Ultimate flexural buckling strength of cylindrical steel shells for the wind turbine tower structure was investigated by applying the geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element method. The effects of initial imperfection, radius to thickness ratio, and type of steel on the ultimate flexural strength of cylindrical shell were analyzed. The flexural strengths of cylindrical shells obtained by FEA were compared with design flexural strengths specified in Eurocode 3 and AISI. The shell buckling modes recommended in DNV-RP-C202 and the out-of-roundness tolerance and welding induced imperfections specified in Eurocode 3 were used in the nonlinear FE analysis as initial geometrical imperfections. The radius to thickness ratios of cylindrical shell in the range of 60 to 210 were considered and shells are assumed to be made of SM520 or HSB800 steel.

In this work, a smart skin of multi-layer structure is designed and manufactured. Through the compression test, the characteristic of smart skin behavior was examined. We have predicted stress of each layer and the first failed layer of the smart skin structure by using MSC/NASTRAN. The finite element model was verified by comparing measured data from the compression test and result from the geometrically linear/non-linear analysis. The finite element model was used for obtaining design data from the parametric study. It was confirmed that shear moduli of honeycomb core affect the buckling load of smart skin where shear deformation was considerable.

For non-linear analysis of stiffened shell structures, the total Lagrangian formulation is presented based upon the degenerated shell element. Geometrically correct formulation is developed by updating the direction of normal vectors and taking into account second order rotational terms in the incremental displacement field. Assumed strain concept is adopted in order to overcome shear locking phenomena and to eliminate spurious zero energy mode. The post-buckling behaviors of stiffened shell structures are traced by modeling the stiffener as a shell element and considering general transformation between the main structure and the stiffener at the connection node. Numerical examples to demonstrate the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed shell element are presented and compared with references' results.
The objective of this study is to perform extensive parametric studies of the lateral-torsional buckling of short 1-beams under repeated loadings, and to gain a further insight into the lateral-torsional beam buckling problem. A one-dimensional geometrically (fully) nonlinear beam model is used, which includes superposed infinitesimal transverse warping deformation in addition to finite torsional warping deformation. A multiaxial cyclic plasticity model is also implemented to better represent cyclic metal plasticity in conjunction with a consistent return mapping algorithm. The general response for the lateral-torsional buckling of short I-beams under repeated loadings is examined through several parametric studies around the standard case : the material yield strength, the yield plateau, the strain hardening, the kinematic hardening, the residual stresses, the load eccentricity with respect to the shear center, the height of the load with respect to the cross-section of the beam, the location of the load along the length of the beam, the dimensions of the cross-section of the beam and the fixity of the supported end remote from the load.
The buckling capacity of a radially retractable hybrid grid shell in the closed position was investigated in this paper. The geometrically non-linear elastic buckling and elasto-plastic buckling analyses of the hybrid structure were carried out. A parametric study was done to investigate the effects rise-to-span ratio, beam section, area and pre-stress of cables, on the failure load. Also, the influence of the shape and scale of imperfections on the elasto-plastic buckling loads was discussed. The results show that the critical buckling load is reduced by taking account of material non-linearity. Furthermore, increasing the rise-to-span ratio or the cross-section area of steel beams notably improves the stability of the structure. However, the cross section area and pre-stress of cables pose negligible effect on the structural stability. It can also be found that the hybrid structure is highly sensitive to geometric imperfection which will considerably reduce the failure load. The proper shape and scale of the imperfection are also important.
An investigation is made in the present work on the post-buckling and geometrically nonlinear behaviors of moderately thick perfect and imperfect rectangular plates made-up of functionally graded materials. Spectral collocation approach based on Legendre basis functions is developed to analyze the functionally graded plates while they are subjected to end-shortening strain. The material properties in this study are varied through the thickness according to the simple power law distribution. The fundamental equations for moderately thick rectangular plates are derived using first order shear deformation plate theory and taking into account both geometric nonlinearity and initial geometric imperfections. In the current study, the domain of interest is discretized with Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto nodes. The equilibrium equations will be obtained by discretizing the Von-Karman's equilibrium equations and also boundary conditions with finite Legendre basis functions that are substituted into the displacement fields. Due to effect of geometric nonlinearity, the final set of equilibrium equations is nonlinear and therefore the quadratic extrapolation technique is used to solve them. Since the number of equations in this approach will always be more than the number of unknown coefficients, the least squares technique will be used. Finally, the effects of boundary conditions, initial geometric imperfection and material properties are investigated and discussed to demonstrate the validity and capability of proposed method.
Lateral bracing has long been used in design practice to enhance the carrying capacity of the lateral buckling of the beam. Many factors, critically important to lateral bracing performance, do not appear in design formulas. Some of these factors are discussed in this study for the application to short I - beams under repeated loadings through parametric studies with an analytical model : the brace location along the length of the beam, the height of the bracing above the shear center of the beam, and the strength and stiffness of the brace. The parametric studies are carried out using a propped cantilever arrangement, and also using a geometrically (fully) nonlinear beam model for the brace as well as the beam to capture the system buckling. An idealized bracing system is configured to restrain lateral motion, but not rotation. A multiaxial cyclic plasticity model is also implemented to better represent cyclic metal plasticity in conjunction with a consistent return mapping algorithm.
This paper investigates the variation of post-buckling behaviours of 2-dimensional shallow arch type truss after sizing optimization. The mathematical programming technique is used to produce the optimum member size of 2D arch truss against a central point load. Total weight of structure is considered as the objective function to be minimized and the displacement occurred at loading point and member stresses of truss are used as the constraint functions. The finite difference method is used to calculate the design sensitivity of objective function with respect to design variables. The postbuckling analysis carried out by using the geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis code ISADO-GN. It is found to be that there is a huge change of post-buckling behaviour between the initial structure and optimum structure. Numerical results can be used as useful information for future research of large spatial structures.

