  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess vision-related quality of life and modes of refractive error correction. We administered NEI-VFQ (National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire) to 137 subjects in two modes of refractive error correction: spectacles and contact lens wearers. The NEL-VFQ was developed to assess vision-related quality of life with respect to 1) visual symptoms 2) social function as well as difficulty with tasks and symptoms 3) economic issues and health concerns 4) psychological well-being. The NEL-VFQ was translated from English into Korean. Methods: All data were analyzed using SAS 8.0. Student's T-test was conducted to determine significant differences in each of the subscale (${\alpha}=0.05$). Result: The Peripheral Vision subscale score ($mean{\pm}SD$) was $52.2{\pm}32.7$ for the spectacle wearers, $88.6{\pm}18.1$ for contact lens wearers; the spectacle wearers' Peripheral Vision score was significantly lower than contact lens wearers (p=0.0001). There were also significant differences between two groups detected in Color Vision (p=0.001), General Vision (p=0.01) and Health Perception (p=0.01). Conclusion: Contact lens wearers and spectacle wearers were mostly high vision-related quality of life except General Vision and Health Perception. Especially, contact lens wearers were higher vision-related quality of life than spectacle wearers. Further studies on developing of good quality of contact lens will be needed to improve quality of life in ametropia.

  • This study was conducted to determine the association between quality of sleep (QOL) and the general characteristics, the health-behavioral factors, and the occupational characteristics of firefighting officers. The survey was conducted in October 2016 with a self-administered questionnaire using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) developed by Pittsburgh University, targeting 600 male firefighting officers working at five fire stations in D city. As a result, the QOL of the study subjects measured by the PSQI revealed 13.2% to be good, and 86.8% to be poor. In relation to general characteristics and health habits, the rate of the group who had poor quality sleep was significantly higher in those with a lower subjective health status, in the non-smoking group, and in the low sleep-quality group, compared to the good sleep-quality group. For occupational characteristics, the rate of those with poor quality sleep was significantly higher in groups such as the fire suppression group, the shift work group, the hard physical labor group, the group with a lower sense of satisfaction in their work, and in the group classed as unfit for the job but who were not considering quitting their jobs, compared to their respective counterparts. Multiple regression analysis revealed factors of influence with explanatory powers of 24.4% for subjective health status, alcohol use, subjective quality of sleep, career, job position, and physical labor. The results of this study suggest that the quality of sleep for firefighting officers is significantly related to general characteristics, health-behavioral characteristics, and occupational characteristics.

The subjects in this study were 117 parents and their children who resided in rural communities in the region of K. Methods : A survey was conducted with the consent of the parents from July 1 to 30, 2010. As for the survey on the children, the children who were in the lower grades were interviewed, and the upper graders filled out the questionnaires in person. A frequency analysis was carried out to find out the general characteristics of the parents and children, and x2-test was utilized to grasp the links between the general characteristics of the parents and the children's oral health care. A SPSS WIN 12.0 program was employed to analyze all the collected data. The findings of the study were as follows: Result : 1. As a result of investigating the relationship of the occupation of the parents to the children's regular dental checkup, the 71.8 percent of the entire children didn't get a dental checkup on a regular basis. The biggest percentage of the children of the self-employed parents(100%) got a regular dental checkup, and 90.9 percent of the children of the government workers did that(p<.05). 2. As a result of checking the relationship of the occupation of the parents to the children's dental-caries experiences, 39.3 percent of the whole children had no such experiences. The largest percentage of the children of the company employees(51.9%) had dental-caries experiences(p<.05). 3. Concerning the links between the academic credential of the parents and the children's toothbrushing method, the biggest percentage of the children(40.2%) brushed their teeth up and down. The largest rate of the children whose parents were high-school graduates(41.5%) brushed their teeth in that way(p<.05). 4. Regarding the links between the toothbrushing time of the parents and the children's view, 43.6 percent found their parents to take good care of their teeth to make them clean. 60 percent whose parents brushed their teeth after having breakfast and dinner took the best view(p<.001). 5. As for the oral-health education experiences of the parents and a time for the children's change of toothbrushes, 29.1 percent changed their toothbrushes every two months, and 29.1 percent did that not on a regular basis but when the bristles of their toothbrushes got bent(p<.05). Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings suggest that in order to promote children's oral health in consideration of the characteristics of their parents, children should be urged to get a regular dental checkup, and the development of oral-health education programs in which parents and children can participate together is urgently required.

