  • Bedrock is inhomogeneous for its genetically diverse origins and geological conditions when it forms, and especially, conglomerates and core-stones are one of these typical composite geo-materials composed of weak matrixes and strong pebbles. Mechanical properties of these composite bedrocks, like a conglomerate, generally vary depending on the mechanical properties and distributions of pebbles and the matrix. Therefore, regarding the consequence of understanding mechanical property of bedrocks in the designing slopes, tunnels, and other engineering facilities, empirical rock classification methods generally applied in the mechanical property modeling may not be suitable and rather, we may need some other classification methods, or tests more specific for these inhomogeneous composite bedrocks. This study includes a series of analyses to see elastic behaviors and modulus of composite geo-materials using homogenization theory. Forty nine case models were made for the elastic analysis with considering 5 factors such as gravel content, gravel size, strength of matrix, sorting and dip angle. The results analyzed are applicable to calculate elastic modulus of composite geo-materials as conglomerates and core-stones.

  • In this paper, the structural analysis of the Geostationary Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-2 (GEO-KOMPSAT-2) tubing system is discussed, and the structural integrity of the tubing system is assessed by comparative analysis with the results of overseas partner AIRBUS. Securing structural reliability of the tubing system is a very important key element of the propulsion system of the GEO-KOMPSAT-2 satellite. Therefore, FE modeling of the propulsion tubing was carried out directly using the CAE program, and structural analysis was performed to evaluate the stress state under launch conditions. Hoop stress, axial stress, bending stress, and torsion stress were calculated according to diverse load conditions by using pressure stress analysis, thruster alignment analysis, sine qualification load analysis, and random qualification load analysis. From the results, the Margin of Safety (MoS) of the tubing system is evaluated, and we can verify the structural integrity of the tubing system when subjected to various launch loads.

  • KARI had integrated and tested GEO satellite in cooperation with Astrium Inc., France. In the middle of integration and test, It was necessary to check GEO satellite SA(solar array) status and require electrical interface verification with bus. SA of GEO satellite have different mechanical characteristics in comparison with those of LEO satellite which was tested in KARI. LEO SA has been deployed by simple mechanical hinge system but GEO SA has been done by more complicated method. so in this paper, we designed the test configuration and analyzed the test result of solar array electrical integration of GEO satellite.

  • A radiation analysis is performed for the Ka and Ku-band transponder of the Communications and Broadcasting Satellite (CBS) that is planned for launch into the geo-synchronous orbit. A particular attention is given to calculation of Total Ionizing Dose (TID) for the mission life time of 15 + 3 years. A numerical modeling of the charged particles at the geo-synchronous orbit is undertaken. The charged particles from the modeling are then transported through the mechanical structure and component housings of the transponder. A set of locations are selected for the detailed calculation of TID. The results from the present calculation show that three-dimensional modeling of the component housings as well as the mechanical structure of the spacecraft is requisite in order to acquire a reliable calculation of TID.

  • The GFRP(Glass-Fiber Reinforced Plastic) pipe is designed to behave safely against the external forces and to secure stability of deformation and settlements of pipe, since it is laid under the ground. In this study, the evaluation for the pressure stability was carried out by performing the laboratory experiments to figure out the mechanical properties of Glass-Fiber Reinforced Plastic pipe, take a theoretical approach, and suggest the mechanical properties necessary for the analysis and design of GFRP. Numerical analysis is also conducted to evaluate on the field application through the comparison concerning relations between deformation and differential settlement in the GFRP and hume pipes when all and half sections are under the surcharge load.

  • Partially saturated permeability should be defined by the function of suction (or degree of saturation) and porosity. However, commercial software and most researchers' model often describe as the function of suction. The stability of a soil slope can be affected by both hydraulic and shear strength properties of partially saturated soils. For both studies, we generally use an uncoupled seepage analysis program Seep/W(Geo-Slope, 2007) and a series stress-deformation analysis program Sigma/W, or slope stability analysis program Slope/W. Seep/W is performed for simulations of partially saturated flow problems in non-deformable soil media. However, under real situations, the water flow processes in a deformable soil are influenced by soil skeleton movement and the pore water pressure changed due to seepage will lead to changes in stresses and to deformation of a soil. Many researchers are currently developing their models for solving coupled hydro-mechanical problems to simulate slope stability during a rainstorm. For a proper implementation in the field, the developed model should be still needed in order to achieve appropriate accuracy of the solution for coupled hydro-mechanical problems in soil slope stability. Thus, the paper presents the comparison of slope stability between uncoupled and coupled analyses of seepage and stress deformation problems.

Launch trajectory and the performance of injection at GTO was estimated using this program for several propellant options, engine types, number of engines and the location of launch site. Results of the analysis presents that the possibility of mission accomplishment by several design options using domestic launch sites and the development direction of GEO launch vehicles.

  • It is essential to comprehend coupled hydro-mechanical behavior to utilize subsurface for the recent demand for underground space usage. In this study, we developed a new simulator for numerical simulation as a tool for researching to consider the various domestic field and subsurface conditions. To develop the new module, we combined OpenGeoSys, one of the scientific software package that handles fluid mechanics (H), thermodynamics (T), and rock and soil mechanics (M) in the subsurface with FLAC3D, one of the commercial software for geotechnical engineering problems reinforced. In this simulator development, we design OpenGeoSys as a master and FLAC3D as a slave via a file-based sequential coupling. We have chosen Terzaghi's consolidation problem related to single-phase fluid flow at a saturated condition as a benchmark model to verify the proposed module. The comparative results between the analytical solution and numerical analysis showed a good agreement.

  • Recently, the improvement of mechanical and theoretical issues in geo-centrifuge test enhances the applicability and accuracy of the test. Geo-centrifuge test is appropriate to simulate the behaviors of underground structures like tunnel, since tunnel interacts with the soil and/or rock around it and the test can embody the in-situ stress conditions effectively. In this study, the seismic behaviors of twin tunnel were analyzed based on geo-centrifuge test. Flexible segment to mitigate seismic acceleration were implemented in the model with thin and thick thickness. Based on the test results, it was found that flexible segment can decrease the peak acceleration generally, however, thin flexible segment was not able to reduce peak acceleration in short-period seismic wave. Thick flexible segment was more effective in case of high bedrock acceleration condition. Additionally, 3-dimensional numerical analysis was performed to verify the characteristics of seismic behavior and the effect of flexible segment. Consequently, the numerical analysis result showed good agreement with the test result.

  • The present study developed a sequential approach-based numerical simulator for modeling coupled thermal-hydrological-mechanical (THM) processes in the ground and investigated the computational performance of the coupling analysis algorithm. The present sequential approach linked the two different solvers: an open-source numerical code, OpenGeoSys for solving the thermal and hydrological processes in porous media and a commercial code, FLAC3D for solving the geomechanical response of the ground. A benchmark test of the developed simulator was carried out using a THM problem where an analytical solution is given. The benchmark problem involves the coupled behavior (variations in temperature, pore pressure, stress, and deformation with time) of a fully saturated porous medium which is subject to a point heat source. The results of the analytical solution and numerical simulation were compared and the validity of the numerical simulator was investigated.
