In order to study the optimum depth for the soil geochemical exploration in the area which is affected by agricultural activities and waste disposal of metal mine, the soil samples were sampled from the B layer of residual soil and vertical 7 layers up to 250 cm in the rice field and 3 layers up to 90 cm in the ordinary field. They were analyzed for Au, As, Cu, Pb and Zn by AAS, AAS-graphite furnace and ICP. To investigate the proper depth for the soil sampling in the contaminated area, the data were treated statistically by applying correlation coefficient, factor analysis and trend analysis. It is conclude that soil geochemical exploration method could be applied in the farm-land and a little contaminated area. The optimum depth of soil sampling is 60 cm in the ordinary field, and 150~200 cm in the rice field. Soil sampling in the area of a huge mine waste disposal is not recommendable. Plotting of geochemical map with factor scores as a input data shows a clear pattern compared with the map of indicater element such as As or Au. The second or third degree trend surface analysis is effective in inferring the continuity of vein in the area where the outcrop is invisible.

The objective of this study is to investigate geochemical characteristics of mine wastes including tailings in various abandoned mines in Korea. Tailings and wastes were sampled in and around 39 metalliferous mines, and analysed heavy metal concentrations including Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn extracted by 0.1N HCl and aqua regia by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Measurements of paste pH and lime requirement were carried out to examine a general geochemical characteristics of the materials. Lots of mine wastes were characterized by very low pH values of 2 to 4 and high lime requirement to control neutralization of the wastes. In addition, elevated levels of heavy metals were found in various mine wastes extracted by both 0.lN HCl and aqua regia. Because the mine wastes can be dispersed into the downstream by clastic movement and wind-blow, it is necessary to control the materials with a proper method for their reclamation.
Natural geological and environmental processes reflect to element abundances in geological materials on the surface. This study aims to elucidate a possibility of geostatistical application to differentiate geochemical anomalies affected by anthropogenic and geogenic factors. A regional geochemical map was produced using 'inverse distance weight interpolation' method for analytical results of stream sediments «150 11m) which were collected from 2,290 first- to second-order streams over the whole Gyeonggi Province. The Jurassic granitic batholith in the southeastern province was selected as a target for the geostatistical examination. Factor analysis was conducted using 22 elements for stream sediments from 445 drainage basins over the granitic body. Co, Cr, Sc, MgO, Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$, V, and Ni were grouped with high correlation coefficients and the depletion of the components may reflect the whole-rock chemistry of the granite. Regression analysis was done using Co, Cr, and Sc as dependent variables and other six components as independent variables, and the results were drawn as maps. The maps acquired generally show quite similar distribution patterns with those of concentrations of each variable. The similarity in the spatial patterns between the two maps indicates that the application of regression statistics can be valid for the interpretation of regional geochemical data. However, some components show local discrepancies which may be influenced by secondary factors regardless of the basement lithology. The regression analysis may be effective in extracting local geochemical anomalies which may reflect rather anthropogenic pollutions than geogenic influences.
This study investigates the relationship between the geochemical maps and the gold-silver deposit locations. Geochemical maps of 21 elements, which are published by KIGAM, locations of gold-silver deposits, and 1:1,000,000 scale geological map of Korea are utilized far this investigation. Pixel size of the basic geochemical maps is 250m and these data are resampled in 1km spacing for the statistical analyses. Relationship between the mine location and the geochemical data are investigated using bayesian statistics and decision tree algorithms. For the bayesian statistics, each geochemical maps are reclassified by percentile divisions which divides the data by 5, 25, 50, 75, 95, and $100\%$ data groups. Number of mine locations in these divisions are counted and the probabilities are calculated. Posterior probabilities of each pixel are calculated using the probability of 21 geochemical maps and the geological map. A prediction map of the mining locations is made by plotting the posterior probability. The input parameters for the decision tree construction are 21 geochemical elements and lithology, and the output parameters are 5 types of mines (Ag/Au, Cu, Fe, Pb/Zn, W) and absence of the mine. The locations for the absence of the mine are selected by resampling the overall area by 1 km spacing and eliminating my resampled points, which is in 750m distance from mine locations. A prediction map of each mine area is produced by applying the decision tree to every pixels. The prediction by Bayesian method is slightly better than the decision tree. However both prediction maps show reasonable match with the input mine locations. We interpret that such match indicate the rules produced by both methods are reasonable and therefore the geochemical data has strong relations with the mine locations. This implies that the geochemical rules could be used as background values oi mine locations, therefore could be used for evaluation of mine contamination. Bayesian statistics indicated that the probability of Au/Ag deposit increases as CaO, Cu, MgO, MnO, Pb and Li increases, and Zr decreases.

