CEMTool is a command style design and analyzing package for scientific and technological algorithm and a matrix based computation language. In this paper, we present a compiler based approach to the implementation of the command mode generalized PDE solver in CEMTool. In contrast to the existing MATLAB PDE Toolbox, our proposed FEM package can deal with the combination of the reserved words such as "laplace" and "convect". Also, we can assign the border lines and the boundary conditions in a very easy way. With the introduction of the lexical analyzer and the parser, our FEM toolbox can handle the general boundary condition and the various PDEs represented by the combination of equations. That is why we need not classify PDE as elliptic, hyperbolic, parabolic equations. Consequently, with our new FEM toolbox, we can overcome some disadvantages of the existing MATLAB PDE Toolbox.
The genetic algorithm (GA) which is one of the popular optimum algorithm has been used to solve a variety of optimum problems. Because it need not require the gradient of objective function and is easier to find global solution than gradient-based optimum algorithm using the gradient of objective function. However optimum method using the GA and the finite element method (FEM) takes many computational time to solve the optimum structural design problem which has a great number of design variables, constraints, and system with many degrees of freedom. In order to overcome the drawback of the optimum structural design using the GA and the FEM, the author developed a computer program which can optimize frame structures by using the GA and the generalized transfer stiffness coefficient method. In order to confirm the effectiveness of the developed program, it is applied to optimum design of plane frame structures. The computational results by the developed program were compared with those of iterative design.
This paper investigates the heat equation for domains subjected to an internal source with a sharp spatial gradient. The solution is first approximated using linear finite elements, and sufficiently small time-step sizes to yield stable simulations. The main area of interest is then in the ability to approximate the solution using Generalized Finite Elements, and again explore the time-step limitations required for stable simulations. Both high order elements, as well as elements with special enrichments are used to generate solutions. When compared to linear finite elements, the high order elements deliver better accuracy at a given level of mesh refinement, but do not offer an increase in critical time-step size. When special enrichment functions are used, the solution can be approximated accurately on very coarse meshes, while yielding solutions which are both accurate and computationally efficient. The major conclusion of interest is that the significantly larger element size yields larger allowable time-step sizes while still maintaining stability of the time-stepping algorithm.
In this study, the two-dimensional generalized finite integral transform(FIT) approach was extended for new accurate thermal buckling analysis of fully clamped orthotropic thin plates. Clamped-clamped beam functions, which can automatically satisfy boundary conditions of the plate and orthogonality as an integral kernel to construct generalized integral transform pairs, are adopted. Through performing the transformation, the governing thermal buckling equation can be directly changed into solving linear algebraic equations, which reduces the complexity of the encountered mathematical problems and provides a more efficient solution. The obtained analytical thermal buckling solutions, including critical temperatures and mode shapes, match well with the finite element method (FEM) results, which verifies the precision and validity of the employed approach.
A generalized numerical approach based on the finite element method to analysis and design of hydroforming process is proposed in this paper. The special attention is focused on comparison of an implicit and an explicit finite element method widely used for hydroforming simulation. Furthermore, in order to meet the increasing real needs for prediction of forming limit, a ductile fracture criterion combined with finite element method is introduced and then applied to hydroforming process of an automobile lower m Consequently, the numerical analysis and design for hydroforming process presented here will facilitate the development and application of the tube hydrofoniung process to a new level.
A decoupling technique for simulating near-field wave motions in two-phase media is introduced in this paper. First, an equivalent but direct weighted residual method is presented in this paper to solve boundary value problems more explicitly. We applied the Green's theorem for integration by parts on the equivalent integral statement of the field governing equations and then introduced the Neumann conditions directly. Using this method and considering the precision requirement in wave motion simulation, a lumped-mass FEM for two-phase media with clear physical concepts and convenient implementation is derived. Then, considering the innate attenuation character of the wave in two-phase media, an attenuation parameter is introduced into Liao's Multi-Transmitting Formula (MTF) to simulate the attenuating outgoing wave in two-phase media. At last, two numerical experiments are presented and the numerical results are compared with the analytical ones demonstrating that the lumped-mass FEM and the generalized MTF introduced in this paper have good precision.
The multi-rigid-body matrix method (MRBMM) is a generalized modeling method for obtaining the displacements, forces, and dynamic characteristics of a compliant mechanism without performing inner-force analysis. The method discretizes a compliant mechanism of any type into flexure hinges and rigid bodies by implementing a multi-body mass-spring model using coordinate transformations in a matrix form. However, in this method, the deformations of bodies that are assumed to be rigid are inherently omitted. Consequently, it may yield erroneous results in certain mechanisms. In this paper, we present a multi-compliant-body matrix-method (MCBMM) that considers a rigid body as a compliant element, while retaining the generalized framework of the MRBMM. In the MCBMM, a rigid body in the MRBMM is segmented into a certain number of body nodes and flexure hinges. The proposed method was verified using two examples: the first (an XY positioning stage) demonstrated that the MCBMM outperforms the MRBMM in estimating the static deformation and dynamic mode. In the second example (a bridge-type displacement amplification mechanism), the MCBMM estimated the displacement amplification ratio more accurately than several previously proposed modeling methods.
Virtual machine tools have been magnified recently as manufacturers could estimate performances of machine tools before design and manufacturing of them. However, it requires much time and efforts to make FEM models and predict precision of machine tools well because machine tools are composed of many joints such as bolt joints, LM joints, rotational bearing joints and mounts. Especially, we have studied computational modeling methods of bolt joints to predict precision of machine tools well in this paper. Stiffness and damping coefficients of bolt joints are investigated and generalized with respect to fasten forces through experiments and FEM analysis. Matrix 27 element of ANSYS is used and bolt joints are simplified as square areas with 8 nodes to apply stiffness and damping simultaneously. Additionally, coordinate transformation of matrix 27 for bolt joints is induced to apply to skewed bolt joints of machine tools and evaluate it using FEM analysis.
Using the infinitesimal theory of elasticity and analytical formulation based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is presented for axisymmetric thick-walled cylinders made of functionally graded materials under internal and/or external uniform pressure. The material is assumed to be isotropic heterogeneous with constant Poisson's ratio and radially exponentially varying elastic modulus. At first, general governing equations of the FGM thick cylinders are derived by assumptions of the FSDT. Then the obtained equations are solved under the generalized clamped-clamped conditions. The results are compared with the findings of both FSDT and finite element method (FEM).
