  • The understanding of underground geologic structures is of great importance for the surface and subsurface constructions, prevention of natural hazards such as land-slides and subsidence, and many other areas. To get the information on the geologic conditions, many of investigations such as geologic survey, geophysical explorations, testings on the physical properties of rocks, drilling tests and logging, and groundwater surveys are usually conducted, and tremendous data are collected accordingly. In general, however, these huge amount of data are interpreted in the individual areas only. If these data are analyzed collectively, much more information on the geologic conditions can be obtained. In this study, 3D visualization of borehole logging data is attempted. Borehole logging data are obtained at the urban subsidence area. To compare the 3D logging data with other geologic and geophysical data such as resistivity tomography data, interface module was developed. The 3D visualization of logging data and the comparison with other data can be helpful for the understanding of underground geologic structures.

  • The numerical modeling and simulation have been used increasingly as tools for examining and interpreting the bulk structure and properties of materials. The use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to model the structure of materials is now both widespread and reasonably well understood. In this research, we introduced the numerical method to calculate the physico-chemical properties such as a diffusion coefficient and a viscosity of clay mineral. In this research, a series of MD calculations were performed for clay mineral and clay-water systems, appropriate to a saturated deep geological setting. Then, by using homogenization analysis (HA), the diffusion coefficients are calculated for conditions of the spatial distribution of the water viscosity associated with some configuration of clay minerals. This result of numerical analysis is quite similar to the previous experimental results. It means that the introduced numerical method is very useful to calculate the physico-chemical properties of clay minerals under various environmental conditions.

  • A geologic survey of the Bukpyeong and Pohang basins, as candidate basins for the geological storage of $CO_2$, was performed to evaluate storage capacity and security. To analyze the mechanical stability of the storage reservoir and cap rocks, we measured the porosity, seismic velocity, uniaxial strength, internal frictional angle, and Young's modulus of core samples recovered from the two basins. It is costly and sometimes impossible to conduct tests over the entire range of drill holes, and continuous logging data do not yield the mechanical parameters directly. In this study, to derive the mechanical properties of geologic formations from the geophysical logging data, we determined the empirical relations between the physical properties (seismic velocity, porosity, and dynamic modulus) and the mechanical properties (uniaxial strength, internal friction angle) of the core samples. From the comparison with our core test data, the best fits to the two basins were selected from the relations suggested in previous studies. The relations between uniaxial strength, Young's modulus, and porosity of samples from the Bukpyeong and Pohang basins are more consistent with certain rock types than with the locality of the basins. The relations between the physical and mechanical properties were used to estimate the mechanical rock properties of geologic formations from seismic logging data. We expect that the mechanical properties could also be used as input data for a modeling study to understand the mechanical instability of rock formations prior to $CO_2$ injection.

  • GIS technique was applied to identify the geotechnical characte¬ristic of subsurface in a study area, and has produced a Geotechnical Esti¬mat ion Index(GEI) map. Groundwater level, soi I depth & weathered zone, and engineering properties of soils & rocks, were incorporated in the map through GIS. EGIS(Environmental Geologic Information System), developed by ARC/INFO GIS system, was used for this work. Environmental geologic database by EGIS was verified to be effective in analysis of engineering geological properties of the subsurface. Quantitative analysis of environmental and geotechnical information enable to develop a scoring system of GEI model, which was developed through evaluation of each goelogical factor with respect to the other factors.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the origin of the terms for well-known minerals and rocks in South Korean, North Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese. All of the terms for mineral and rock have been standardized in English and Chinese, Whereas not all of the terms are standardized yet in Japanese, North Korean and South Korean. Although many Korean researchers have recognized the fact and tried to standardize the terms, most of the terms for minerals and rocks have been used without any research conducted on them, which made it impossible. The terms for minerals were mainly made based on some of 28 geologic properties: chemical composition, color, shape and material. The terms for rocks were mainly originated from some of their 30 geologic properties: mineral composition, origin of rock, material and surface. 23 of the 124 English terms were named after the names of men or location, Whereas only 3 terms were originated from a name of place in the Eastern countries. In the Eastern countries, the terms for some minerals or rocks often consist of more complex geologic properties, compared with English terms for the same ones. For the minerals with complex geological properties, in the Eastern countries, there are 28 terms on average, which is much more than 2 in English. There are 9.25 terms in average for the rocks with complex geological properties in the Eastern while only 5 terms exist in English. Some of the Korean terms are very difficult for students to recognize what they are because the terms were originated from Japanese or English terms, which were translated into Korean without consideration of Korean contexts. Therefore the terms of rocks and minerals need to be discussed about their meaning and relevance.

