ridge, Type 3: dissipative, Type 4: seasonal ridge, and Type 5: ridge & runnel. Generally, seepage was related to coarse sediment size and ridge & runnel was related to high significant wave height. Each type has different characteristics and there was a tendency between the types. The low tidal terrace type had coarse sediments, because this type is excluded from the littoral cell. In this study, the ridge and runnel type could be applied to the classification because the study area is limited only to the macrotidal environment in Taean region.

  • Geomorphological development and distribution at the macro scale provide a clue to the geotectonic characteristics that have affected the geomorphological system. This is because the developmental characteristics and distribution of the landform at the macro scale remain spatial characteristics due to tectonic processes, such as fault activity. From the perspective of tectonic geomorphology, this study identified the developmental characteristics and distribution of the Quaternary landforms in central-southern Yangsan fault and discussed its relevance to fault activity. In this paper, we presented examples and results of morphotectonic analysis of the Yangsan fault, and will present the results of age dating, stratigraphic relationship of the Quaternary landforms, and calculation of cumulative slip rate in the next paper.

  • Slope disaster is one of the repeated occurring geological disasters in rainy season resulting in about 23 human losses in Korea every year. The slope disaster, however, mainly depends on the spatial and climate properties. such as geology, geomorphology, and heavy rainfall, and, hence, the prediction or hazard analysis of the slope disaster is a difficult task. Therefore, GIS and various statistical methods are implemented for slope disaster analysis. In particular, GIS technique is widely used for the analysis because it effectively handles large amount of spatial data. The GIS technique. however, only considers the statistics between slope disaster occurrence and related factors, not the mechanism. Accordingly. an infinite slope model that mechanically considers the balance of forces applied to the slope is suggested here with GIS for slope disaster analysis. According to the research results, the infinite slope model has a possibility that can be utilized for landslide prediction and hazard evaluation since 87.5% of landslide occurrence areas have been predicted by this technique.
