The central aim of this paper is to identify the distributional pattern of poverty and to investigate the spatial relationship between poverty and welfare service providers in Busan, Korea. It is intended to explain how the relationship of service-dependency between impoverished people and social welfare services leads to uneven social geography. Welfare services controlled by public or private agencies may support the impoverished people in different ways, generating social outcomes. By exploiting the spatial variations in the incidence of poverty and the provisions of social welfare services, this paper is to understand the dynamics of the geography of poverty from a local scale so that it can help us understand how various governmental and nongovernmental area-based service providers are spatially uneven when they are compared to the distribution of service dependency group such as impoverished people. From this research, it is finally argued that the implications of locational interdependence between such needed groups and social welfare services for their support demand a paradigm for urban social geography that centers on the changing welfare provision structure and the linkages between population and service-provision.
The discipline of Geography is broadly concerned with the interconnections between people and the environment. Particularly, this unique human-environment relationship often can be typically reflected from, and well illustrated by, the dynamics of microstates' island environment. While Tuvaluans living on vulnerable, low-lying atolls in the Pacific are not primarily responsible for contributing to climate change, yet they are experiencing its dreadful effects. Population pressure, caused by the differences in population size, distribution, and composition, has been constantly affected by resource unavailability and environmental instability on the islands. It also represents one of our challenges in understanding the complex influence of population dynamics on the living environment. What can be learned from Tuvalu in the context of population geography and environmental geography as well as its relationship with other Pacific island microstates? What are Tuvaluans' migration responses to their atolls' environmental crisis as well as the carrying capacity scenarios related to overpopulation? What are the current living experiences and settlement situations of Tuvaluan internal and external migrants both at home and abroad? This research examines the contemporary migration literature in the context of Tuvalu's population geography, while analyzing Tuvaluan migration patterns, discourses and perspectives in relation to environmental change.
This study examines the competitiveness of urban industrial structure and its changing characteristics. Cluster analysis of Arizona towns based on economic functions revealed the changing characteristics of urban functions over time. The relationship between the changes of urban functions and industrial competitiveness was confirmed through shift-share analysis. The level of industrial specialization has become more closely related to urban size in terms of both population and employment, but the relationship between metropolitan location and specialization level is not clear. Also, it is validated that the economies of Arizona towns have become more diversified and, consequently, have tended to converge toward the state average in industrial structure over time.
Industrial agglomeration is an old theme in economic geography and many studies have been devoted to this topic. But only few have empirically looked at the time trend of industrial agglomeration. This study measured agglomeration of U.S. industries over last 29 years and measurement results indicated that industrial clustering has occurred during the study period in all study industries without a common time trend shared amongst the study industries. The agglomeration levels then were plugged in to investigate causalities, i.e. causal relations, around industrial agglomeration. Three variables were selected to see causal relations with agglomeration levels based on literatures, and our focus was given to the causality between transport network and agglomeration. Causal relation from transport to agglomeration was found in various industries and this supports the argument that the development of transportation influences industrial agglomeration. At the same time inverse and bi-directional causalities were also revealed implying more complex relationship between these two.
Military geography has been recognized a part of applied geography appeared in 1960s by the viewpoint applying geographical science technology and knowledge for war. But the contribution for war accompanying violence caused negative recognition in moral viewpoint and led stagnation of military geography's study. Therefore this paper has researched a method improving the role of military geography as a part of applied geography and considered the essential meaning of the military geography's role in the relationship between war and military sciences. Based on this consideration, this paper proposed a research direction necessary for the role contributing human development beyond the viewpoint focusing contribution for war. The result of this study confirmed the characters of the military geography's elements have two attributes contributing for war victory or improving human life quality. Military geography has laid emphasis for usability to war contribution until now and caused unsatisfactoriness of morality. But military geography can complement this unsatisfactoriness by the extension of the role contributing human life quality. This study could examine the possibility doing the role contributing for both war and peace as a intact science.
This empirical study researched the three major phenomena of differentiation of housing market under the large scale of new town construction in the metropolitan area, the spatial differentiation pattern of housing market due to the urban growth, and the relationship with the distribution of housing submarket and suburbanization. Yongin City, one of the most active growth cities among the metropolitan areas, is optimal place to investigate the spatial differentiation pattern of the housing submarket on the microscopic scale. Furthermore, Yongin City has not only the geographical benefit but also the strong influences from institutional, social, and environmental changes. This city is divided into four housing submarkets, where to Gangnam and Boondang, Gyeongbu and Youngdong expressway has significant effects. In addition, the housing tenure and size, household structure, educational background and income levels and so on also resulted in the differentiation of the housing submarket.
Geographic Information System(GIS) deal with data which can potentially be useful for a wida range of applications. However, the information needs of each application usually vary, specially in resolution, detail level, and representation style, as defined in the modeling phase of the geographic database design. To be able to deal with such diverse needs, the GIS must after features that allow multiple representations for each geographic entity of phenomenon. This paper addresses the problem of formal definition of the objects and their relationships on geographical information systems. The geographical data is divided in two main classes: geo-objects and geo-fields, which describe discrete and continuous representations of spatial reality. I will study the classes and the roles of relationships over geo-fields, geo-objects and nongeo-objects. Therefore, this paper will contribute the efficient design of geographical class hierarchy schema by means of formalizing attribute-domains of classes.
This paper provides an empirical analysis of the effects of trust determinants on firm performance in the buyer-supplier relationships by considering warehousing firms in Busan, South Korea. We employed AVAS transformation regressions to address the limitations of linear regressions and found nonlinear relationships between firm performance and trust determinants. Specifically, "longterm and repeated interactions," "geographical proximity," and "cultures and norms of firms and formal institutions" had positive linear relationships with firm performance, and "information sharing and reciprocity" induced an increasing pattern in firm performance. Finally, "interdependence and asset specificity" and "uncertainty removal" led to a decreasing pattern in firm performance. These results suggest that the relationship between trust and firm performance is contingent on the trust determinants that are important source of trust in buyer-supplier relationships and the influence of trust determinants on firm performance varied according to their levels.

The information needed by each application can be vary, specially in resolution, detail level, application view, and representation style, as defined in the modeling phase of the geographic database design. This study analyzes actor networks in regional innovation processes with a focus on actors' activities and finds the determinants of the networks, thereby aiming to provide information useful for regional innovation policy makers. To this end, the study conducted a social network analysis of the national R&D projects data and identified the activities of innovation actors. Finding out the network determinants was QAP analysis. The study suggests three main findings as follows. First, a meaningful difference exists in characteristics of innovation activity by region. Second, the network of innovation actors meaningfully differs from region to region. The centrality of the network was found to be high in universities and businesses in Seoul and Gyeonggi, and in public research institutes in Daejeon. There are regions where all the networks of innovative actors are composed of one component, while some regions are not yet established with the network. Finally, although the networks of innovation actors are influenced by the geographical proximity and the size of the R&D fund, it is notable that the previous continuous relationship forms a strong research network.