  • Physical and chemical weathering degrades rock, affecting its structural properties and thus the stability of stone buildings or other structures. Confocal laser scan microscopy (CLSM) is used here to observe temporal changes in the surface roughness of rock samples under simulated accelerated weathering. Samples were pressurized to 50, 55, or 70 MPa using a pressure frame, and subjected to freeze/thaw cycling controlled by a thermostat. The temperature was cycled from -20℃ to 40℃ and back. After each 20 cycles, CLSM was used to assess the change in surface roughness, and roughness factors were calculated to quantify the progression of the surface condition over time. Variations in cross-section line-roughness parameters and surface-roughness parameters were analyzed for specific parts of the sample surfaces at 5× and 50× magnification. The result reveals that the highest and lowest values of the roughness factors are changed according to elapsed time. Freezing/thawing at high pressure caused larger changes in the roughness factor than at low pressure.

  • Freeze-thaw experiments were conducted to evaluate changes in surface roughness and physical properties in samples of granite from Ilgwang and Imki mines, Korea. The temperature range in the experiments was $-20^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$, based on typical summer and winter temperatures in Korea, and the surface was observed every 20 cycles. One cycle comprised 1 hour of heating or cooling of the samples and 1 hour during which the target temperature was maintained. With increasing repetitions of the freeze-thaw experiment, porosity increased by 0.05%-0.15% in the two samples and the dry weight increased, whereas the volume of the soil and saturation weight decreased. Observations by confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) revealed that line and surface roughness parameters showed a tendency to increase and decrease, respectively, with elapsed time. Changes in surface roughness were apparent on the CLSM images.

  • Korea Stress Map database is built by integrating actual data of 1,400 in-situ stress measurements using hydraulic fracturing and overcoring method in South Korea. Korea Stress Map 2020 is presented based on the guideline proposed by World Stress Map Project. As detailed data, stress ratio and maximum horizontal stress direction distribution for each region are also presented. The dominant maximum horizontal stress direction in the Korean Peninsula is from northeast to southeast, and the magnitude of the in-situ stress is relatively distributed. There is some stress heterogeneity caused by local characteristics such as topographical and geological properties. We investigated case studies in which the in-situ stress was affected by mountainous topography, difference in rock quality of fracture zone, presence of mine or underground cavities, and geological structure of fault zone.

  • We carried out laboratory material tests on two cements (KS-1 ordinary Portland and Class G) with changing W/S (Water/Solid) and the content of fly ash in order to evaluate their physical and mechanical properties. The specimens of KS-1 ordinary Portland cement were prepared with varying W/S (Solid=cement) in weight, while those of Class G cement were prepared with changing the content of fly ash in volume but maintaining W/S (Solid=cement+fly ash). The results of the material tests show that as the W/S in KS-1 ordinary Portland cement and the content of fly ash in Class G cement increase, the properties (density, sonic wave velocity, elastic constants, compressive and tensile strengths, thermal conductivity) decrease, but porosity and specific heat increase. In addition, an increase in confining pressure and in the content of fly ash leads to plastic failure behavior of the cements. The laboratory data were then used in a stability analysis of cement sheath for which an analytical solution for computing the stress distribution induced around a cased, cemented well was employed. The analysis was carried out with varying the injection well parameters such as thickness of casing and cement, injection pressure, dip and dip direction of injection well, and depth of injection well. The analysis results show that cement sheath is stable in the cases of relatively lower injection pressures and inclined and horizontal wells. However, in the other cases, it is damaged by mainly tensile failure.
