  • Background: This study aimed to assess the toxicity of capsaicin (CP) pharmacopunture in an animal model. Methods: The toxicity of a single-muscular dose of CP (45.45 mg/mL) was evaluated in 6-week-old male and female Sprague-Dawley rats. A total of 20 rats were assigned to 2 groups which were sex and weight matched. All rats acclimatized for 1 week before receiving 1.0 mL of CP (45.45 mg/mL) or normal saline solution (control) intramuscularly. The general condition and mortality of the animals were observed. The rats were sacrificed 2 weeks after CP was administered and histopathology was performed. Results: No abnormal symptoms or deaths were observed, and there was no difference in body weights between the CP and control groups throughout the study. No significant differences in histopathology were observed between the groups. Conclusion: No toxicological changes related to the administration of CP were observed. This study indicated that the safe dose of CP in Sprague-Dawley rats was 1.0 mL of CP (45.45 mg/mL) or less. Further studies are needed to confirm the safety of CP in the human body.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to analyze research trends on the cost-effectiveness in acupuncture for patients with allergic rhinitis. Methods : The literature and research in allergic rhinitis was searched in electronic databases, such as National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database(NHS EED) and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews(CDSR). The general characteristics and the results of each economic analysis such as incremental cost-effectiveness ratios(ICERs) were extracted. Results : In total, thirty seven studies were searched, and two studies were analyzed. They were cost-utility analysis(CUA)s that measured quality-adjusted life years(QALYs). One study showed that the ICER was €22,798 per QALY and was robust in sensitivity analysis. Another showed that the ICER was between €31,241 and €118,889 from society's perspective and between €20,807 and €74,585 from a third-party payer's perspective. Conclusions : Any generalization of these results needs to be made with caution given the specific effects of acupuncture and the difference of cost data in the various countries. Further studies are needed on this topic in order to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness clearly.

Furthermore, the purpose of this study is to examine which books were based on the origin of the medical knowledge enjoyed by Ryu, Seongryong at the time. Methods : The bibliography of each transmitted version of Chimgyeongyogyeol is considered, then the items are compared, and finally, the citations of the relevant contents are examined. Cited literature was analyzed by item, and sources were identified where the contents were cited. Results : 1. Chimgyeongyogyeol was published three times. 2. At present, it is not known which tradition text is the oldest. The transmission relationship between several transmission versions is not clear. 3. Chimgyeongyogyeol was written with reference to various other medical books, centered on Uihagibmun. 4. There is no information about 'Choose a day to perform acupuncture' and 'Zaoyuju acupuncture', which were widely popular in Joseon at the time. This reflects the purpose of writing to convey medical knowledge to the general public. Conclusions : Chimgyeongyogyeol was an acupuncture book written for the purpose of conveying medical knowledge to the common people by reflecting the latest medical achievements in China. Through this, the knowledge of acupuncture enjoyed by the author and what he aimed for through it were confirmed. However, it was impossible to completely compose the system of the first draft only with the extant version.

  • Objective : Because the cause and etiology of chronic headache is not yet fully explained, the treatment of this symptom is not simple. This study compares the effects of aroma acupuncture and normal acupuncture applied on chronic headache patients, in order to establish a primary data for further studies of new treatments and developments of new practical acupunctures. Methods : 38 clinical experiment participants were gathered and through a questionnaire patients who experienced headache for more than 4 hours a day and more than 15 days per month were qualified as Chronic Headache patients. The qualified patients were classified in to two groups, aroma acupuncture group(Aroma AT group, n=23) and normal acupuncture group(AT group, n=15). Treatment was applied 2 times a weeks for 8 weeks. The acupoints, GV20, HN23, ST8, HN46, TE17, GB20, LI20, LI11, LI14, ST36, and LR3 were stimulated for 20 minutes in both the groups. The effects of both groups were analyzed using VAS scores and BPI (Brief Pain Inventory). Results : The VAS pain scores improved significantly in both groups. The decrease rate was larger in the Aroma AT group(p<0.05). The BPI scores for the both groups also decreased. The improvement in the Aroma AT group was larger(p<0.05). Conclusion : Aroma acupuncture applied on chronic headache patients showed effects of relieving pain, improving general activities, changing the mood, and improving sleeping behaviors. These effects were analyzed using VAS scores and BPI. The Aroma AT group showed significant changes of VAS and BPI compared to the AT group, suggesting that this new practical acupuncture is very effective when treating chronic headaches. Further researches are needed to evaluate the distinct functional mechanism of aroma acupuncture, but this study is meaningful in the sense that it will act as a fundamental study to build on.

  • Objective : This study was designed to find out the effect of scolopendrid aquacupuncture classified by the type of HIVD(Herniation of Inter-Vertebral Disc) in lumbar spine. Methods : The 50 patients who had a diagnosis of HIVD by lumbar-CT or lumbar-MRI and admitted to Gwangju oriental medical hospital in wonkwang university from June 2003 to March 2004 were observed. The symptom of inpatients is low back pain with or without sciatica. We treated 50 patients by scolopendrid aquacupuncture besides the general consevative treatment of oriental medicine. Results and Conclusion : The scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment led to improvement in the pain and symptom of HIVD as determined by all efficacy measures. After scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment, there was improvement in VAS, oswestry disability index, ROM and SLRT. The improvement index of scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment classified by the type of HIVD showed that the effects of scolopendrid aquacupuncture had correlation with the type of HIVD. The more the herniation of intervertebral disc decreased, the more the effect of scolopendrid aquacupuncture increased. This results suggest that scolopendrid aquacupuncture is good method for treatment of HIVD but we have to consider the clinical correlation with the degree of herniation.
