  • [1] There are systematical errors associated with ionospheric influence in retrieving key atmospheric parameters from radio occultation (RO) soundings. In order to obtain better-quality retrievals, we develop a new method, hereafter called National Central University Radio Occultation (NCURO) scheme, to reduce the ionospheric influence. The excess phase is divided into two parts, namely geometric excess length and path excess length (excess length along ray path due to refractivity effect). An excess phase equation is presented and implemented in the NCURO scheme Whose performance is evaluated through comparisons with model simulation and experimental data. The model simulation is based on the use of the ionospheric model 002001 and atmospheric model NRLMSISE-OO. Results show that the NCURO scheme significantly reduces the ionospheric influence at altitudes above 70 km as does the scheme presented in the literature, and provides better corrections for the atmospheric profile. • According to recent Korea Electric Power Company report, yearly distribution line brass cramp bolts failure summed up to 4,400 cases emerging as one of main local break-down causes. Naturally, the need for the investigation was proposed To determine the root cause of the cramp bolt failures, mechanical and metallurgical investigation were performed for 90 samples which collected from various sites. For the understanding of the geometric characteristics, stress distribution was evaluated by CAE program and proof load of each bolts was tested. The SEM&EDS was used for metallurgical investigation. Through the investigation, the root causes of failures were confirmed. All damaged bolts showed intergrannular fracture mode and the all fractured bolt showed ß phase morphology contrast to the a&ß mixture morphology of the non-damaged samples. Additionally, EDS analysis confirmed the existence of lead rich layer on grain boundaries.

  • With the wide use of mobile phones, a paging signal by a sound transducer acts as an environmental noise on many occasions, thus necessitating an alternative paging signal by a vibration motor. Conventional vibration motors employ three-phase windings with mechanical brushes for commutation. In this paper, a new one-phase brushless and sensorless vibration motor is introduced utilizing digital signal processor chips in cell-phones. For electromagnetic field analysis, two-dimensional modeling can be implemented to determine the back electromotive force using axisymmetric boundary conditions. Geometric design parameters, such as coil pitch and magnet pitch. are considered for performance optimization. Through the experiments, it is shown that the proposed design has the equivalent performance with reduced number of parts, thus enhancing manufacturing productivity and reducing manufacturing cost.

  • The characteristics of traveling-wave electrodes for high-frequency electroptic integrated devices are described from the view point of improvement of phase-matching based on the conformal mapping method. Specific calculations of the characteristic impedance, effective microwave index, and eletrode loss for asymmetric coplanar strip(ACPS) and coplanar waveguide(CPW) electrode structures are presented as a function of the geometric electrode parameters including the electrode thickness and buffer layer thickness. 5-10(x10S0-6Tm) thick Au-ACPS electrodes were successfully fabricated by electroplating and ECR etcher. The improvement of modulation bandwidth can be theoretically observed from the combination of electrode and buffer layer thickness.

  • A level-set method is developed for computation of drop motions in various engineering applications. Compared with the volume-of-fluid method based on a non-smooth volume-fraction function, the LS method can calculate an interface curvature more accurately by using a smooth distance function. Also, it is straightforward to implement for two-phase flows in complex geometries unlike the VOF method requiring much more complicated geometric calculations. The LS method is applied to simulation of inkjet process, thin film pattering and droplet collisions.

  • Insight into behaviour of pedestrians as welt as tools to assess passenger flow condition is important in such instances as planning and geometric design of railway station under regular and safety-critical circumstances. Algorithm for passenger flow analysis based on DEM (Discrete Element Method) is newly developed. There are lots of similarity between particle-laden two phase flow and passenger flow. The velocity component of 1st phase corresponds to the unit vector of calculation cell, each particle to passenger, volume fraction to population density and the particle velocity to the walking velocity, etc. And, the walking velocity of passenger is also represented by the function of population density. Key algorithms are developed to determine the position of passenger, population density and numbering to each passenger. To verify the effectiveness of new algorithm, passenger flow analysis for the basic models of railway station is conducted.

  • This paper deals with cost reduction design of a single-phase line-start permanent magnet (LSPM) motor. The characteristic analysis according to the change of quantity of permanent magnet(PM) is examined by d-and q-axis equivalent circuit. The motor parameters which are satisfied with efficiency and maximum torque are determined by the characteristic map obtained by d-and q-axis equivalent circuit analysis. And then the geometric shape design using optimization methodology is performed by finite element method (FEM).

  • In this study we propose an unsteady I-dimensional model of an iron ore sintering bed with multiple solid phases, which confers a phase on each solid material. This model contains coke combustion, limestone decomposition, gaseous reaction, heat transfers between each phase, and geometric changes of the solid particles. Simulation results are compared with the limited experimental data set of various coke contents and air supply rates. Effect of the coke diameter is also evaluated. They predict the experimental results well and show applicabilities to the various system of the fuel bed with various solid materials.

  • The probability distribution of the repair process should be determined to choose the optimal spare level of a weapon system with a queueing model. Though most weapon systems have a multi-step repair process, previous studies use the exponential distribution for the multi-step repair process. But the PH distribution is more appropriate for this case. We utilize the PH distribution on a queueing model and solve it with MGM(Matrix Geometric Method). We derive the optimal spare level using the PH distribution and show the difference of results between the PH and exponential distribution.
