  • The purpose of this study is to identify the problems of the present status of the Jeollanamdo's geographical name task by analyzing it and to suggest ways to improve it. For this purpose, the theoretical review including the definition of the geographical name as the subject of the study is conducted. Also, by analyzing the current structure of geographical name, the enactment and improvement of the ordinance of the committee on geographical name, and the management of committee on geographical name etc, the problems of the geographical name task are derived and suggestions for improvement are proposed. The results of this study are as follows: First, as a plan to improve the professionalism of the organization and the officer in charge of the geographical name task, this study suggests the unification of the department in charge of geographical name task, the specialization of the official in charge, and the development of training and teaching materials related to the geographic name task. Secondly, in order to improve the ordinance and the management of the committee on geographical name, this study suggests the enactment and improvement of the ordinance of committee on geographical name, the guidance and the supervision of the establishment and operation of the committee on geographic name, the simplification of procedures of establishing and changing geographical name, and enactment of geographic name a Law.

  • In this research, we propose a path-planning algorithm for an autonomous mobile robot using geographical information, under the condition that the robot moves in unknown environment. All image inputted by camera at every sampling time are analyzed and geographical elements are recognized, and the geographical information is embedded in environmental map. The geographical information was transformed into 1-dimensional evaluation value that expressed the difficulty of movement for the robot. The robot goes toward the goal searching for path that minimizes the evaluation value at every sampling time. Then, the path is updated by integrating the exploited information and the prediction on unexploited environment. We used a sensor fusion method for improving the mobile robot dead reckoning accuracy. The experiment results that confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm on the robot's reaching the goal successfully using geographical information are presented.

  • This paper is to clarify the spatial characteristics of settlements in rural area. Especially the study is viewed through the geographical language in Eumsung-Kun, which is one of typical rural settlements situated in Chung Buk. The number of geographical languages collected in Eumsung-Eup and Wonnam-Myun is 150. The geographical languages could be classified into 8 groups and 4 categories. The main results are as follows; 1) The study method by geographical language is effective to analyze the spatial organization of settlements as a living space. 2) The classification and categorization of geographical language showed clearly the formation process and spatial characteristics of settlements.

  • This paper is to research the geographical language and location characteristics of 126 rural settlements focused on Miwon Myeon in the Integrated Cheongju City. The main results are as follows : Firstly, the geographical languages of 126 settlements are classified and categorized in the order of nature (91units, 72.22%), manmade and location related(35 Units, 27.78%). The geographical languages of nature, quite much in comparison with the others, are also classified into 39 'mountain', 46 'valley', and 6 'stream' units in location characteristics. Secondly, the geographical languages of nature have 46 'valley' units, much in comparison with the others. The open circular valleys are extended from Miwon Ri of town center to Gubang Ri along route 19. The closed valleys are placed in the west and north band of town center with a background of mountain range. The 46 'valley' units are distributed widely throughout these places. Thirdly, The geographical languages of 39 'valley' units except original 7 'valley' units are categorized with the secondary 'mountain'(rock and topography related), 'stream', 'manmade', and 'location related'. And so in considering the location characteristics of rural settlements, we will have to grasp the another meaning of the geographical language.

  • The geographical knowledge is composed of academic geographical knowledge, school geographical knowledge, applied geographical knowledge and popular geographical knowledge according to the diverse social need and demand. And the geographical knowledge has developed through the knowledge circulation system, which is connected to knowledge production, delivery, application and to reproduction among these knowledge fields. The discontinuity of knowledge circulation can lead to crisis of geographical whole. Therefore, for sustainable development of geography, it is necessary to firmly build a virtuous circulation system of geographical knowledge which is linked to a knowledge production and accumulation by an academic geography, knowledge delivery by a school geography, knowledge social application by an applied geography, knowledge application in everyday life by a popular geography and knowledge reproduction by an academic geography.

  • Geographical indications are signs which identify a good as originating in the territory of a specific country, region, or locality, where the quality, reputation or other characteristics of the product is essentially attributable to its geographical origin. Korea has implemented geographical indication system through its Agricultural Product Quality Control Act since 1999. This research analyzes the impacts and implications of geographical indications on a particular cultural industry in a region using a case study of Boseong green tea which is the first product that was officially registered as a geographical indication in Korea. The results show that the geographical indication has contributed to the promotion of green tea industry in Boseong not only through increase of production but also through development of tourism. The implication is that a geographical indication can be used as an effective method to cope with trade liberalization in terms of agricultural policy. Another implication is that a geographical indication provides an efficient tool for place marketing.

  • Recently some researchers started to discuss the fundamental limitations of geographical innovation clusters. With the rapid development of information and telecommunication technologies, a new concept of virtual innovation cluster is emerging in the advanced countries an alternative to overcome the limitations of geographical clusters. In this context, this study is designed as a pilot study to verify limitations of and issues with geographical innovation cluster through a survey and review the possible application of virtual innovation cluster as an alternative to geographical innovation cluster. Topics covered in this study include; 1) What are the limitations and/or issues with geographical clusters? 2) Can these limitations of and issues with geographical innovation cluster be overcome with virtual innovation cluster? 3) What is the government policy direction to ensure effective utilization of virtual innovation clusters? To answer these questions, this study adopted various research techniques including literature reviews, surveys, case studies, and expert interviews. Especially, a survey was conducted to diagnose the limitations of geographical innovation cluster policy and to understand the possibility of applying virtual innovation clusters. Finally, the significances and limitations of the study are discussed.
