  • The risk from genetically modified (GM) plants results from the possibility of gene contamination producing adverse effects on biological diversity by introducing herbicide or insect resistance into related plants or weeds (NAS 2002). The concern about the leakage of genes from GM plants into the environment has primarily focused on pollen that could be wind-borne for long distances. During the period of fisk assessment in Japan, physical containment is applied as a measure of reducing gene flow via the dispersal of pollen from GM plants into the surrounding environment In this study, we tried to estimate the effect of physically contained greenhouse covered by 1-mm fine mesh to reduce pollen dispersal by researching cross pollination rate between non-GM yellow maize in a greenhouse and silver maize outside the greenhouse.

  • The low molecular weight zinc-binding protein metallothionein (MT) contains 32% cysteine and has been shown to efficiently scavenge hydroxyl radicals in vitro. MT expression is induced by oxidative stress and an antioxidant role for this protein has therefore been proposed. This review mainly focuses on the evidence for this role arising from studies using genetically modified animals and cells which either over-or under-express MT. Despite some considerable disparity of results in the literature, reported studies do generally support an antioxidant role. Nevertheless, oxidant stress at non-physiological treatment levels has been the preferred experimental model and there is little information about the role of MT in physiological oxidative stress Although it is presumed that the mechanism by which MT has an antioxidant effect involves oxidation of cysteinal thiols, it is possible that zinc release from MT is in itself an important signalling factor.

  • Higher agricultural commodity prices are a particular concern for food importing countries like Korea that has a very low self-sufficiency ratio. Korean people eat approximately 4.5 million metric tons of rice each year, which is met without a problem by domestic production. The domestic production of corn and soybean which are important raw materials for commercial food processing and livestock feed is only minimal. Demands of corn and soybean in Korea are approximately 7.2 million and 1.3 million metric tons per year, respectively. Since Korean consumers are reluctant to accept biotech (GM) foods, Korean food processors are fighting an up-hill battle in purchasing non-biotech (non- GM) crops which are becoming scarce.

  • To obtain direct evidence for thed involvement of C-AB13, a carrot (Daucus carota L.) homolog of VPI/Ab13, seed-specific transcription factor, in the acquisition of desiccation tolerance carrot non-embryogenic cells (NC) in which the C-AB13 gene was expressed ectopically was prepared. Non-transgenic NC, in which expression of C-AB13 was not detected, did not exhibit desiccation tolerance even after treatment with abscisic acid (ABA). In transgenic NC that expressed C-AB13, embryo-specific ABA-inducible genes (ECP genes) were expressed upon ABA-treatment. Furthermore, the transgenic NC became desiccation-tolerant upon ABA-treatment, but not tolerate desiccation without ABA-treatment. These results provide direct evidence for the involvement of C-AB13 in the ABA-induced acquisition of desiccation tolerance.

  • Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation has been widely used for the production of genetically modified transgenic plants to obtain specific desired traits. Most of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the transformation steps have been well elucidated over the years. However, a few steps, such as nuclear targeting, T-DNA integration, and Agrobacterium-plant proteins involved remain largely obscure and are still under extensive studies. This review describes the major steps involved in the molecular mechanism of Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and provides insight in the recent developments in studies on the Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation system. Some factors affecting the transformation efficiency are also briefly discussed.

  • This work was conducted to observe the housewives´ recognition about GMO products and their opinions about the development and production of GMO. Seventy eight percent of the subjects in this study were aware of GMO and GMO product which is best known to them was bean. Only 6.2% of the subjects considered GMO as safe and 42.1% did not know whether it is safe or not. Most of the subjects were unlikely to choose to purchase the GMO because of unproved safety, but many subjects were willing to purchase if the safety was informed with high reliability, even though 25.9% of the subjects were still negative. But when GMO product is offered with low price compared with ordinary products, only 24.6% were willing to purchase, showing that the safety was considered more important than the low price.

  • This paper proposes a genetically inspired adaptive clustering algorithm. The algorithm automatically discovers the actual number of clusters and efficiently performs clustering without unduly compromising cluster purity. Chromosome encoding that ensures the correct number of clusters and cluster purity is discussed. The required fitness function is desisted on the basis of modified similarity criteria and genetic operators. These are incorporated into the proposed adaptive clustering algorithm. Experimental results show the efficiency of the clustering algorithm on synthetic data sets and real world data sets.