In this study, we offered the results of geophysical and geochemical survey on the municipal waste disposal area to delineate the size and extent of leachate contamination. Preliminary to intensive geochemical investigation, we performed two geophysical methods to characterize the survey area. Electromagnetic (EM) and magnetic method were used far site investigation. From the EM method, we can get the information of soil conductivity directly related to the leachate of the contaminations and from magnetic anomalies we can find the boundary of landfill which is not identified on the surface due to soil capping. The results of geophysical survey were well matched to those of geochemical method carried out inside and near the landfill. Electric conductivity (EC) of the groundwater sampled from low resistivity anomaly region of EM result was higher than background value and the border estimated from the magnetic survey showed good agreement with that estimated from the soil gas detection survey.
The geological information analysis based on spatial statistical techniques have been studied in relation to mineral exploration. The applicability of outlier detection using moving-window statistics and directional cross-variography analysis have been verified by using geochemical data sets surveyed in the Taebaek area for mineral exploration. The directional variogram analysis has been basically known as a geostatistical method for spatial continuity measures. In this study, the application of this proposed method was extended to measure spatial correlation or similarity problems between two geochemical elements. For the appraisal of the usefulness of this scheme, five kinds of variogram functions were computed for original data and revised data, obtained by removing outliers detected by moving-window statistics and the results were compared. It is concluded that these advanced spatial statistical methods at the interpretation stage of spatial similarity provide us with valuable quantitative results as decision-supporting information for regional mineral exploration task.
The rare earth element(REE)s play an important role in understanding of rock formation and evolution because of their similar geochemical behaviors. Sm and Nd are more useful than other REEs because Sm-Nd isotopic system has important applications for geochemical interpretation like age dating and crustal evolution. These studies require a chromatographic technique for Sm and Nd separation from the geological samples. Ln-resin method using 0.25 M HCl as the eluent is widely used for Nd separation. However, this technique has a disadvantage of the poor elemental selectivity that the Nd fraction contains Ce as a tailing of the previous fraction. This technical report is a comparison study on the effect of eluent concentration between 0.25 M HCl and 0.15 M HCl on the separation of Nd with Ln-resin method for improving the technique of Nd separation. The results showed that the separation of Ce and Nd using 0.15M HCl as the eluent was not effective compared to the separation using 0.25 M HCl. In this experiment, we could confirm that the dilution of eluent might not be effective on the high purity separation of Nd with Ln-resin method.
Various studies have been done to improve the properties of the steel by adding boron to the steel. Some studies have reported on the analysis of the boron in steel by AAS (atomic absorption spectrometry), ICP-OES(inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry), ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry). The volatile loss of boron of steel in sample digestion and the separation procedure for avoiding matrix effect by high concentration of iron are difficulties for determination of boron in steel. The method to determine boron in steel by ICP-MS was developed without volatilization of boron in sample digestion step with $HNO_3-NH_4HF_2$ digestion method, and the additional separation process for avoiding matrix effect. Complete decomposition of steel with $HNO_3-NH_4HF_2$ digestion method, and boron determination by ICP-MS in the matrix of high concentration of iron were possible. Quantitative recoveries of boron in certified standard steel by new method in this study were 103 to 111%, and the relative standard deviation is less than 5%. The method detection limit was $1.17{\mu}g/g$.
To properly manage and remediate groundwater contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons such as trichloroethylene (TCE), it is necessary to assess natural attenuation processes of contaminants in the aquifer along with investigation of contamination history and aquifer characterization. This study evaluated natural attenuation processes of TCE at an industrial site in Korea by delineating hydrogeochemical characteristics along the flow path of contaminated groundwater, by calculating reaction rate constants for TCE and its degradation products, and by using geochemical and reactive transport modeling. The monitoring data showed that TCE tended to be transformed to cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-1,2-DCE) and further to vinyl chloride (VC) via microbial reductive dechlorination, although the degree was not too significant. According to our modeling results, the temporal and spatial distribution of the TCE plume suggested the dominant role of biodegradation in attenuation processes. This study can provide a useful method for assessing natural attenuation processes in the aquifer contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons and can be applied to other sites with similar hydrological, microbiological, and geochemical settings.
The aim of this study was to analyze limestone deposits potential using an artificial neural network and a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment to identify areas that have not been subjected to the same degree of exploration. For this, a variety of spatial geological data were compiled, evaluated and integrated to produce a map of potential deposits in the Gangreung area, Korea. A spatial database considering deposit, topographic, geologic, geophysical and geochemical data was constructed for the study area using a GIS. The factors relating to 44 limestone deposits were the geological data, geochemical data and geophysical data. These factors were used with an artificial neural network to analyze mineral potential. Each factor’s weight was determined by the back-propagation training method. Training area was applied to analyze and verify the effect of training. Then the mineral deposit potential indices were calculated using the trained back-propagation weights, and potential map was constructed from GIS data. The mineral potential map was then verified by comparison with the known mineral deposit areas. The verification result gave accuracy of 87.31% for training area.
