  • The genus Periophthalmus collected from the west and south coasts of Korea, from 1983 to 1987 is reviewed and discussed taxonmically. Among them, Periophthalmus sp. is distinguished morphologically from P. cantonensis and other species of the genus Periophthalmus. The external features of Periophthalmus sp. are similar to those of P. cantonensis. However, it is clearly observed that Periophthalmussp. is differ from P. cantonensis in marginal band and height of 1st dorsal fin, membrane of pelvic fin, number of longitudinal scale~and number of 2nd dorsal soft rays.

  • Ten taxa of the genus Spirogyra (Zygnemataceae, Chlorophyta) in Korea were examined for morphology and taxonomic category with field as well as cultured materials: S. africana (Fritsch) Czurda, S. decimina (Muller) Kutzing, S. distenta Transeau, S. dubia Kutzing, S. ellipsospora Transeau, S. ellipsospora var. crassoidea Transeau, S. gracilis (Hassall) Kutzing, S. submajuscula Kutzing, S. peipingensis Jao and S. variformis Transeau. Features of vegetative cell and female gametangium, shape of septum, chloroplast number, sexuality, size and shape of zygospore, and ornamentation of spore wall were major characteristics used for determination of the species. All of them were described for the first time in Korea.

  • In this paper we consider all orientation-preserving ${\mathbb{Z}}_4$-actions on 3-dimensional handlebodies $V_g$ of genus g > 0. We study the graph of groups (${\Gamma}(v)$, G(v)), which determines a handlebody orbifold $V({\Gamma}(v),G(v)){\simeq}V_g/{\mathbb{Z}}_4$. This algebraic characterization is used to enumerate the total number of ${\mathbb{Z}}_4$ group actions on such handlebodies, up to equivalence.

  • A new species, Pedetontinus lineatus sp. nov., is described. The genus Pedetontinus is reported for the first time from South Korea in this study. The total number of species of Archaeognatha from Korea is eight in four genera, all of which belong to the family Machilidae. Description, remarks and biological notes of the species are given.

  • An anisogammarid amphipod, Eogammarus possjeticus (Tzvetkova, 1967), is newly recorded from Jindo Island, Korea, with a detailed description and illustrations. The species belonging to the genus Eogammarus are sharing several plesiomorphic characteristics, so they are similar to each other. However, Eogammarus possjeticus can be discriminated from congeners by the following characters combined: appendages are not fossorial, setations of antennae are weak, and the number and position of robust setae on pleonal epimera, urosomes, and telson are different from its congeners. This is the first record of the genus Eogammarus Birstein, 1933 from Korean waters.

  • A harpacticoid copepod, Sinamphiascus dominatus Mu & Gee, 2000 is re-described from the sandy bottom in off Jeju Island of Korea. The genus Sinamphiascus was established with single species, S. dominatus from the Bohai Sea, China. The main diagnostic characters of the specimen from Korea are well matched with the original description, although it has minor discrepancies including the lengths and ornamentation of setae in leg 6 of both sexes, shape of the base on furcal setae and teeth number of labrum in female. However those discrepancies are regarded to the intra-specific variations. This is the first record of genus Sinamphiascus in Korean waters.

The chromosomal analysis of Pows major, Paws after, Paws palustris and Paws vorius of the genus Paws in Korea were performed by conventional Giemsa staining method. The diploid number of four species were 2n=78-80, and there were 7 pairs of macrochromosomes and 32 or 33 pairs of microchromosomes. The 5th and Z·W-chromosomeswere distinctly different between interspecies. Probably these karyological differences were speculated by pericentric inversion in 5th chromosome and translocation in Z·W-chromosomes.

  • A new laophontid copepod species, Apolethon articulatus n. sp., is described from the estuaries and salt marshes in South Korea. Apolethon articulatus is similar to the three congeneric species currently known in sharing the character combination of the elongate first endopodal segment of leg 1 with inner seta and the expansion of second endopodal segments of legs 2-4 with decrease in the number of setae on them. However, A. articulatus differs from them by the separate exopod of female leg 5 and the armature of mandibular palp with 6 setae. Description and taxonomic accounts of the new species are presented herein with detailed illustrations and SEM micrographs. As the true identity of the rarely known genus has not been clarified yet, a revised generic diagnosis is provided with a key to the species hitherto known in the genus.

  • Sensilla on the aedeagi of 4 species under the genus Damaster were studied using scanning electron microscopy. A total of 37 types of sensilla were distinguished from the aedeagi of the species examined. The number of sensilla types was the largest in D. (Coptolabrus) smaragdinus branickii, 25, and 23 in D. (C.) jankowskii jankowskii. In D. (Acoptolabrus) gehinii gehinii and D. (Damaster) blaptoides blaptoides, 22 and 21 types of sensilla were found, respectively. External morphology and distribution patterns of sensilla were also described. The phylogenetic relationships among the species were discussed based on their distribution patterns.