  • It is recognized that one of the major issues in jail management is responding to the needs of a growing number of inmates with mental health problems. The purpose of this study was to assess the nature and severity of mental health problems among inmate population. The mental health status of 1,500 (1,337 responded) inmates of the 30 prisons located in nationwide area was examined using Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). And the scores on MMPI were examined in relation to some offender characteristics such as type of offence, treatment classification, frequence of discipline. The result indicates that the percentage of inmate population with scores over 70 on every sub-categories of the scale is higher than that of general populations reflecting high rate of deviation from average normal mental health. It seems likely that many of inmates are in need of specific mental health treatment services. The nature and severity of mental health problems varies depending on offender characteristics above mentioned. It is also notable that the inmates are heterogeneous in terms of mental health status, and that severe offences such as robbery, assault, and rape or sexual assault are highly related to the scores on 'antisocial' sub category. The study also reveals that there is a relation, if not causal, between mental health problem and frequency of discipline while in prison. Under basis of these findings, this study concludes that a number of inmates in our prison have mental health problems requiring mental health treatment services and suggests five key steps to effectively respond to the prevalence of mental health problems in prison at both the level of the clinical interventions and at the level of system structure and organization. Specially, the importance of collaborative service strategies of the correctional system with mental health systems are underlined.

  • Safety and health education in technical high schools is especially important because the great majority of the students engage in the industrial field after graduation. But there are few reports on the state. of safety and health education in technical high schools in Korea. The aims of this study were to identify the problems of the present safety and health education in technical high schools in Korea and to propose the ways of improving health and safety education. To conduct this study, the textbooks for health and safety related courses, i.e., Introduction to Industry, Gyoryun(dril), and Physical Education, were reviewed. A questionnaire was mailed to the teachers of Introduction to Industry, Gyoryun, Physical Education, and school nurses in 188 technical high schools and the teachers of Gyoryun, Physical Education, and school nurses in 376 general high schools in November 1997. The final response rates were 42.0% for teachers of Introduction to Industry, 62.9% for teachers of Gyoryun, 47.9% for teachers of Physical Education, and 33.0% for school nurses. Also, a survey by self-administered questionnaire on the knowledge, attitude, and practice about safety and health was conducted from May through July 1998 among 44 employees graduated from technical high schools and 44 employees graduated from general high schools since 1995. The analysis of the textbooks showed that the contents of the ‘Industrial Safety and Environment’ section in Introduction to Industry were rather for safety managers than industrial workers and the contents about occupational hygiene and health were scanty. The majority of ‘Accident and Disaster’ and ‘Hazardous Substances’ section in Gyoryun overlapped with those in Introduction to Industry and several mistakes about health related descriptions were found. Some contents of Physical Education. ‘Mental Health’. ‘Emergency Care’. ‘Communicable Disease’, ‘Noncommunicable Disease’, and ‘Food Hygiene’ overlapped with those of Gyoryun. The teachers lectured safety and health related sections of textbook completely in 84.8% for Introduction to Industry, 62.1% for Gyoryun, 20.8% for Physical Education and the most frequent reason for the incomplete education was shortage of time.

  • Objective : This study was a covariance structural analysis to identify korean medicine health promotion behavior by the general characteristics of the subjects and build a predictive model and theoretical framework based on Pender's health promotion model(1996) and related literature reviews. Method : A hypothetical model was consisted of 8 theoretical variables and 27 measured variables. Related variables included Individual Characteristics and Experience, Behavior-specific cognitions and affect and Behavioral outcome. The data was collected from 802 middle and old-aged people living in Seoul and Gyeong gi province through structured questionnaires by face to face interviews between February and March, 2014. SAS ver. 9.1 and AMOS 18.0 programs were used for the data analysis. Results : Difference in the verification of Korean medicine health promotion behavior by the general characteristics, Older people who are male, with higher economic status, no chronic disease or with diabetes, no smoking, no drinking, with more exercise showed significantly higher scores, but education level has no difference. 15 paths were statistically significant among 16 paths on the direct effect, 6 paths were statistically significant among 9 paths on the indirect effect in the hypothetical model. The greatest impact variable on Korean medicine health promotion behavior was perceived self-esteem. Also, the findings showed that the higher perceived social support, perceived health status, previous Korean medicine health promotion behavior, community environment, perceived benefit and the lower perceived barrier had a significant effect on Korean medicine health promotion behavior. Conclusion : This research model has an empirical validity as the variables of this study verified their effects and significances. Therefore, the understanding of Korean medicine health promotion behavior can be increased and the utilization will be higher when seeking a comprehensive health promotion plan. Also, a strategy can be utilized the strategy for Korean medicine health promotion behavior.
