  • The purpose of this numerical study was to investigate performance characteristics for cooling tower axial fans with sweep. Performance data for the fans with various sweep angles were obtained in terms of the setting angle at a constant flow rate. Viscous flow calculations were carried out to obtain Performance data of the total pressure rise and hydraulic efficiency. A solution of the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equations was used to calculate the sound pressure level at three times fan diameter away from the fan. The calculated performance data well represented performance characteristics of the cooling tower axial fan. The total pressure rise and hydraulic efficiency at the same setting angle decreased with sweep angle. Sound pressure level slightly decreased for the fan with a sweep angle of 10 degree. No significant effect of the sweep geometry was found on the sound pressure level.

  • An assessment of the field performance of machines for varied farming conditions may be essential to the development of mechanization program and rational machinery management. The field performance of machines is largely affected by the field capacity of machinery selected, physical size and shape of field plots and their scatterness, farming functions and conditions, and labor requirement and constraints. The study was to develop the mathematical model for the field performance of machines and time requirement of the rice farming systems, considering those factors which affect the field performance of machines. The mathematical models developed were simulated to determine field efficiency and capacity of the different sizes of major machinery for a various size of paddy field plot and for prevailing conditions of farming operations. The effects of the sises of machinery and the plot geometry on the efficiency and field capacity were compared for major rice farming functions.

  • In the present paper, we focus on the flow computation of a low head Propeller turbine at a wide range of design and off-design operating conditions. First, we will present the results on the efficiency hill chart prediction of the Propeller turbine and discuss the consequences of using non-homologous blade geometries for the CFD simulation. The flow characteristics of the entire turbine will be also investigated and compared with experimental data at different measurement planes. Two operating conditions are selected, the first one at the best efficiency point and the second one at part load condition. At the same time, for the same selected operating points, the numerical results for the entire turbine simulation will be compared with flow simulation with our standard stage calculation approach which includes only guide vane, runner and draft tube geometries.

  • An improvement of driving motor burning damages on a couplingless type warship fire pump is studied. The pump consists of an induction motor a pump-motor shaft and a volute type impeller. The burning damage had occured by changing the material of the pump-motor shaft from carbon steel(SM 45C) to stainless steel(STS 316) for improving anti-corrision properity in sea water. It is shown that a material change on the pump-motor shaft can reduce the efficiency of driving motor and may cause motor burning in the process of pump development stage. This kind of motor burning problem can be solved by increasing the efficiency of the motor and changing the geometry of the inner parts.

  • In this paper, numerical study on a mixed-flow pump for irrigation and drainage has been performed based on three-dimensional viscous flow analysis. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by finite volume approximations and solved by the commercial CFD code ANSYS CFX-11.0. A structured grid system is constructed in the computational domain, which has O-type grids near the blade surfaces and H/J-type grids in other regions. The numerical results were validated with experimental data for the heads and efficiencies at different flow coefficients. The efficiency at the design flow coefficient is evaluated with the variation of two geometric variables related to area of discharge and length of the vane in the diffuser. The results show that efficiency of the mixed-flow pump at the design flow coefficient is improved by the modifications of the geometry.

  • This paper is a record of the study on a high efficiency and high power chopper based on the new soft switching method QRAS (Quasi~resonant Regenerating Active Snubber) designed for a Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). This power chopper is basically proposed for 25kHz soft switching. To confirm the practicality and effectiveness of the converter, the fabrication of a prototype-model using IGBTs was completed. Additionally, a 8kW rating test, a light load test, a current discontinuous mode test and a stable operation resonance test was completed. The circuit geometry, the basic operation, and the 8kW one-tenth-prototype test results are reported with a $97.5\%$ efficiency measurement.

  • Using ray-optics code incorporated with three-dimensional PDP cell simulation, we have analysed the energy flow in the PDP cell from the electric power input to the visible light output. Also, the visible light output profile and viewing angle distribution were obtained. We applied our code to the analysis of the barrier rib height effect on the visible light luminance and efficiency of the sustaining discharge. Although cells with higher barrier rib generate more VUV photons, less ratio of visible photons are emitted toward front panel due to the shadow effect. Thus, there exists optimal barrier rib height giving the highest visible luminance and efficiency. This kind of code can be a powerful tool in designing cell geometry.

  • Capacities of screw are pumping, steady flow of polymer melts, volumetric efficiency, steady volumetric throughout etc. they are affected by geometry of screw, heat flux, pressure on inside barrel, rotating velocity, friction coefficient at screw surface etc. Also the temperature of polymer melts by heating pad and injection pressure play a very important role in the injection molding machine. by computation volumetric efficiency increases as rotating velocity increases, flight number increses, and decreases as friction coefficient increases. but volumetric throughout is different :s flight number increases with helix angle variability. so in this paper we analyze thermal distortion and stress of screw includes pressure and temperature distributions by finite element analysis to understand what design factors influence on thermo-mechanical characteristics of screw.

  • Since a large amount of radioactive waste is expected to be generated due to permanent shutdown of many nuclear power plants, it is necessary to prepare efficient management methods for radioactive waste. Therefore, there is a need for a based study to apply the In-Situ gamma spectrometry, which can simplify the measurement procedure. The purpose of this study is to analyze research cases of In-Situ gamma spectrometry and to analyze the sensitivity of measurement according to influencing factors on In-Situ gamma spectrometry. Research cases of five institutions, including the CERN and the Imperial College Reactor Centre (ICRC), were selected as the institutions to be investigated. Research on the In-Situ gamma spectrometry was conducted on the satisfaction of the acceptance criteria for radioactive waste and the analysis of residual radioactivity in the site. In-Situ Objective Counting System (ISOCS) was used as a major measuring device. Sampling and computer code were used to verify the analysis results. For evaluation of measuring sensitivity according to influencing factors on In-Situ gamma spectrometry, the thickness of the measurement target, the distance between the detector and the target, the angle of the collimator, and the contamination location were performed using ISOCS's Geometry Composer. In every case, based on 122 keV, the efficiency decreased as the energy increased in the high energy region, and the efficiency decreased as the energy decreased in the low energy region. As the target thickness increased, the efficiency decreased, and as the distance between target and detector increased, the efficiency decreased. As the distance between contamination and detector increased, the efficiency decreased, and as the angle of the collimator increased, the measurement efficiency increased. However, when simulating the measurement situation using Geometry Composer, the background is not considered, and the probability of incident in the background increases as the angle increases, so further research needs to be conducted in consideration of these. This study can be utilized when applying the In-Situ gamma spectrometry of radioactive waste clearance in the future.

  • The computational cost of clothing simulation and rendering is mainly depends on the type of mesh and its quality. Thus, quadrilateral meshes are generally preferred over triangular meshes for the reasons of accuracy and efficiency. This paper presents a method of quadrangulating sewing pattern based on the recursive geometry decomposition method. Herein, we proposed two simple improvements to the previous algorithms. The first one deals with the recursive geometry decomposition in which the physical domain is decomposed into simple and mappable regions. The second proposed algorithm deals with the vertex validation in which the invalid vertex classification can be validated.
