  • The purpose of this research is to analyze geometrical level and the justification process in the proofs of construction by mathematically gifted elementary students. Justification is one of crucial aspect in geometry learning. However, justification is considered as a difficult domain in geometry due to overemphasizing deductive justification. Therefore, researchers used construction with which the students could reveal their justification processes. We also investigated geometrical thought of the mathematically gifted students based on van Hieles's Theory. We analyzed intellectual of the justification process in geometric construction by the mathematically gifted students. 18 mathematically gifted students showed their justification processes when they were explaining their mathematical reasoning in construction. Also, students used the GSP program in some lessons and at home and tested students' geometric levels using the van Hieles's theory. However, we used pencil and paper worksheets for the analyses. The findings show that the levels of van Hieles's geometric thinking of the most gifted students were on from 2 to 3. In the process of justification, they used cut and paste strategies and also used concrete numbers and recalled the previous learning experience. Most of them did not show original ideas of justification during their proofs. We need to use a more sophisticative tasks and approaches so that we can lead gifted students to produce a more creative thinking.

  • Children's early mathematics education sets the tone for their later learning of mathematics. So the importance of early mathematics education has been emphasized day by day and there has been growing interest in it. The purpose of this study is to examine the possibility of including standards for kindergarten in mathematics curriculum and to select the specific content knowledge for designing mathematics curriculum focusing on continuity of kindergarten and first grade. To do this, continuity between kindergarten mathematics and the first grade mathematics were examined by investigating the five countries' mathematics curricula which include kindergarten level. Based on the results, the content standards of kindergarten mathematics were constituted in the categories of 'number and operation', 'geometry', 'measurement', 'pattern', and 'data and chance', following the some principles of selection. Finally, the implications for attainment of continuity between kindergarten and elementary mathematics were induced, containing the discussion of the methods for teaching and learning mathematics in the kindergarten level.

  • Detection of moving objects is a fundamental task in most of the computer vision applications, such as video surveillance, activity recognition and human motion analysis. This is a difficult task due to many challenges in realistic scenarios which include irregular motion in background, illumination changes, objects cast shadows, changes in scene geometry and noise, etc. In this paper, we propose an foreground extraction algorithm based on codebook, a database of information about background pixel obtained from input image sequence. Initially, we suppose a first frame as a background image and calculate difference between next input image and it to detect moving objects. The resulting difference image may contain noises as well as pure moving objects. Second, we investigate a codebook with color and brightness of a foreground pixel in the difference image. If it is matched, it is decided as a fault detected pixel and deleted from foreground. Finally, a background image is updated to process next input frame iteratively. Some pixels are estimated by input image if they are detected as background pixels. The others are duplicated from the previous background image. We apply out algorithm to PETS2009 data and compare the results with those of GMM and standard codebook algorithms.

  • Linear algebra is not only applied comprehensively in the branches of mathematics such as algebra, analytics, and geometry but also utilized for finding solutions in various fields such as aeronautical engineering, electronics, biology, geology, mechanics and etc. Therefore, linear algebra should be easy and comfortable for not only mathematics majors but also for general students as well. However, most find it difficult to learn linear algebra. Why is it so? It is because many studying linear algebra fail to achieve a correct understanding or attain erroneous concepts through misleading knowledge they already have. Such cases cause learning disability and mistakes. This research suggests more effective method of teaching by analyzing difficulty and errors made in learning system of linear equations.

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) is increasingly used throughout the facility's life cycle for various applications, such as design, construction, facility management, and maintenance. For existing buildings, the geometry of as-built BIM is often constructed using dense, three dimensional (3D) point clouds data obtained with laser scanners. Traditionally, as-built BIM systems do not contain the material and textural information of the buildings' elements. This paper presents a semi-automatic method for generation of material and texture rich as-built BIM. The method captures and integrates material and textural information of building elements into as-built BIM using thermal infrared sensing (TIS). The proposed method uses TIS to capture thermal images of the interior walls of an existing building. These images are then processed to extract the interior walls using a segmentation algorithm. The digital numbers in the resulted images are then transformed into radiance values that represent the emitted thermal infrared radiation. Machine learning techniques are then applied to build a correlation between the radiance values and the material type in each image. The radiance values were used to extract textural information from the images. The extracted textural and material information are then robustly integrated into the as-built BIM providing the data needed for the assessment of building conditions in general including energy efficiency, among others.

  • Design optimization is a mathematical process to find an optimal solution through the use of formal optimization algorithms. Design plays a vital role in the engineering field; therefore, using design tools in education and research is becoming more and more important. Recently, numerical design optimization in fluid mechanics, which uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD), has numerous applications in the engineering field, because of the rapid development of high-performance computing resources. However, it is difficult to find design optimization software and contents for educational purposes in aerospace engineering. In the present study, we have developed an aerodynamic design framework specifically for an airfoil, based on the EDucation-research Integration through Simulation On the Net (EDISON) portal. The airfoil design framework is composed of three subparts: a geometry kernel, CFD flow analysis, and an optimization algorithm. Through a seamless interface among the subparts, an iterative design process is conducted. In addition, the CFD flow analysis and the design framework are provided through a web-based portal system, while the computation is taken care of by a supercomputing facility. In addition to the software development, educational contents are developed for lectures associated with design optimization in aerospace and mechanical engineering education programs. The software and content developed in this study is expected to be used as a tool for e-learning material, for education and research in universities.

  • When a dangerous event arises for people inside a building and an immediate evacuation is required, it is important that suitable routes have been previously defined. These situations can happen especially when buildings are crowded, making the occupants have a very high vulnerability and can be trapped if they do not evacuate quickly and safely. However, in most cases, routes are considered based just on their proximity or short distance to the exit areas, and evacuation simulations that include more variables are not performed. This work aims to propose a methodology for building's indoor evacuation activities under the premise of processing simulation scenarios in multi-agent environments. In the methodology, importance indexes of simplified and validated geometry data from a BIM (Building Information Modeling) are considered as heuristic input data in a proposed algorithm. The algorithm is based on AP-Theta* pathfinding and collision avoidance machine learning techniques. It also includes conditioning variables such as the number of people, speed of movement as well as reaction ability of the agents that influence the evacuation times. Moreover, collision avoidance is applied between people or with objects along the route. The simulations using the proposed algorithm are tested in NetLogo for diverse scenarios, showing feasible evacuation routes and calculating evacuation times in a multi-agent environment. The experimental results are obtained by applying the method in a study case and demonstrate the level of effectiveness of the algorithm, and the influence of the conditioning variables analyzed together when performing safe evacuation routes.

  • This paper analyzed the programming education specialized lessons presented in two types of elementary school mathematics textbooks according to the revised Japanese curriculum in 2017. First, this paper presented in detail how each activity is connected to Korean mathematics areas, what elements of mathematics can be learned through programming education, how each activity is structured, and how the actual programming according to the textbook activities is structured. In Japanese textbooks, geometry and measurement areas were presented the most among Korean mathematics content areas, and mathematical elements such as sequences, rules, and algorithms were most implemented for learning. Digital learning tools that make up actual programming present more elements than those presented in the textbooks and are presented in great detail so that students can do actual programming. Lastly, in blocks, motion, control, and calculation blocks were used a lot. Based on these research results, this study provides implications when conducting programming-related education in Korea.
