  • In this paper, we propose a new hand shape recognition algorithm based on the geometric features using the convex-hull from the depth image acquired by Kinect system. Kinect is a camera providing a depth image and user's skeleton information and used for detecting hand region. In the proposed algorithm, hand region is detected in a depth image acquired by Kinect and convex-hull of the region is found. Boundary points caused by noise and unnecessary points for recognition are eliminated in the convex-hull that changes depending on hand shape. Hand shape is recognized by the sum of internal angle of a polygon that is matched with convex-hull reconstructed with selected boundary points. Through experiments, we confirm that proposed algorithm shows high recognition rate not only for five models but also those cases rotated.

  • In this paper based on geometric optics and geometric modeling aspheric surface of the side mirror mold with dead angle reduced have been designed and machined in a CNC machining center, Surface roughness of the mold was evaluat-ed by usin the surface shaping system. Surface generating simulation of a ball endmill process is investigated. Through the simulation based on the surface-shaping system 3-D engineered surfaces and properties of engineered surfaces are obtained, Computer simulation provides the effective working conditions through the prediction of geometric properties of engineered surfaces. The rear view mirror and room mirror play important role on the safe driving condition as a observation of environment but the rear view mirror can not provide complete information of driving environments due to the existence of the dead angle. The analysis on the shape of formed mirror shows that the proposed me? improves range of a driver's sight.

  • Usually triangular patches are used to transfer geometric shape in Rpaid Prototyping CAM system. STL, a list of triangles, is de facto in RP industry. Because STL has no topology data, it can cause errornous results. So, STL should be verified before using. After adding support structures to anchor the part to the platform and to prevent sagging or distortion, slicing and layer by layer manufacturing process are done. But triangular patch is surface model and cannot provide dufficient information on geometry in the above processes. So, geometric modeling is necessary in verifying STL, adding support structures, and slicing. It is natural that triangle based modeling is the best when traingular patches are used as input. Considering support structures, solid and faces coexist in RP process. Therefore non-manifold modeler is required. In this study, triangle based non-manifold geometric modeling is proposed for RP system consitent with STL input.

  • In the cursive handwriting recognition process, script trajectory segmentation and modeling represent an important task for large or open lexicon context that becomes more complicated in multi-writer applications. In this paper, we will present a developed system of Arabic online handwriting modeling based on graphemes segmentation and the extraction of its geometric features. The main contribution consists of adapting the Fourier descriptors to model the open trajectory of the segmented graphemes. To segment the trajectory of the handwriting, the system proceeds by first detecting its baseline by checking combined geometric and logic conditions. Then, the detected baseline is used as a topologic reference for the extraction of particular points that delimit the graphemes' trajectories. Each segmented grapheme is then represented by a set of relevant geometric features that include the vector of the Fourier descriptors for trajectory shape modeling, normalized metric parameters that model the grapheme dimensions, its position in respect to the baseline, and codes for the description of its associated diacritics.

  • A collision query determines the intersection between given objects, and is used in computer-aided design and manufacturing, animation and simulation systems, and physically-based modeling. Bounding volume hierarchies are one of the simplest and most widely used data structures for performing collision detection on complex models. In this paper, we present hierarchy of oriented rounded bounding volume for fast proximity queries. Designing hierarchies of new bounding volumes, we use to combine multiple bounding volume types in a single hierarchy. The new bounding volume corresponds to geometric shape composed of a core primitive shape grown outward by some offset such as the Minkowski sum of rectangular box and a sphere shape. In the experiment of parallel close proximity, a number of benchmarks to measure the performance of the new bounding box and compare to that of other bounding volumes.

  • This paper proposes an error compensation method that improves accuracy with geometry information of injection molding parts. Geometric information can give an improved accuracy in reverse engineering. Measuring data can not lead to get accurate geometric model, including errors of physical parts and measuring machines. Measuring data include errors which can be classified into two types. One is molding error in product, the other is measuring error. Measuring error includes optical error of laser scanner, deformation by probe forces of CMM and machine error. It is important to compensate these in reverse engineering. Least square method(LSM) provides the cloud data with a geometry compensation, improving accuracy of geometry. Also, the functional shape of a part and design concept can be reconstructed by error compensation using geometry information.

  • A method for estimating the cylindrical shape of a sound radiator is presented. It assumes that sound field can be measured by a linear array. A sound field, due to the radiator vibrating with uniform velocity, can be determined by its shape, size, and orientations. Measured data also can be varying from the array's position. To predict the shape of radiators from these measured data, mathematical relation between geometric parameter and measured information is needed. Assume that a radiator is cylinder, the magnitude and phase of measured pressure is related with the length and diameter of radiator, respectively. In this paper, the method for estimating length and shape of a finite cylinder by using its radiated pressure is proposed and verified through experiment.

  • In this thesis, we propose a new 3D shape descriptor. The proposed descriptor measures geometric characteristics by using the shortest path on surfaces. The descriptor is robust against a change of local posture. We measure the geometric characteristics of 3D object through a new shape function to construct the shape distribution. The proposed shape function is the shortest path shape function. The shape function measures the distance between two points on the surface of a 3D object. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method, compared with the previous method. The precision of retrievals improved by 23% in the case of articulated objects and is improved by 12% in the case of general objects.

  • The majority parasitic bee mites of Thailand in genus Tropilaelaps are infesting colonies of native bees (Apis dorsata) and introduced bees (A. mellifera). The investigation aims to study morphological and genetic variation of Tropilaelaps mites infected different hosts. Adult mites were collected from honey bee brood throughout Thailand. Traditional and geometrical morphometrics were measured on photograph by using TPS program. Additional, COI gene variations were examined by PCR-RFLP and nucleotides sequencing. Tree of mites relationships were constructed by NJ and MP assumptions. Morphometric results indicated T. mercedesae were major species infesting on A. dorsata and A. mellifera. Mophological variation represented at anal and epigynial plate, which the shape of the anal plate apex margin has been key character to identify between T. mercedesae (bell to blunt shape) and T. koenigerum (pear shape). However, the discriminant analysis suggested that geometric results were potential to classify Thai Tropilaelaps populations from different hosts better than traditional morphometric. Otherwise, PCR-RFLP clearly detected the site of Dra I and Xba I digestion of Thai Tropilaelaps morphotypes. The COI sequences of T. koenigerum were founded infesting only A. dorsata in Thailand and four sequences that related to the Thai T. mercedesae morphotypes. The NJ and MP tree were clearly classified Thai Tropilaelaps species which were suggested both from morphological and molecular analysis. This information might be basically of taxonomic status, but this should have implication for controlling these mites in Thailand and other countries.

  • Despite the availability of 3D CAD systems, the designers in shipyards still use 2D CAD systems because of the need to produce drawings rapidly and a shortage of labor. The design information of ship structure contained in 2D drawings is represented by symbols that are well known among designers in shipyard. The shapes of symbols are recognized by analysis of experienced and knowledgeable designers. We propose a method for automatic recognition of 2D symbols and extraction of design information from the midship drawings. The shape and rationale of 20 symbols used in ship design have been analyzed, and symbols have been classified according to the analysis. Based on the classified symbols, the developed system recognizes the symbols expressed in 2D drawings. The meaningless geometric shape is translated into the design information including designer's intents. The extracted design data can be applied to the downstream design process in shipyards, and the 3D ship model can be automatically created.