Two way grid single-layer domes are of great advantage in fabrication and construction because of the simple fact that they have only four members at each junction. But, from a point of view of mechanics, the rectangular latticed pattern gives rise to a nonuniform rigidity-distribution in the circumferential direction. If the equivalent rigidity is considered in the axial direction of members, the in-plane equivalent shearing rigidity depends only on the in-plane bending rigidity of members and its value is very small in comparison to that of the in-plane equivalent stretching rigidity. It has a tendency to decrease buckling -strength of dome considerably by external force. But it is possible to increase buckling strength by the use of roofing covering materials connected to framework. In a case like this, shearing rigidity of roofing material increases buckling strength of the overall structure and can be designed economically from the viewpoint of practice. Therefore, the purpose of this paper, in Lamella dome and rectangular latticed dome that are a set of 2-way grid dome, is to clarify the effects of roofing covering materials for increasing of buckling strength of overall dome. Analysis method is based on FEM dealing with the geometrically nonlinear deflection problems. The conclusion were given as follows: 1. In case of Lamella domes which have nearly equal rigidity in the direction of circumference, the rigidity of roofing covering materials does not have a great influence on buckling-strength, but in rectangular latticed domes that has a clear periodicity of rigidity, the value of its buckling strength has a tendency to increase considerably with increasing rigidity of roofing covering materials 2. In case of rectangular latticed domes, as rise-span-ratio increases, models which is subjected to pressure -type-uniform loading than vertical-type-uniform loading are higher in the aspects of the increasing rate of buckling- strength according to the rate of shear reinforcement rigidity, but in case of Lamella dome, the condition of loading and rise-span-ratio do not have a great influence on the increasing rate of buckling strength according to the rate of shear reinforcement rigidity.
Resisting strength of ring-stiffened cylindrical steel shell under uniform external pressure was evaluated by geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element method. The effects of shape and amplitude of geometric initial imperfection, radius to thickness ratio, and spacing of ring stiffeners on the resisting strength of ring-stiffened shell were analyzed. The resisting strength of ring-stiffened cylindrical shells made of SM490 obtained by FEA were compared with design strengths specified in Eurocode 3 and DNV-RP-C202. The shell buckling modes obtained from a linear elastic bifurcation FE analysis were introduced in the nonlinear FE analysis as initial geometric imperfections. The radius to thickness ratios of cylindrical shell in the range of 250 to 500 were considered.
