The slope stability of waste landfill has been a problem in domestic and foreign countries. Waste landfills are being constructed in a reclaimed land or mountainous area. But most of these places are consisted of steep slope and hence it is necessary to use the geosynthetic liners in there. The large size direct shear test(30cm x 30cm) equipment was used to determine the interface friction angles between CCLs and soil & geomembranes. The centrifuge model tests were performed to investigate the slope stability with considering various geosynthetic liners conditions and degree of slope. The results of centrifuge model test indicate that the degree of saturation of GCL, roughness of geomembrane, and slope of landfill have greatly influenced on the slope stability of solid waste landfill.

This paper deals with a case study on a unique slope failure in a liner system of a municipal solid waste containment facility during construction because the sliding interface is not the geomembrane/compacted low permeability soil liner (LPSL) but a soil/soil interface within the LPSL. From the case study, it is concluded that compaction of the LPSL should ensure that each lift is kneaded into the lower lift so a weak interface is not created in the LPSL, and the LPSL moisture content should be controlled so it does not exceed the specified value, .e.g., 3% - 4% wet of optimum, because it can lead to a weak interface in the LPSL. In addition, drainage materials should be placed over the geomembrane from the slope toe to the top to reduce the shear stresses applied to the weakest interface, and equipment should not move laterally across the slope if it is unsupported but along the slope while placing the cover soil from bottom to top.
Relationship between dynamic friction resistances and shear displacement rate, and other frictional characteristics of non-geotextile-involving geosynthetic interfaces was experimentally studied. A cyclic, displacement rate-controlled experimental setup built on a shaking table was used. The subsequent multiple rate tests showed that interfaces that do not involve geotextiles have distinct shearing characteristics that can be differentiated from the interfaces involving geotextiles. Unlike those of the geotextile-involving interfaces, shear behaviors of the interfaces involving only non-geotextiles tend to be not sensitive to shear displacement rate, and are approximately rigid-perfectly plastic.
In this paper the effect of UV (ultraviolet) exposure on HDPE (high density polyethylene)-smooth and f-PP (flexible polypropylene) geomembranes is evaluated under UVB-313 (ultraviolet wavelength 290-315 nm) exposure. Tensile property, melt flow index (MFI), oxidation induction time (OIT), both standard-OIT and high pressure-OIT and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy/attenuated total reflectance (FTIR/ATR) results are discussed. Although tensile properties of the exposed geomembrane samples remained unchanged, the depletion of antioxidants was found higher for f-PP than for HDPE geomembrane. Arrhenius model by extrapolation was used on the data to predict the antioxidant lifetime to a typical site temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. There was no significant difference between the MFI value of the virgin and UV exposed HDPE geomembrane samples but a decrease in MFI was found in f-PP geomembrane that signifies that crosslinking has occurred. From FTIR spectra, the small peak (near $1750\;cm^{-1}$) observed in the spectrum of UV exposed sample corresponds to a carbonyl (C=O) linkage, which suggests that oxidation has occurred in the polymer structure, and another new band for f-PP between 3100 and $3500\;cm^{-1}$ is attributed to a hydroxyl bond and/or hydroperoxide bond.
